Warner Bros. started releasing episodes of the award-winning “Batman: The Curious Series” (BTAS to fans) on DVD in miserly single-disc editions containing four or five episodes apiece. Fan complaints and popular sense have finally made Warner Bros. realize the potential of this acclaimed and hugely favorite series and have released the first volume of episodes in a deluxe package: 4 discs, 28 episodes. The shows are presented in production order, with a few variations to set aside the multi-part episodes together. The sound is an improved Dolby Surround 2.0, and the report is delicate. There are some extras — not a vast amount — but the steady feature here is the shows themselves. There has rarely been an curious display that has achieved this level of quality writing and artwork. Heck, rarely do LIVE action shows effect this sort of quality!

BTAS was released as children’s programming originally, but the animators, directors, and writers turned it into something of adult complexity (not that kids don’t care for it too, but adults tend to be the biggest fans, mostly humorous book lovers) . Freed of the constraints of selling toys, the filmmakers created an intricate prove that was lawful to the dim, psychological side of Batman and his adversaries. Instead of sticking to monotonous formulas usually associated with entertaining TV shows, the writers made definite each episode was something modern, and kept drama always at the forefront. The animation is spectacular and fluid, the action scenes have a kick to them noble to many movies, and the orchestral scores contribute to the feeling of something special.

Not all the episodes are sizable, of course, and some of the early ones in this package expose the creative team struggling to view the direction and tone of the present. But most episodes are satisfactory to pleasant in quality. The writing team did a spectacular job at fleshing out minor baddies like Mr. Freeze, The Clock King, and The Furious Hatter into the full-fledged stout villains with complex motivations. The articulate work by familiar TV and movie actors also raises the quality of the characterizations. For many people, Kevin Conroy IS Batman…his gloomy, edgy whisper is forever rooted to the character.

Here is a breakdown of the episodes and features on the four discs:

DISC 1: Contains episodes “On Leather Wings,” “Christmas with the Joker,” “Nothing to Awe,” “The Last Laugh,” “Handsome Poison,” “The Underdwellers,” and “P.O.V.” The first episode is the best on this disc, with Batman facing the fearsome Man-Bat. The explain really hit the ground running, but the immediate follow-ups are a bit stale. “P.O.V.” has moments of interest because of its original structure, and “Nothing to Panic” has a substantial finale, but the two Joker episodes are particularly poor; the demonstrate hadn’t quite figured out its style yet. Also on this disc is commentary by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski for “On Leather Wings,” and a two-minute demo they did to sell the gape of the series.

DISC 2: Contains episodes “The Forgotten,” “Be a Clown,” “Two Face (Parts 1&2),” “It’s Never Too Slow,” “I’ve Got Batman in My Basement,” and “Heart of Ice.” The last is one of the most celebrated episode of the series, introducing the astonishing re-imagining of Mr. Freeze as a tragic figure. “Two-Face” is also a splendid villain origin anecdote. The other episodes are minor, with a dreadful Joker and Penguin episode, but “It’s Never Too Tedious” is an spirited non-super-villain anecdote. The bonus feature on this disc is a spacious 18-minute documentary about the series, with interviews with the producers, writers, and some of the actors. There’s also audio commentary on “Heart of Ice” with Timm, Radomski, and writer Paul Dini.

DISC 3: Contains episodes “The Cat and the Claw (Parts 1&2),” “Peruse No Disagreeable,” “Beware of the Gray Ghost,” “Prophecy of Doom,” and “Feat of Clay (Parts 1&2) .” The indicate was clearly taking off at this point; only “Prophecy of Doom” is a dreadful episode. “Beware the Gray Ghost” brings benefit Adam West to the Batman series, and is one of the most inspirational of all the episodes. “Feat of Clay” contains delicate animation, and “Cat and Claw” gives us the astonishing relationship between Batman and Catwoman. The bonus feature is a Batcave tour, basically a few screens of text and some connected montages of images from the reveal.

DISC 4: Contains episodes “The Joker’s Favor,” “Vendetta,” “Anxiety of Victory,” “The Clock King,” “Appointment in Crime Alley,” “Angry as a Hatter,” and “Dreams in Darkness.” Two lesser villains, Clock King and Exasperated Hatter, become the focus of mountainous episodes. “The Joker’s Favor” is one of the best Joker episodes, and introduces Harley Quinn, who would become one of the show’s most current creations. The two Scarecrow episodes aren’t noteworthy, however. The bonus feature is a drag for some of the other DC heroes.

