The Simpsons DVD sets so far have been jam-packed with extras, commentaries, and creative menu pages, which may be the reason the seasons are fairly slow in coming out. I am getting a bit antsy because the next 7 seasons or so are so great, but good things come to those who wait. Season five has some of my favorite episodes. Some were pretty rare to see in syndication and now almost impossible to see as the current reruns seem to concentrate on the later seasons. Here are my season five highlights:
“Homer’s Barbershop Quartet” with an appearance by George Harrison. This parody of the Beatles is very clever, especially Barney’s girlfriend, “the Japanese conceptual artist.”
“Rosebud” is in my top 10 Simpsons episodes ever. Mr. Burns is obsessed with finding his boyhood teddy bear Bobo. It is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. The best part is when Smithers dresses like Bobo to try to, uh, cheer up Burns.
“Bart’s Inner Child”: Self-help guru Brad Goodman is impressed by Bart’s “do what you feel like” attitude. Springfield puts together a “Do What You Feel Festival,” a welcome change from the “Do As We Say Festival” (started by German settlers).
“Boy-Scoutz in the Hood”: Another favorite of mine. A sugar high causes Bart to join the junior campers, lead by Ned Flanders. Enduring Homer’s constant teasing, Bart dreads telling Homer about the father-son rafting trip (Homers response: “Ha, you don’t have a son.”). Ernest Borgnine guest stars.
“Homer and Apu”: Apu gets busted for selling tainted meat and loses his job at the Kwik-E-Mart. At one point, Apu and Homer travel to India so Apu can seek forgiveness from the Keik-E-Mart CEO who resides in not the most conveniently located convenience stores. James Woods guest stars.
“Lisa Vs. Malibu Stacy”: Lisa is on a rampage when her talking Malibu Stacy doll says things like “Don’t ask me, I’m just a girl.” She meets with the doll’s creator Stacy Lovell to design a more politically correct doll. Lovell had been forced out of the company because her ideas were not cost effective (oh, and she was also “funneling profits to the Viet Cong”). It is hilarious. Smithers’ start-up page on his computer is a must-see.
“Deep Space Homer”: A classic where Homer goes into space. Buzz Aldrin and James Taylor are guests.
“The Boy Who Knew Too Much”: Bart plays hooky and witnesses an incident that causes a trial against Mayor Quimby’s nephew Freddy. On the jury is Homer “how many s’s are in innocent” Simpson.
“Secrets of a Successful Marriage”: Homer feels important teaching a class on marriage but Marge is not happy with his “tell all” lesson plan.
These are my favorites of this DVD set. Other episodes include: Cape Feare (starring Springfield’s criminal mastermind Sideshow Bob), Homer Goes to College, Treehouse of Horror IV (where Homer sells his soul for a donut), Marge on the Lam (a Thelma and Louise parody), The Last Temptation of Homer, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling, Homer the Vigilante, Bart Gets Famous (Bart as the “I didn’t do it” boy), Homer Loves Flanders, Bart Gets an Elephant, Burn’s Heir, Sweet Seymour Skinner’s Baadasssss Song, and Lady Bouvier’s Lover (with a parody of The Graduate).
Seems like Fox Studio is getting faster at pumping these DVDs out. The fifth season might be where the simpsons jumped the shark pit, but I’ll leave that discussion to the ubernerds. The fifth season includes the following episodes:

Homer’s Barbershop Quartet: While looking through old records, the kids discover their dad was in a barbershop quartet. Guest appearnce by George Harrison.
Cape Feare [sic]: Side show bob is out to kill Bart and the family is put in the witness relocation program. Includes the famous “hello Mr. Thompson” scene.

