About ten years ago, I screened THE QUEEN OF SPADES at Current York’s Museum of Fresh Art film library. I had heard that they had, in their collection, an passe 16 mm print of this almost-lost worship. I sat with a Russian stage/film director friend, as well as actress Rosemary Harris (slow of Aunt May in SPIDERMAN) ; the three of us were transfixed as we discovered, and Rosie re-discovered (she had seen the premiere in England), this unbelievable portion of film alchemy.

Anton Walbrook’s talent, like Vivien Leigh’s, was ineffable. His choices, as an actor, are so strange sometimes that you consider he will never pull off the moment - then he stops proper at the edge and leaves you gasping at the drawl uniqueness and difficulty of his choice. Dame Edith Evans, in her film debut, playing a woman forty years her senior, is all considerable, hooked, bitter, stunned restraint. (Rosie mentioned that Edith Evan’s key moment of reaction, in the film, had so timorous the audience at the time that everyone screamed out loud. Not difficult to understand, even today…)

The lighting and camera direction are at once solid and ethereal; dreamy like Cocteau’s LA BELLE ET LA BETE, and brutally unforgiving like Welles’ CITIZEN KANE.

Much has been said about Insensible OF NIGHT and deservedly so. This genuinely is the grandfather of all psychological apprehension films. What seems so innocuous, almost gentle at first, develops into a disturbingly laden freight content barrelling straight towards you. There will be no plot to race. You will be knocked squarely off your tracks. Completely and utterly disorienting. Warning: do not witness this film alone at night. Don’t even glance this film alone on a sunny day.

The recount and sound on each are very ample and rich. The liner notes and artwork accompanying the DVD are of mountainous interest, and are a astounding starting-off point for the viewer.

Would that more DVD-producing companies were like Anchor Bay. Could they be poised to retract over the region that Criterion, up until recently (with misleading claims of restoration and a chronicity of unpleasant quality releases), enjoyed? One can only hope.

Dead of Night is one of the most stylish british films ever made. Five (no less) ample tales of the supernatural. They are all huge. The last one (about the ventriloquist who believes his doll to be alive) is one of the best madness-sequences ever made on film! This sequence is very well-known and deserves to be seen many times. This is a film that will let you wondering about the all those immense unlit and white Honest panic films that we do not survey today in the computer age. If you liked The Haunting (Robert Wise’s new version) and Spirit of the Tedious, this is a film for you: fair psycological/supernatural terror.

Queen of Spades is not as famed as the other film, but it is also a correct gem to be discovered. It tells the account of a russian officer who’s obsessed with discovering the secret of winning at the cards. This obsession will have the most macabre implications. The production designer on this film is a fair winner. So is the screenplay and the cinematography.

Here you have two tremendous films for the brand of one (positively two of the best films ever made by the Ealing Studios) . Who can ask for more? The image on the DVD is pleasing on both films. There are no extras, but don’t let that assign you away: these films are worth it. If you (like me) savor classic chillers, these are for you!

I stummbled upon bkg on vcd in honk kong over four years ago and its been sitting in my collection ever since, unwatched.
Yesterday on a whim i decided to give it a go and i can hounestly say i haven`t been that moved by a film in a very long time.
The film follows the blossoming of an intense [if short lived] friendship bettween three girls in tokyo whilst they franticaly spend twenty four hours trying to come up with 500, 000 yen for a journy to new york.
What makes bkg so intresting and at times disturbing is that it is set in the world of the kogals [Young school girls in japan willing to sell themselves to the less than savoury japanese buisness man for the latest in fashion brand names…]
The film is an incredibaly heart felt exploration of the loss of inosence and the destructive force of sexual corruption in a culture not willing to stop and look at its self, at one point brilliantly bought up in the film by one of the kogals,

`when adults don`t know when to say no they act like children, then it is us, the real children who have the real controle.`

I would recomend this film to anyone who loves cinema, espeacialy if you have any intrest in japan.