One warning: If you acquire this package, be prepared to glimpse your free time catch drained away! It’s impossible to halt watching episodes once you originate, and most of them reward multiple viewings. Recommended as a MUST for all animation and super-hero fans.

These are presented in ‘logical’ order, which resembles production order with some tweaks. For instance, Two-face section 1 and Two-face section 2 were not effect into production encourage to abet, but obviously it wouldn’t invent any sense to set them on separate DVDs.

Star Ocean EX is a 26-episode TV series based on the Sony Playstation game Star Ocean: 2nd Story. Now Star Ocean: 2nd Story happens to be one of my all time favorite RPGs, and so I was full of anticipation for this particular anime release.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Ocean EX - The Inception! Click Here

Star Ocean EX chronicles Claude and Rena’s journey to save the planet. Like most RPGs, these two travel to different towns and dungeons, recruit party members, gain information, and level up in terms of skills and abilities. Eventually, Claude and Rena form one big party to troop to the final boss’ lair and attack. Having played the game prior to watching the anime is a double-edged sword. On one hand, I was very happy to see familiar characters and places — so happy that I got the uncontrollable urge to pick up the game once more and play all the way through it for the fifth time. But on the other hand, this series is so closely based on the game that the story is basically the same. That about killed any sense of suspense or thrill for me because I already knew who Claude and Rena were going to meet, what was going to happen, and so forth.

The art and animation are nicely done. Character designs are beautiful and quite faithful to those you’d find in the game. Alas, Star Ocean EX’s ending leaves something else to be desired. It’s a big cliffhanger — Claude realizes his self-worth, and everybody discovers that they still need to defeat some more baddies. The end. What the hell is up with that? I don’t know if this is one way of telling me there’s going to be a sequel but I was mighty pissed after sitting through all 26

eps and then being given THAT. On a more positive note, I really enjoyed how the characters were portrayed because their individual personalities really shone through in spite of everything. It was fun watching them relate to each other and handle various situations in their own ways.

Star Ocean EX is altogether an above average anime, but to be honest it’s really better off as a game. Those who’ve played Star Ocean: 2nd Story can’t help but know what’s going to happen next, while those who’ve never played may find the whole drill of going to towns, recruiting people, etc. a tad tedious. If you like playing through RPGs (like I do) I suggest you play the game instead… I’d only recommend this anime if you like RPGs but don’t want to play them.

First off I only watched the bootleg copies they sell all over EBAY. Despite the quality being very poor, I still enjoyed the whole series. To bad they waited this long to release this series in America, because it relates to the Star Ocean game released for Playstation about 5 years ago. Anybody that enjoyed the game should love the series too, since it follows the game almost exactly, with a little added humor of course. The only downside is that the ending is a cliffhanger. It’ll leave you wondering what happened, and the only way to answer will be to play the game to find out. Otherwise, I think everybody who watches it will like it unless they screw up with the english cast, but then there’s always the japanese. I think this show will remind gamers how much they liked the game and any of them that watch it will spend the next week playing it again, if they can find a copy. This is definately a show to at least rent. You won’t be disappointed.

P.S. Anybody that finds the game should buy it too. It was the 2nd best RPG (next to Final Fantasy 7) released on PlayStation with like 86 (no joke) endings and maybe 60 hrs gameplay.

If anyone ever says to you, “ah, just drop a nuke on them.” Or, if any policy maker ever says, “What we need are tactical nuclear weapons”, then they haven’t seen nor understand the real horrors not of being killed, but surviving an atomic blast. Instantaneous disintegration is the easy part of this discussion. This is a movie from the survivors point of view that should be shown to all Americans, especially anyone who thinks nuclear war is a game to be won. The effects of these bombs in August, 1945 are still with the survivors today. I never stopped to think what life must be like with your skin burned off, or the side of your face sheered away, or skin dangling like string from your body. You may not be able to watch this documentary all the way through as you see U. S. Army footage of the actual horrors of these blasts, but when you return to the TV after having cried, you will leave with a deep understanding that nuclear weapons are one of the scientific advances the human race should never use again.

