The Gumball 3000 is like a real-life Cannonball Race, but without the guaranteed laughs of a plump Dom DeLuise. Instead, the documentarians–who do their best to catch some drama wherever they can to stretch this to feature length–are oftentimes left with nothing but “Viva La Bam” stars Ryan Dunn and Bam Margera complaining about how long they’ve been driving, how annoying the crowds are, or getting lost. A racing SUV packing skating fable Tony Hawk, skating pro Mike Vallely, and BMX pro Mike Escamilla is the less whiny, down-to-earth team the filmmakers follow. This trio wind up hunting for Dunn and Margera when that head-up-their-butts duo gets lost or breaks down in Bam’s abused purple Lamborghini.

That trio also gives the filmmakers a chance to explain off the X Games-worthy skateboarding and BMX-ing skills that these amateur globe-trotting racers bring–in Europe, in Vegas, in Salt Lake City.
Those who aren’t already into “Viva La Bam,” “Jackass,” and skateboarding can skip this. But those who wind up watching this over-long film will be rewarded with a obedient 1960s-style catch by Roxbury, split-screen camera tricks straight out of a Bond film, and looks at 120 of the most fine cars ever to accelerate through Europe, Thailand, and America.
I had high hopes for this video — after all, how can you possibly go outrageous with a video about an illegal 3000 mile road speed? But then I watched it . . . .

Annoying, depraved richboys continually bragging about driving “3000 miles in 10 days” . . . wow, I once drove 2000 miles in under 48 hours . . . in a exciting truck . . . which I slept in (and I know folks who’ve made far better time . . . on a motorcycle) . Their adore vehicles are flown from continent to continent, and they drive for a few hours before pulling into a 5-star hotel or a palace to be pampered and given a sumptuous feast before sleeping in a private suite. But yet they jabber about how hard they have it, “we were sitting in that car for 4 hours!”
In the special features. we catch to follow the detestable millionaire cityboys as they trash a low-paid transportation worker’s personal vehicle, since they suspect him of being the one who dared to do a donut in Bam’s “Lambo”, then they badmouth their girlfriends, belief a drug pick, and joke about their cross-country beat off contest (in the car and in the hotels) . I was truly disgusted and wanted to kick each of them in the head.
I’m giving it 2 stars because it was spicy to spy the cars and there was one rupture caught on film, but if you’re expecting a “speed” or even a “driving” flick (as I was) you’ll be disappointed . . . probably 75% of the footage is the drivers goofing off during their many rest stops. But fans of “Jackass” will probably like it, as they seem to be the target audience.