As a foreigner living in Japan, and for any foreigner, I think this film serves as a great documentary and social commentary on a very dark and perverse underbelly of Japanese culture that rarely gets exposed in the Western world. I did not know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised by this raw, honest and shocking account of one aspect of modern Japanese culture. This film addresses a very (VERY) disturbing topic but does so with heart and with grace. I have always heard about the topics covered in this film but never imagined it would be portrayed in such a revealing and shocking manner by a Japanese film maker. Funny enough, whilst this film is primarily about the topic of young girls selling their time for money, it contains absolutely NO nudity what so ever. Instead, it very cleverly covers all aspects of this dark, dangerous and twisted black market in Tokyo- showing the perspective of the greedy girls involved, the Japanese Mafia businessman, and the lonely salary men looking for companionship.

The acting I thought was very solid and the portrayal of each of the characters very acute and detailed. A memorable scene and perhaps the pervasive “societal question” of the film, that between the mama-san proprietor of the “used panty shop” and the young girl who goes to make a trade. Is the shop there to cater to the men who have perverted fantasies about school girls or for the girls who are willing to sell their used undergarments to indulge such fantasies? It is all a bit of a downward spiral of morality and in the end the viewer feels as though he understand what drives each of the people in the film who in their own right is just looking for some form of happiness and fulfillment in a very stressful and rigid society devoid often of emotion and compassion. Along the way you also receive an accurate depiction of life in Tokyo Japan much more real and accurate than Sophia Coppola ever did justice!

It is a very clever story that encapsulate much whilst not confusing nor overbearing the viewer. This is very real Tokyo at its heart and soul.

My granddaughter loves Noddy. She has always paid attention to the opening theme song since she was 6 months old. This is a fantastic video and keeps her entertained for enough time for her mother to get things done. She is 2 now. THANK YOU to SPROUT TV!!!!!

You will love this DVD. I got it because Noddy no longer came on PBS where I live, and my son adored Noddy & his car! It was disappointing when we couldn’t get it on TV so I bought this. He loved it!

“Desperate Housewives” made its debut in 2004 to rave reviews and high Nielsen ratings. Season one of the show is considered a modern classic. For most people, the same couldn’t be said for seasons two and three. Many people though the second and third seasons were disappointing. I thought the second season was good (though not great), and the third season was a slight improvement over season two (though it still didn’t top the first season). But after watching the entire fourth season of “Desperate Housewives”, the show is back on track. This is the best season since the first.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fourth Season! Click Here

Season four of the show about those housewives from the fictional Wisteria Lane (located in the town of Fairview) was the most interesting, most intriguing, and most entertaining season since season one. Many of the same major characters are back: Susan, Lynette, Bree, Gabrielle, Edie, Mike, Carlos, Tom, Orson, and narrator Mary Alice. But what really makes the fourth season of “Desperate Housewives” so great is the addition of a new character: Katherine Mayfair. As season four begins, we find out that Katherine used to live on Wisteria Lane many years ago but has now moved back to the neighborhood with her much younger husband Adam and daughter Dylan. And yes, we can tell from the first episode that Katherine is hiding a deep dark secret that will eventually unfold as the season progresses. Some of the other major storylines throughout season four include: Lynette battling cancer (which she discovered late in season three); Susan (after marrying Mike at the end of season three) finds out that she’s pregnant; Bree faking a pregnancy to protect daughter Danielle’s real pregnancy; Mike developing a drug problem when he becomes addicted to pills; Gabrielle finding marriage to town mayor Victor Lang to be so dull that she starts having an affair with ex-husband Carlos; and probably the biggest story of the year, Wisteria Lane being destroyed by a tornado.

That tornado episode, titled “Something’s Coming” (episode #9), was easily the best episode of the season and the second best episode overall (the very best episode of “Desperate Housewives” still remains that supermarket hostage crisis episode from season three). This was reportedly the most expensive episode of “Desperate Housewives” to date, obviously since special effects played a big part in it. But just like that supermarket hostage episode, it’s a thrilling and entertaining episode that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wonder who will come out of it alive or dead.