I’ve cried every time I have seen this. The atomic bombing of Japan becomes personalized when the very few survivors tell their stories. This documentary truly shows you the destructive capability many countries have now amassed, and why we should never use it.

This film is truly unique in the film-making world, it is the only film that i have ever seen or dealt with that advances the plot and tells important parts of the story in TWO languages. I have a copy of this film that is from Germany with no subtitles. Since i speak both german and russian and am familiar with this point in history, i am very impressed with the realistic portrayal of the last days of WW2. Young Gregor Hecker, who is technically a german, but has grown up a russian and deals with trying to find out what it actually means to be “german”, but the situations he faces and his experiences really can translate to just about anyone trying to find out what it means to be “american” or “russian” or “french” or anyone’s nationality. He learns some very interesting lessons about himself and also about dealing with other individual people, and that one should never have any pre-concieved notions about groups of people. The most fascinating thing about this movie, is that it is a telling story of individuality and humanity, while the larger story of war is all around. I recommend this film to anyone (since it has subtitles) interested in WW2, because it will give a very accurate and interesting perspective of this time period.

I have watched this film on DVD several times and plan to watch it again.

This would be a good film for anyone who is studying Russian or German.

There is a very complex interplay between Hecker, who is a German-Russian, Wadim who is a Russian Jew, and Sascha, who is Russian. Hecker is only nineteen and does not know much about the world. He was raised in Germany until he was 8 then his family moved to Moscow. So, his formative years were spend in Russia and he identifies himself as a Soviet. This leads to some interesting scenes in which he interacts with Germans who, in some cases, even know his family members. They are in turn fascinated by a “German” in a Soviet uniform who is appearing as a their conqueror.

Buy,Download, Or Stream I Was Nineteen! Click Here

His comrade Wadim is a Russian Jew who is also a German language teacher in his civilian profession. Wadim loves the German language, but must reconcile the defeat of Germany, the atrocities of the camps, and his friend Hecker’s disinterest in German culture. At one point there is strife between Wadim and Hecker over this.

Sascha is a kommisar and takes care of young Hecker. He is like an older brother to Hecker. His character is uncomplicated by the internal conflicts of the others. Along with Dsingis, they provide a solid foundation for the conflicted Hecker and Wadim.

One of the most powerful scenes in the movie is at then end when Hecker and his captured German prisoners come under fire from a passing German convoy. A German prisoner, Willi Lommer, who had been disarmed, picks up a rifle to help Hecker defend their position. It’s a pure “us against them” moment in which countries, uniforms, backgrounds, don’t matter, only survival.

A complex and interesting movie worth not only watching, but studying.

A feel good story for the whole family, don’t expect “Mighty Joe Young” to knock you off your feet. Instead, watch it for the good “Beauty and the Beast” storyline that is well outlined for any age group to watch.
There is some violence in this movie, and smaller children may be frightened by “Joe” at first, but if they can control themselves through the first few minutes, they’ll fall in love with him. There is very little, if any, foul language.
The story is simple: Girl and giant ape are moved to the city, girl and giant ape want out, man in love with girl helps, everyone ends up happy.
If you’re interested, “Joe” looks fairly realistic, especially for the time this flick was made.
Overall, a good family show that all can watch. I highly recommend it for its entertainment value.

Jill Young’s mother is killed by a poacher while trying to protect a baby Gorilla named Joe who is rather big for his age. Jill grows up with the giant Gorilla and takes care of him in honor of her mother. Unfortunately poachers are always on the lookout for the giant gorilla, and so Jill and Joe have to relocate to a mini-preserve in California. Unfortunately the poacher that killed Jill’s mother is out for revenge since Joe bit off his finger during the original encounter, and now it seems nowhere is safe for Joe.

What a beautiful movie! Charlize Theron brings real heart to her character and it is her love for Joe as part of her family that makes this a movie to believe in. Bill Paxton does a fine job as the male lead, and they are well supported by great characters and actors (Regina King among them). Also watch out for Naveen Andrews who currently appears in the television series “Lost”. The movie is extremely well directed by Ron Underwood, and the beautiful score by James Horner adds the movie’s soul to Charlize Theron’s heart.