Homer Goes to College: After a nuclear plant inspection, Homer has to go to college. The episode is a send up of popular college movies of the 80’s (e.g. Revenge of the nerds or animal house). Homer falls in with the nerd crowd.
Rosebud: In a long turn of events, Mr. Burn’s childhood teddy bear ends up in Maggie’s hands. Burns and Homer negotiate for the return of the bear. Special guests: the Ramones.
Treehouse of Horror IV: Homer sells his soul for a donut, Bart spies a gremlin on the side of the school bus (ala twilight zone), and Homer kills the vampire Mr. Burns (ala Braum Stroker’s Dracula).
Marge on the Lam: In a spoof of Thelma and Loise, Marge and her neighbor go on a cross country chase, when her neighbor steals her ex’s car.
Bart’s inner child: A self-help guru uses Bart as an example of freeing one’s inner child. A “do what you feel like” style festival ensues. Guest stars James Brown.
Boy Scoutz in da Hood: After a sugar binge, Bart and Milhouse find themselves enrolled in the boyscouts. Hilarity ensues.
The Last Temptation of Homer: When a beautiful woman starts working at the plant, Homer’s faithfulness is put to the test. Guest starring Michelle Pfeiffer.
$pringfield: Mr. Burns opens a casino in Springfield. Homer works at the casino, while Marge develops a gambling problem.
Homer the Vigilante: A catburglar is loose in Springfield. Homer forms a watch group (read mob) to catch the thief.
Bart Gets Famous: While working on the Krusty the Klown show, Bart inadvertantly steals Krusty’s thunder and has his 15 minutes of fame. Guest starring Conan O’Brien (who used to write for the show).
Homer and Apu: Homer gets sick after eating rotting meat from the Quickie Mart. As penance, Apu moves in to be a servant for the Simpsons. Homer and Apu then try to get Apu’s job back.
Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy: Lisa fights back against corporate America’s barbi-style image by producing a doll designed to give girls a positive image for themselves.
Deep Space Homer: Homer competes for and wins (by default) a spot on the spaceshuttle. His incompetence nearly kills them, and then saves the crew. Stars Buzz Aldrin and James Taylor.
Homer Loves Flanders: Homer sucks up to Flanders when he learns Flanders has football tickets. His relationship grows with Ned (uncomfortably so for Ned), until Homer realizes that Flanders is a jerk.
Bart gets an Elephant: Through a wacky radio contest, Bart wins an elephant. Unable to care for it, he is forced to give it up to a wildlife refuge.
Burn’s Heir: Bart competes for, and wins a spot as the heir to Burn’s fortune. But he renounces the throne when Burns wants him to fire Homer.
Sweet Seymore Skinner’s Baadasssss Song: Bart’s hijinks finally get Seymore fired as the school’s principle. He re-enlists in the army. Bart and Homer try to get him back as principle when Ned Flanders becomes the new school principle.
The Boy Who Knew Too Much: When Bart skips school he witnesses a crime, allegedly committed by the Mayor’s brother. Bart’s testimony can clear him, but Seymore will know Bart cut class. Homer serves on the jury (”I know you can read my thoughts boy…meow meow meow meow…”)
Lady Boivier’s Lover: Marge’s mom falls for Homer’s dad, only to fall for Mr. Burns.
Secrets of a Successful Marriage: Homer teaches class as a marriage counselor, but ends up dishing the dirt on his own marriage. Marge kicks him out, and Homer is forced to look after himself.

B-horror movie god Bruce “Faulty Expressionless” Campbell is the main attraction of this Sci-Fi Pictures novel, in which Campbell and Xena: Warrior Princess’ Renee O’Connor star as opposing humans against devious, grotesque aliens hellbent on, what else, annihilation of all mankind. The special effects are about what you would query from a Sci-Fi Channel modern movie, and were it not for Campbell, this would honest be another forgettable schlock-fest. All in all, Alien Apocalypse is worth checking out for fans of Campbell (and you all know who you are), but if you want to inspect a surprisingly astronomical unusual film with Bruce, check out the recently released Man With the Screaming Brain, in which Campbell stars and directs as well.
What were the makers of this movie thinking when they gave all the surviving humans really abominable wigs and obvioulsy glued on beards. It is very distracting to the fable (if there was one) . Basically Bruce and crew have been in cyro sleep for 40 years in plot, return to earth to derive it has been infested with buggy aliens with a thing for wood. The crew was in state to do something with a probe that is never explained. I am a tremendous Bruce Campbell fan but this movie was not a obedient B movie at all. It was neither droll nor serious and worst of all was not spirited to leer. Xena Warrior Princess’ Renee O’Connor was given second billing on the DVD box but she is really not in the movie very great. She is basically there to play the romantic interest for Bruce, the two have big buddy chemistry (as seen on Xena) but zero romantic chemistry. The movie also suffers from a lack of a surviving human character to root for. Renee and Bruce can kick some butt, but all the other characters are pathetic. If you want to peruse a advantageous Bruce flix stick with the Snide Dull films.