The stars of this show once again do a great job just as they have in the previous three seasons. Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria Parker, and Nicolette Sheridan are fine as usual, but in season four they get upended by the newcomer to Wisteria Lane. Two-time Emmy winner Dana Delany (”China Beach”) is an absolute standout as Katherine Mayfair. There’s an interesting back-story involving Delany and “Desperate Housewives” when the show’s creator Marc Cherry was casting the principal roles back in 2004. Cherry originally offered Delany the role of Bree, but turned it down since she claimed it was too similar to a role she had on a short-lived TV series she starred on a few years earlier (that show was called “Pasadena”, which aired on FOX). But Cherry never gave up on her. After he created new character Katherine he wanted Delany for the part, and this time she accepted. It’s interesting because Katherine is kind of like Bree, but only darker. And Delany stepped right into the role of Katherine and made it her own. I think this was similar to what Cherry and the rest of the “Desperate Housewives” writers were trying to do two years ago when they created the Betty Applewhite character for season two and failed miserably. This time they got it right, and the writers should be congratulated for not messing up the Katherine Mayfair storyline. This was an intriguing storyline throughout season four, and it ends perfectly in the final episode. And what makes it even better, Delany’s Katherine will be back next season.

My only complaint about “Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fourth Season” is that the season was shorter than usual. You can blame that on all the writers from the small screen to the big screen for going on strike for three months, which ended shutting down the production on not only “Desperate Housewives”, but all shows on television. And that was kind of a bummer, because a few more storylines had to be cut short. For example, there was a very funny storyline involving a gay male couple that moved to Wisteria Lane, and I think the writers originally had planned to expand this storyline throughout the season. But after the writer’s strike ended and there was only room for seven episodes, the writers couldn’t expand this storyline has they had planned. Whether or not this storyline will be expanded for season five remains to be seen.

And when season five debuts in the fall of 2008, it’ll be interesting to see what will be going on. In the final moments of the last episode of season four, the action flash forwards to five years later, which I presume is where the show will pick up when season five starts. And it’ll be interesting to see what’s going on, because “Desperate Housewives” leaves us dangling with another bizarre cliffhanger: who’s the man (and it’s not Mike) that’s kissing Susan in the final scene?

In season 4 of DH we see the show going back to the basics, to the thing that made fans love DH: the friendships. The friendships of Lynette, Susan, Bree and Gabrielle, as well as each individual character, were tested over and over again and they endured. It was this quality of enduring friendship amongst women that makes this show so good.

Season 3 dealt with each women independently, barely interacting with the other friends and thus we lost that which made the show worthwhile, their interactions. Season 4 takes another route and shows the women provide each other a strong support system. Lynette relies on her friends and family to go through cancer, Bree deals with faking a pregnancy, Susan must deal with her marriage with Mike and Gabrielle must decide between Carlos and Victor.

We also see the introduction of another character, Katherine Mayfair (and of course, her many secrets which deserve to be a character all of their own). She was such an excellent character that I instantly liked her, secrets and all. Katherine was a former resident of Wisteria Lane and a friend of Susan’s. She has a ton of secrets and a way to challenge each and everyone of our Wisteria Lane ladies.

Tornadoes, blackmail (tons of blackmail), ex-husbands, drugs, maniacs, and tons of humor. This is one of the best DH seasons to date.

Though “Dr. No” and “From Russia With Love” got the ball rolling, it was “Goldfinger” (1964) that started the 007 phenomenon - establishing a cinematic formula that has endured from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan. In a recent interview, Connery said his portrayal of James Bond may have set too high a standard for the other actors to match. The same can be said for the early 007 films. With the exception of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (1969), it’s hard to top the excitement and inventiveness of “Goldfinger.” The villains, gadgets and locales are top notch, with Connery in splendid form. Admittedly, the Fort Knox climax is a bit hokey in spots and it’s obvious that American gangsters are played by British actors. Despite these dated elements, “Goldfinger” is a definite highpoint in the 007 series.