The picture quality on the DVD is good, thanks in part to the amazing cinematography, and the film is in a nicely balanced Dolby Digital 5.1. This movie is a rare gem. So yes it is a remake to the original Mighty Joe Young, and yes we have a new King Kong movie coming up, thus making this a bit of a middle child. Still, once you’ve seen it, you’ll see how wonderful it is. Who needs King Kong? Who needs the original Mighty Joe Young? Hell, who needs Planet Of The Apes? This movie has real heart and soul, once more I credit Charlize Theron and James Horner for that. It won me over. I hope it does you too.

Say what you want about producer/director William Castle (The Tingler, 13 Ghosts, Mr. Sardonicus) but one thing was for sure…he knew how to fill seats in a movie theater, primarily by forcing some sort of direct interaction between the audience and the film (at least in his horror themed features). In House on Haunted Hill (1959), he utilized a technique he called `Emergo’, which essentially featured a skeleton, suspended from wires, coming from the screen towards the audience during a specific part of the movie, the intent being to scare the pants off those in the theater. From what I’ve heard, it didn’t sound like many were frightened, but it didn’t really matter as Castle was a master at selling the sizzle, rather than the steak, as they say, and audiences flocked to his films…produced and directed by William Castle, the film features the merchant of menace himself Vincent Price (The Fly, The Tingler, House of Usher) in the first of two films he made with Castle. Also appearing is Elisha Cook Jr. (Shane, The Haunted Palace), Carolyn Craig (Giant), Richard Long (Ma and Pa Kettle), Carol `homina homina’ Ohmart (Spider Baby), Alan Marshal (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), and Julie Mitchum (Edge of Hell), sister of actor Robert Mitchum.

Price plays Frederick Loren, an eccentric millionaire who, along with his wife Annabelle (Ohmart), has thrown together an interesting little party involving five, seemingly random strangers gathering at a haunted house with ten thousand dollars to each who dare stay through the night. In attendance, along with Frederick and his wife, is Watson Pritchard (Cook), whose brother, one of the previous owners, was murdered within the house, Lance Schroeder (Long), a test pilot, Dr. David Trent (Marshal), a psychiatrist, Nora Manning (Craig), a typist, and Ruth Bridgers (Mitchum), a newspaper columnist. Seems all have agreed to play Frederick’s little game for one reason, they need the dough, and if some crazy rich dude is willing to part with his green for such a seemingly easy task, what the hay, right? Well, the guests arrive, introductions are made, and Frederick gives them the full lowdown. The secluded house is like a fortress (steel doors and bars on the windows) in that once they’re locked in (at midnight, to be precise), there’s no getting out until the caretakers arrive the next morning. Also, there’s no electricity or telephones, and the nearest neighbors are well beyond yelling distance. After a tour of the house, highlighting where various grisly events occurred (including a visit to the acid vat in the cellar…man, this place has everything), a few drinks, and some scares (the ghosts seem to have a thing for Nora), Fredrick passes out some party favors in the form of loaded handguns (nothing like being drunk and armed), not that they’d do anyone much good if there are ghosts out and about…anyway, midnight is coming so if anyone wants to cut out of this ghoulish get together, they’d better get while the getting’s good…

While not my favorite Castle feature (that goes to The Tingler), House on Haunted Hill is still a hoot and a half for all of its campy, good-natured fun. The one thing this film has going for it, above and beyond everything else, is Vincent Price. No matter how rotten the feature was (which wasn’t the case here), Price always brought with him a real sense of class and sophistication to the proceedings, especially true of the number of Poe based films he and Roger Corman made throughout the 1960s for American International Pictures. The absolute best parts of this movie for me occur early on as Price’s character is interacting with his wife, and we see the pair have an interesting hate/hate relationship…here’s an example of their often snide and insinuating banter they engage in behind closed doors…

Buy,Download, Or Stream House on Haunted Hill! Click Here

Fredrick: Of all my wives you’re least agreeable…

Annabelle: But still alive.

Here’s another bit…

Frederick: Do you remember the fun we had when you poisoned me?

Annabelle: Something you ate, the doctor said.