An academy award winner in 1969 in spite of having an X rating, this is one of those classic films that have stale well. British director John Schlessinger, in his first American film, captured the gritty sordidness of Modern York City, as it was in those days, with all its contrasts and inconsistencies. We leer a man sprawled on the sidewalk in front of an upscale jewelry store being ignored by passersby.
Jon Voight is cast as Joe Buck, a young man from Texas who comes to Original York with the dream of becoming a male prostitute. Dustin Hoffman is Rico Ratzo Rizzo, a the crippled street-wise hustler who first cons the young Texan and later befriends him. Together, these two outcasts produce a exclusive bond as they struggle to survive on the streets of Unique York. Joe Bucks’ anecdote is told with flashbacks and surreal fantasy sequences, which seem unfocussed at times, but give us an opinion of who he is. Ratzo, however, doesn’t need this kind of cinematographic background; his quirky character is all factual there.
The film is chubby of memorable characters - Sylvia Miles as an aging Park Avenue woman with a thick Recent York accent who considers herself “one helluva comely chick”, John McGiver, the religious nutjob who Joe Buck thinks will give him connections to rich women, and Brenda Vacarro who takes Joe home with her after a psychedelic party. There’s a memorable soundtrack too — “The Echoes of My Mind”. And then there’s the memorable conclusion which takes site on a bus headed for Florida.

I loved this video but it’s not for everybody. It’s downbeat and shaded and disturbing. But it says something about human nature and human connection. And it pictures a plot of life that might not be obliging but is a reality. Recommended.
1969 was an helpful year for films. There was Anne of the Thousand Days, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,Hello Dolly,Easy Rider, the list goes on and on.Why is it then that this is the film that won the Academy Awards for best report, director and screenplay of that year? (and was also given nods for both leading actors) . Perhaps the voters over 30 years ago could forsee that this movie would stand the test of time.

This is a chronicle that tugged at our heartstrings, and made us up sit up and prefer perceive of the world around us. Joe Buck(John Voight), a naive, righteous looking,Texas “cowboy”, in a derive up that looks as if he is Alan Ladd reincarnated, hits the “Gargantuan Apple” in hopes of striking it rich (literally) with the ladies there.
It isnt long before his hopes are dashed, he is broke, life on the streets of Modern York is savage. He must do things that turn his stomach in order to survive. He finds himself in need of a friend. The friend comes in the get of one “Ratso” Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), a sleazy. panderer, who offers Joe a status with him in a condemned apartment building.
Ratso takes Joe under his coast, and together they try to survive on one accept rich quickly intention after another. These two very different men earn a current bond. Joe has disturbing thoughts of the past, and Ratso has dreams of the future. When Ratso falls ill, though. it is Joe who must care for him. Their friendship moved us then and it will go you now.
The actors are phenominal in their performances. Hoffman recent off his success in “The Graduate” shows us scheme assist then how versitile he is, and Voight the newcomer proved his dramatic skills early on. The director John Schlesinger (Far From the Maddning Crowd) gives us a very realistic opinion of life on the streets. At the time of it’s release this film was rated X (it is R now) and although there are some expicit scenes, the main focus is on the kinship of man.

The DVD(MGM) is a nice transfer. The colors ar vibrant. It is in the unique widescreen format (with a standard format on the b side of the disc) It is in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, not the best I have heard done on a film of this age, but unruffled fine enough. The soundtrack is improbable with the tall song “Everybody’s Talkin”. No other special features on the disc itself but it does near with a booklet on the casting and making of the film, along with some other sharp facts about it.
This would be an obedient addition to any film collection.
Enjoy…….Laurie