Imagine leading a guided tour of 21st century adolescents through the museum of early Bond films—”Well, kids, they weren’t like today—yes, back then, they did sit around and talk a lot more—but hey, that was to make the story and the characters more believable—O.K?”.Not O.K.,because I don’t think those explanations fly with modern ticket-buyers—otherwise we wouldn’t have “The World Is Not Enough”,which is itself a kind of rebuke to everything that used to be Bond. Those of us who made the rite of passage into (perceived)adulthood on the heels of seeing “Goldfinger” must finally admit that this is the kind of action movie they’re just not going to make anymore.First of all, there’s really not that much action—after the bang-up teaser opening,it’s mostly exposition—something quite unthinkable in today’s marketplace.Consider this—after 007 finds Shirley Eaton covered in gold, there are THREE individual segments in which Bond’s mission is discussed and instructions given—this is in the first act, mind you.Today, they’d be past the third boat chase and into the second free-fall from a plane in flight.”Goldfinger’s” next “action” highlight is a golf game—Get Out! —but what humor and suspense it generates—will Goldfinger discover the ball switch? It still puts me on the edge of my seat, and I’ve seen it two dozen times. The greatness of this movie lies in the powerful visual images it so casually presents—the Golden Girl on the bed—I won’t even try to describe the electricity that went through the audience when that scene flashed on in ‘64(and well into ‘65)—if you’re too young, ask your father to tell you about it.Oh,and the laser–you know, where it’s pointed and all that—need I mention the effect on twelve-year old boys hitherto nursed on the likes of “Son Of Flubber”?—and when Pussy Galore introduced herself—someone might just as well have set off a cherry bomb in the theatre. What I’m saying is,you had to be there. The middle-aged among us who like an occasional express ride back to childhood will want this DVD,with all it’s fabulous extras. For those of you who missed the sixties, here is an opportunity to understand your elders a little better—order “Goldfinger” today—find out what some of the excitement of our youth was all about—chances are it will lead to a happy Bond-ing experience with someone you love.

As a young child in the nineteen fifties, I used to watch this film whenever it appeared on TV on “Million Dollar Movie”. I loved it then. I love it now. Time has not diminished the capacity of this film to mesmerize and hold the viewer in its thrall.

The story line is basic. Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong), a filmmaker and entrepreneur, leads an expedition to Skull Island where he discovers its deep, dark secret. It is a land where time has stood still, and prehistoric monsters still hold sway over the island and its inhabitants. There, the natives pay homage to the one whom they revere as “Kong”, and who is, indeed, king of the island.

Denham, together with his beautiful, budding starlet, Ann Darrow (Fay Wray), as well as with the crew of the ship that brought him to Skull Island, investigates the strange ritual being performed on the island by its native population. Before she knows it, Ann finds herself captured by the natives. She is to become the bride of the mysterious “Kong”.

When Ann discovers who the mysterious “Kong” is, she starts screaming and doesn’t stop. The ship’s first mate, Jack Driscoll (Bruce Cabot), who happens to be in love with Ann, manages to rescue her from the clutches of “Kong”. Notwithstanding the fact that “Kong” has taken a shine to her, Ann is relieved to have been rescued by the man whom she loves.

Denham then arranges to capture the creature, whom he calls “King Kong” and takes him back to New York with them on the ship that brought them to Skull Island. There, King Kong makes his debut, one that movie lovers will long remember.

The special effects of this film were superlative for its time and still pass muster today. The relationship between the beauty and the beast still makes the viewer sit up and take notice. This is an attention grabbing film that is as exciting today, as when it was first released over seventy years ago. It is a truly timeless, cinema classic. Bravo!