Frederick: Yes, arsenic on the rocks…

There are a few more excellent exchanges between Price and Ohmart, worthy alone of seeing this film. As for the rest of the performers, I had no real complaints. Elisha Cook Jr.’s character did get on my nerves after awhile, with his constant dour outlook punctuated by his persistent `doom and gloom’ predictions. Drink some more booze, you rummy…seriously, all this guy did was talk about how the ghosts were going to come and take them all away. Perhaps this attitude was assisted by his excessive alcohol intake, but really, what’s the point of accepting an invitation to spend a night at a house you believe you won’t come out of alive? The money? Won’t do you much good if’n you’re dead, fool. If I was in that house I probably would have shot him just to be rid of him. At least I learned one thing…never invite Elisha Cook Jr. to your party and ply him with lots of booze as he’ll turn into a real poison pill. I did like Ms. Ohmart, and not just because she was a smoking babe with a large rack, but because she held her own with Price, even if it was for just a handful of scenes. If you’ve got a hankering to see more of her, and you like ookie horror features, you should really check out another film she appeared in called Spider Baby (1968), featuring Lon Chaney Jr. There are a few, minor scares scattered throughout the film (a crusty crone, a disembodied head or two), but nothing that will make you soil yourself…some scenes will make you snicker, though, like the one where Pritchard chucks a dead rat into the acid vat, if only to demonstrate the acid is really acid. After some bubbling effects, a fully articulated rat skeleton bobs to the surface, indicating to those watching it truly is the real deal. Yes sir, that be some powerful acid…the movie may not be much for scares, but it does have plenty of atmosphere created by Castle’s direction, groovy, cobweb laden set pieces, spooky music, and usage of the Ennis Brown House in Los Angeles, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, for the exterior shots.

It seems this film has fallen into the public domain (i.e. the copyright expired), as I see there are a number of DVD releases by various companies. I can’t speak for those other releases, but the one I own, put out by Warner Brothers (it has a large headshot of Price in the lower right hand corner and Ohmart in a nightgown being menaced by a disfigured hand in the upper left), looks exceptionally good, and features both the fullscreen and widescreen formats, along with a excellent Dolby Digital mono audio track. The only extras included are a theatrical trailer for the film and subtitles in both English and French.

Cookieman108

By the way, this movie saw a remake of the same titled, released in 1999, oozing with high tech special effects. It was decent enough, but I still liked the original better.

William Castle at his gimmicky best! A Classic, spooky Black and White, with deliciously devilish Vincent Price as millionaire with a bored gold-digger wife. She wants a Halloween party with her friends, Price tosses a party all right, but not with the people of her choosing. He offers $10,000 dollars to five stranger if they will join him and his wife in spending Halloween night in a truly haunted house. One of the 5 is a young Elisha Cooke, family of the former owners who died in the house, and he leads them on a murder tour. To jazz things up, Price passes out “party favors” - guns. And it’s a race to find out whether Price of his wife will be the last one standing. This movie is a grandfather of nearly every clichés, blooding dripping from the ceiling, dark mysterious corridors, a witchy woman floating around and vanishing - and the topper that organ music!! This is more like a Halloween Fun house ride than a movie! Price is campy and has great fun with the role, with super lines, especially when fussing with his less than happy wife.

Castle originally devised this movie with “special touches” for the audiences, like ghost on wires gloating through the audience of people in costume sitting down beside you to enhance the fun house feel.

Just plain fun and a wee trip down memory lane.

When SNL (at this time it was NBC’s Saturday Night Live) first came on it changed the variety format from skits and musical numbers to what is now called sketch comedy with music from popular and upcoming rock groups. Each episode was “hosted” by an actor who was usually promoting their new film.

Each show had an opening skit that end with “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night”, the credits followed, then the guest host would come out do some sort of monologue. This would fade into either an original SNL cast commercial (remember The Taste Bud’s for Budweiser) or a parody of a commercial. Skit, musical guest, skit, Weekend Update, skit, second musical number, skit and closing.

The show had a number of reoccuring skits, which were rotated to keep them fresh (unlike today when they get an idea they flog it to death!). The best were Two Wild and Crazy Guys (Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd), the coneheads (Aykroyd, Jane Curtin and Lorraine Newman), Samuari “Whatever” (John Belushi), the Killer Bees (cast).

If you have not seen the original episodes uncut then you will understand why this show was so revolutionary. And remember that at this time people had to stay up to watch the show “Live” as most people did not own VCR’s in 1977. So it became a fashionable for groups of young people to have parties and watch the show.