The “meat” of this video is as scrumptious as the previous two musical-themed Baby Einstein videos (Baby Bach, and Baby Mozart), but I am disappointed that Disney, who is now the parent company of Baby Einstein, chose to change the format we moms have near to depend on. When you have a crying baby, it’s always huge to objective pop in a Baby Einstein video, because “the point to” usually starts up correct after the caterpillar creeps across the mask. Then it’s usually 28 or so minutes of non-stop fun, followed by the “Hi, I’m Julie Clark…” advertising fraction, and then on to the credits, which exhibit each toy that was dilapidated in the video. This was always broad because a baby would level-headed be watching good up until the very extinguish even though “the demonstrate” was over. Not so with the Baby Beethoven VHS! This video features a chubby five minutes of the newly redone advertising section AT THE Commence OF THE VIDEO! This does not hold a baby’s attention upright away like all the other Baby Einstein videos. Also, since the ads are at the commence of the video, the tape ends rather abruptly, and although the manufacturers of toys old are names, each toy is not shown again. This is a bummer if you want to recall any of the toys and you don’t know what they’re called. Aside from these couple of complaints, the video itself is respectable, but I would really recommend to Disney, for future Baby Einstein videos, that they please assign the ad fraction at the slay instead of up front.
My 6 month broken-down daughter watched Baby Mozart VHS first and sat through the entire video (about 30 minutes)! A couple of days later I played this DVD which is almost double the length, she again watched the whole thing attentatively. Since the dvd is easier to play, we have been playing it at least a couple of time a day and everytime she quietly watches it, rubbing her limited feet in satisfaction. Further, she watches it all by herself on her bouncer seat, or sitting on sofa, giving us plenty of time to ourselves - since she loves us to acquire her these days.
I tried to play others like the ballet Swan Lake, thinking the fair classical music along with ballet would do the same trick. Boy was I snide! I guess that’s why these Baby Einstein titles are no ordinary products, they simply earn baby’s attention easily.
Get these titles, they are well worth the money and they’ll last a long time.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), former Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me cry.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here
I thought it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a shy young boy star-struck by a famous explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become fast friends, and vow to one day travel to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they buy their dream home and fix it up, hoping to fill it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through old age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a happy marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s pain when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.
When developers close in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and travel to Paradise Falls. A former balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of colorful balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a plump, plucky kid trying to earn a scouting badge.

After landing in Paradise Falls, the old man and the little boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a huge rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”). Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of close calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.
In the process, Carl learns to let go of his sad mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by beautiful hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole new world.
Up is a deeply emotional film, full of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Score another triumph for Pixar.
Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to create an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster animated movie. But in the meantime, they’re still putting out delightful animated movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety old man. It’s a charming, fun little adventure story with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet little story about loss and love.
As a child, the shy Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared love of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, move into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.
Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a real estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an enthusiastic, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the ride. Poor kid was just trying to earn an “assisting the elderly” badge.
And the jungle trek to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a big emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious old man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the old guy is very familiar to Carl — and to capture Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.
Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as popular as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty old coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can appreciate Carl’s love for his lost wife, and his slow realization that he’s clinging to the past.
In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they show all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing old together, and finally loss.
But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy come to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of great dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called See Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Cool! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an aged airship.
Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and determined to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is determined to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special notice. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I love you”) and act the way dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.
The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to get shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of exclusive stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.
There are also a pair of adorable animated shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to deliver potentially harmful baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.
“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously animated, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can enjoy. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

We own all the Land Before Time videos, and I was disappointed in this one. Although the tiny dinosaurs are cute (and so is Cera’s dad’s girlfriend), the characters are either mean-spirited, dumb or ineffectual. Littlefoot and Cera are shown to be spiteful, Cera’s dad is a raging, lying bully and Grampa has regressed from being a wise elder to being a weak and ignored character. The plot: Littlefoot feels inadequate for being short so he tries to eat the tree blossoms that Cera’s dad guards fiercely. The tiny dinos come and eat what Littlefoot knocks down, Littlefoot lies to protect himself and Cera’s dad organizes a posse to hunt and kill the little ones. The songs include references to eliminating others, how bad dads are, and other choice themes I’d rather not sing aloud with my 5 year old son. This is by far the worst of the lot.
After watching this movie, my 4 year started singing dads are dumb, dads are dumb- because that’s all she could remember of the song. Sometimes pre-schoolers don’t “get” the entire message of a song or movie. You may have to have a long discussion over the meaning of this movie, so be prepared!