During the tenth season of “Murder She Wrote,” a few personal surprises lurked around the corner for the show’s star, and these issues would inevitably raise questions about whether the TV franchise would continue. For years, Angela Lansbury had been plagued with bouts of hip pain, thus resulting in surgery to help rectify the situation. But would this stop the actress? Absolutely not! The show must go on, as the saying goes, and Angela was quoted: “If I need a cane for the first few shows, the writers will just write it in.”

But in November of 1994, the Lansbury family was devastated with the news that Angela’s husband, Peter Shaw (may he rest in peace), had to undergo double bypass and heart valve replacement surgery.

The production of “Murder She Wrote” was shut down for three weeks so the family could be together during this time. In the end, however, Angela and Peter triumphed over those obstacles, and the show resumed filming for the its tenth season. The results are nothing if not rewarding.

Some of the seasons’ highlights include the opener, “A Death in Hong Kong,” where on-location scenery and a strong cast make this episode a success. In “A Virtual Murder,” Jessica Fletcher and the viewing public are introduced to the fast-growing world of technology. Jessica learns first hand how murderous a virtual reality computer game can be. The 200th episode, “Bloodlines,” reunites Angela Lansbury with one of her MGM co-stars from fifty years before: Mickey Rooney. This is a landmark episode in more ways than one. Set at London’s Garrick Theatre, “White in Murder” creates a creepy atmosphere, on and off stage. Much like “White in Murder,” the 213th episode, “The Dying Game,” repeats the sinister setting, but this time in a department store where murder and death masks itself behind a mannequin. Whether or not the ending of the season bodes well with Cabot Cove fans, “Wheel of Death” sure makes its mark during a carnival event in the spring months in Maine.

So how did such a mediocre film warrant six sequels (here’s a hint…it’s all about the money)? There’s the original. Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (1993), Children of the Corn III (1995), Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering (1996), Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998), Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return (1999), and Children of the Corn: Revelation (2001)…that’s a lot of corn, or as the Native Americans call it, maize…I’ve seen the original, but not the subsequent sequels…my gut instinct tells me to avoid them. Children of the Corn, aka Stephen King’s Children of the Corn (1984), directed by Fritz Kiersch (Tuff Turf, Gor) features a solid cast including Peter Horton (”thirtysomething”) and Linda Hamilton (Terminator 2: Judgment Day). Also appearing is R.G. Armstrong (Dick Tracy), Courtney Gains (Colors, The ‘burbs) and John Franklin, who appeared 1991 film The Addams Family, along with its’ 1993 sequel, as the very hairy Cousin Itt.

The film, which primarily takes place in the small farming town of Gatlin, Nebraska, begins with a flashback, relating a particularly gruesome incident in where the children depopulate the town of nearly all adults through a good old fashion bloodbath. Fast forward three years to the present, and we have Burton (Horton) and his girlfriend Vicky (Hamilton) traveling through the Midwest as Burton has recently graduated from med school, and has been offered an internship somewhere…but that’s neither here nor there as the pair get lost, have an accident, and soon find themselves looking for aid in Gatlin…but guess what? Gatlin appears all but deserted…except for the children, who’ve formed some kind of weird cult, led by the incredibly creepy man-child Isaac (Franklin). Initially their idolatry seems to be centered on the corn, but later we learn it’s not so much the corn as what lurks under the corn. Burton and Vicky soon find themselves in a world of trouble, as the corn is thirsting for holy sacrifices, and they’re at the top of the list (I wouldn’t mind initiating a religious ceremony with that Linda Hamilton…that is the soft and sexy Linda from the original Terminator movie, not the bony and intensely scary Linda from T2: Judgment Day)…