The following are this season’s hosts and musical guests:

Steve Martin / Jackson Browne (Running on Empty and The Pretender)

Madeline Kahn / Taj Mahal (Queen Bee) - guest performer Dame Edna Everedge

Hugh Heffner / Libby Titus (Fool That I Am)

Charles Grodin / Paul Simon and The Persuaders (Slip Sliding Away and You’re Kind) - Coneheads, Samuai Dry Cleaner, Killer Bees. Art Garfunkel appears in a skit with Grodin and Simon

Ray Charles and the Raylettes (I Can See Clearly Now, What I’d Say and Hit The Road Jack)- Ray does a parody of Andre Agassi’s Cannon commercial.

Buck Henry / Leon Redbone (Champagne Charlie and Please Don’t Talk About Me When I Am Gone) - Samurai Psychiatrist

Mary Kay Place / Willie Nelson (Whiskey River, Blue Eye’s Crying in the Rain and Something to Brag About) - with appearance by Andy Kaufman

Mrs. Miskel Spillman (Anyone Can Host winner) / Elvis Costello (Watching the Detectives)

Steve Martin / The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (On the Looose with the Blues) & Randy Newman (Short People and Rider on the Rain) - Two Wild and Crazy Guys, Coneheads

Robert Klien / Bonnie Raitt (Runaway and Give It All Up or Let Me Go) - Lobsters Attack the Show

This is when the show was at its zenith and is still funny today.

Many reviewers say these early Saturday Night Live seasons are products of their times, that they aren’t nearly as funny today as we all thought they were back then. To that I say dude, what have you been smokin’? Yes, I was one of those who watched these shows in college, usually at a party where everyone was, shall we say, already in a purple haze. But thinking that’s what made these shows great is simply revisionist history.

Sure there are some dated cultural jokes, a few lame musical guests and an occasional skit that falls flat. However, each episode is still, for the most part, solidly entertaining. As I sat down with these discs today partaking of nothing stronger than a few Diet Cokes, what I noticed is just how watchable these shows still are. Even when not at their best, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin and the others each did at least interesting work, and always in their own personal style. What resulted was a true comedy variety show, a witty take on middlebrow culture that though edgy at times, rarely takes a cheap shot or wallows in the gutter.

Originally 90 minutes long with commercial breaks, each commercial-free episode here runs between 66 and 68 minutes.

This third season may be the best in Saturday Night’s history. Most every show includes at least one of SNL’s most famous recurring skits as well as some hilarious forgotten moments. For example, the first show includes Lorne Michaels upping his offer to the Beatles from $3,000 to $3,200 and a commercial parody for the Kromega III, “a watch so complex it takes two people to make it work.” The second episode tosses in an ad for Swill (”the water that’s dredged from Lake Erie”), a great skit with Gilda and host Madeline Kahn as two drunken single girls who discuss everything from dates who endlessly drone on about “The Patty Duke Show” to how to lie on a bed “so the fat on your thighs isn’t spread out,” and an ad-libbed chat between Kahn and Dame Edna (English comedian Barry Humphries in drag) that suddenly catches Kahn so off-guard you can see the actress blush. After Dame Edna hints of “her” own lesbian tendencies, she offers Kahn some phallic-shaped “pineapple and sausage surprise,” saying “you look like a girl who could use something hot inside you.”

By the way, the Richard Dreyfuss episode does NOT have Belushi’s ad-libbed finale about Dreyfuss being Jewish.

BONUS FEATURES

Disc 7 has two interesting bonus features. “Things We Did Last Summer” is a 50-minute mockumentary that once aired in place of the regular show. The camera follows Radner as she charges tourists for a guided tour of her apartment and Murray as he plays minor-league baseball. Morris looks for work as a human lawn jockey, Newman takes a strange vacation to Tahiti and Belushi and Aykroyd perform “Hey Bartender” and “Rubber Biscuit” as Jake and Elwood Blues at the Universal Amphitheater. Also on the disc: an actual two-minute wardrobe test for Belushi and band director Howard Shore.

‘LIMITED EDITION’ EXTRAS

Like the initial pressings of the earlier SNL seasons, this Limited Edition third season set comes in a book-style box (dark blue). The inner lid reproduces a hand-painted photo of the cast. Inside sits a black folding slipcase with the seven DVDs. Also in the box are four postcard-sized duo-tone prints. Suitable for framing, they feature photos of the Nerds, Blues Brothers, Gilda, and finally Steve Martin performing “King Tut.”