The film is based on a Stephen King short story taken from his book Night Shift, which I’ve never read, but I have read a number of his other books, many of which were later adapted to film, with varying degrees of success…anyone else besides me sit through Maximum Overdrive? Okay, Children of the Corn isn’t as bad as that was, but it is lacking something…it’s not the acting…Horton, whom I despise for no other reason than he was on that TV show `thirtysomething’ was actually pretty good. As far as Linda Hamilton, well, I think she’s a good actress, provided she’s given something to work with, and that wasn’t the case here. The real fun is watching the performances of Franklin and Gains, as Isaac and Malachai, respectively. Franklin is extremely disconcerting as the leader of the group, mainly because his appearance is that of a child, but a closer look would make you think twice as his face and voice seem to indicate some much older. Turns out Franklin, who suffered from some sort of hormone deficiency, was actually much older, like 23 at the time of the film’s release. As far as Gains, he presents the most intense performance as Isaac’s enforcer and right hand man, but I felt like he got into it just a little too much (in the featurette Gains speaks of his craft and how he brought his character to the screen…I do appreciate it when actors give to the screen, but I think Gains took his modest role a bit too seriously, trying to make more of it than it was…but since the production in general was pretty bland, this overacting wasn’t necessarily unwelcome). These two guys come off really good as the antagonists, mainly because they’re so completely annoying I wanted to beat them both to a pulp (wait for the scene when Malachai is walking down the center of the street calling for Burton to come out, yelling `Outlander!”…you’ll understand what I mean by annoying). As far as the direction, I have no real complaints, as Kiersch seems capable…in the featurette he speaks a lot of what he was trying to accomplish with regards to the sense of direction, and in some areas I think he met his goal, but others I think his aspirations extended beyond his capabilities. So what’s the problem with the film? It’s the story…well, not the original story, but the adaptation of the story. As I said, I’m familiar with many of King’s works, and I know he takes a lot of time to craft his tales, utilizing detail like it was going out of style. I think one of the things that makes his story so popular is his ability to paint a visual using words…and he also seems to do this in terms that are accessible to an extremely wide audience. And I think this is a main factor that ends up hurting many of the films that are adapted from his novels…they lack the focus on what’s important to the story. I think this is why we are seeing his more recent works produced as television mini-series…because more time can be spent developing the story and presenting the details, in my opinion.

I saw this movie when it came out in ‘84 and have had some strange connection to it ever since.

What’s to like? Well, what has always struck me is how well the children are adapted to the surroundings. I actually BELIEVE that these children lived in Gatlin “before” the filming of the movie. They seem very at home and the small town feel is somehow legitimate. The sound is very good for an older flick, being given the 5.1 treatment, and the score itself is practially worth seeing the movie for… I just love that chanting “Omen-ish” score, always have. The transfer I’d say is above average, though in places it falters a bit, there is also a handsome insert book that comes with it which is unusual for a rather lowbudget movie. I really like all the leads here, specifically the look on young Sarah’s face when “Vickie” is taken out to the clearing, she honestly looks to be in fear, I almost feel sorry for the young actress.

What’s to hate? Well, aside from the odd smalltown feel there really aren’t many chills from a horror movie standpoint. Also, I’ve never really liked the end, often turning it off b4 the poor CG ending, but hey, this is ‘84 afterall.

If you have a few dollars and are looking for a somewhat surreal look at small town life, you could do worse than giving Children Of The Corn a look.

My boys love the show and watch it regularly. I have already purchased the entire season from a legitimate download store months ago, so I dislike the fact that The entire season will cost $30 list to buy on 3 separate DVDs.

The entire season should be available for $20 list, preferably less. The producers appear to be delivering customers to the legal download stores. Good news for the download services, less so for DVD retailers.

“Bakugan Battle Brawlers” seems to be another one of your garden variety anime series where creepy creatures emerge out of trading cards (i.e. “Yu-Gi-Oh GX” and “Duel Masters”, two shows that were on Cartoon Network previously). This show, however, is a little different. Yes, the show has kids throwing down trading cards with monsters and things printed on them, but also, they toss tiny plastic balls that pop out into small creature forms, and when it’s battle time, look out !

Join Dan and his friends as they travel into a parallel universe and try to save the world from destruction in five action-packed episodes on this DVD. Plus, as a neat bonus, there’s an exclusive Bakugan trading card enclosed with the DVD.