Okay…this is an improvement over the previous box set…as the films feature a greatly improved picture and sound options..BUT..the foreign sets available though amazon.co.uk have great packaging…very cool book and documentaries NOT included in this set…heck there are NONE on this set. I also note that while the menus look identical to the foreign set (I guess you can tell I own both?)…to watch it with the original language and English subtitles…on the foreign set they are below the picture on these…ON THE PICTURE? ..why? when you have a widescreen do you need to put the subtitles on the images? They didn’t on my import…

this is a pretty half a…ed effort on 20th Century Fox. and I agree the last movie in particular is a joke and insult to Mr Lee. It doesn’t need inclusion.

I notice some folks take issue with “Imports” ..there is a difference between official licensed DVDs and “bootlegs” the items I am discussing are the DVDs available through Amazon.co.uk and are legit and its NOT just that there are extra DVDs for every movie but the picture is alarmingly BETTER (think BLURAY to VHS better) …the US set is worth the 10bucks you pay for it but if you are a real fan of Mr Lee and this series of movies you can own versions which run circles around what we are offered in the USA. This is not the only series of films which find better and more restored or better quality outside of the US…and this isn’t opinion but fact.

What can I say. I bought imports before and got burnt.

Suffice it to say, this is possibly the next best thing to own. Here, you get to actually watch the movies in the original languages, with the exception of Game of Death and Game of Death II, but they were always done in English and is not a big loss.

Having the original Chinese language is great on many fronts. First off, the dubbing that was done before in English was horrendous as it always has been. Plus, some things are changed from the story line when they translate it as they try to match the lip movements to the English words.

Also, because of the translation, this sometimes causes other scenes to be thrown out. Case in point is in Way of the Dragon/Return of the Dragon. When Bruce’s character is standing outside the restaurant with his stomach growling, a man comes out and tells him to go on inside. In the American version, we see Bruce go in and then come out again, apparently after having eaten. Well, an entire scene was missed in where he goes into the restaurant to order food and can’t speak a word of English, but that’s what the waitress speaks in and what the menu is in. The entire exchange is hilarious. It also drives home the point that Bruce’s character is out of place in Rome which makes more sense with many of the scenes in the movie which seemed strange when spoken in the English language.

Now, it would have been nice to have more “extras” other than the filler stuff they have here, which is basically slide shows, trailers and interviews with people. I understand the import versions have much more, but for me, this coupled with the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD makes my Bruce Lee collection complete.

With the Ultimate Collection, you get a new 5.1 English soundtrack but at times, it sounds funny during the fight scenes. Specifically, it sounds like the fight is taking place in a tunnel with the reverberation turned on a little too much I guess. It can be kind of distracting and disorienting with the way it sounds, but it’s not a total loss. Still, the Chinese soundtrack is better. Different music and it just flows better.

The Chinese soundtracks are fine and make the movies much more enjoyable for me because you get to hear the true emotions of the actors. Some have complained about the subtitles being within the movie rather than in the black bars below. This is because these movies are in anamorphic wide screen, so on a HDTV, you’d have no black bars. To me, it’s not that bad. That’s how it would have been in the theaters to begin with anyways.

The picture for each of the movies are great, with the exception of Way of the Dragon. Early on, parts of it are fuzzy and out of focus. Now, this could be due to the camera shot itself because it’s not the entire shot that’s out of focus, but it’s not enough to be completely horrible or unwatchable. But, after you get past that point in Way of the Dragon, the picture is great just like in all the other movies.

The only unwatchable things are the Game of Death (minus the final fights with the REAL Bruce of course) and Game of Death II and we all know why that is. If you really want to see how the Game of Death fights were, get the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD which contains at least 30 minutes of the fights in the order they would have happened, including his side kicks that were supposed to come along with him but were left out of the GOD movie for obvious reasons. It’s a very interesting introspective on what Bruce was trying to envision with Game of Death and it’s a shame it was never completed the way he wanted it. Plus, all the interviews up to that point are great, with Chuck Norris, Kareem Abdul Jabar and so many other former students and martial artists that knew and worked with Bruce Lee.

To me, this set is worth 4 stars. It could have gotten 5 stars with some extra content and the strange 5.1 sounds hurt that as well, but overall, this is worth having. Couple this with the 2-disc DVD of Enter the Dragon and it’s completely worth 5 stars.

There is no better bargain in the states than this.
