I was enthusiastic to check this movie out because I really liked the docudrama “A Haunting in Connecticut” which was section of a series titled “Haunting” by the Discovery Channel. This movie was supposedly inspired by those just events. In the docudrama, Karen and Ed Parker and their family proceed into an primitive home in Connecticut, not realising the house harbors entities that are far from benign. The most affected is the couple’s 14-year-old son, Paul, who seems to be most susceptible to the hauntings. In desperation, the family contacts Edward and Lorraine Warren, the same people who investigated another notorious insecure house that became known as “The Amityville Anxiety”.

In the movie version, the memoir remains right to the novel to some extent. Virginia Madsen plays Sara Campbell, whose teenage son Matt [Kyle Gallner] is suffering from some compose of brain cancer. The treatment requires them to gain a long commute and to nick on the proceed time, Sara decides to lease a house terminate by to the hospital. She finds an faded house for cheap [the family already has money problems] and finds out it mature to abet a darker purpose than a area. The family moves in anyway, and straight away Matt begins seeing things and hearing noises. He moves into the basement which has a sealed off room. Upon finally opening it, Matt discovers what the house broken-down to be - a mortuary and funeral home. Soon, the rest of the family begins to gape and hear queer things and Matt together with Wendy [Amanda Crew] investigate the history of the house, discovering some truly horrific facts about the house’s sad past, having to do with death, necrophilia, missing bodies and a horrific tragedy.

The movie is actually well-paced - I did not salvage the saunter plodding nor stupid. There is no gore or over-the-top special effects here. In many ways, this movie reminded me of The Amityville Scare II with the son of the house being the focus of the hauntings. Some scenes were scary, especially the flashbacks to the past absorbing incidents of necrophilia. The acting was ok, not mammoth, but Kyle Gallner was quite credible in his role.

What disappointed me was the omission of two central characters in the movie - they did not include the Warrens in the movie, who played a essential role in the exact case. Instead, the movie shows a priest, Reverend Popescu [Elias Koteas] as the person the family turns to for befriend. His acting was not very impressive in this movie. Once again, I felt the priest role here was reminiscent of the one portrayed in The Amityville Dismay.

Conclusion - for those who worship the scare genre, this movie does not really bring anything current to the table. The acting and effects are decent enough, and I did earn myself entertained. Recommended as a rental.

***May Own Spoilers***

This movie felt unbelievably flat. Not enough to perform us care about Matt. I wanted to know Jonah (the dude on the hide with ectoplasm streaming from his mouth) . All I got was flashes of “scary” images with a promise of better things. What’s astronomical about scary movies regarding ghosts from the past isn’t the paranormal, but rather the history. Give us more of the memento mori, more flashbacks of Jonah contacting spirits. It was never explained why the mortician former voodoo and sunless magic. I would prefer to gain more money by having more ghosts around, but wasn’t Jonah a factual median anyway? He didn’t need extra ghosts to give the clients what they needed. I felt totally cheated when it came to Jonah. The most absorbing parts of the film were flashbacks to his life. He looked so terrorized and confused. I would have considerable rather watched him deal with his gift and his oppressor than perceive Matt and his one-dimensional family interact.

Worth watching? Yeah. Distinct. Rent it, though.

If you like Jimmy then this is a great DVD for you. As usual he is up to his usual hijinks with all his friends. Sure to entertain!

Two or three years after Timmy and Jimmy get split to each others worlds Timmy and Jimmy Meet again mainly for the success of the shows post crossover. This is a middle chapter of a trilogy which goes really downhill just like the matrix. I think everything with calamutis and Jordan and Anti fairies was just time filler to play support to the love triangle that actually steals the show and turns this middle chapter into something fun and exciting. You do have to look past the extremly dumb celebrity refrences with Sheen and Morgan Freeman I actually changed the channel it was so dumb. Nobody cared about the comic relief becuase the eyes were on a well developed love trinagle I was actually very interested in what Cindy had to say and both had good sides to root foor and bad sides to root against. I would have given it 4 1/2 stars but the ending send it down a 1/2 star.

This is about 35 hours of documentaries from the History Channel’s “Modern Marvels” series. Most of the disks have four 45-minute episodes made up of about a half dozen disasters per episode.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The History Channel Presents The Best of Modern Marvels! Click Here

The first 4 or 5 disks are mostly death-and-destruction. The disasters range from drilling into a salt dome under a lake (oops!), 600 people dying in fire at the over-crowded Cocoanut Grove nightclub, airplane crashes, bridge collapses, building collapses, dam collapses, mine fires, tanker and paddlewheeler explosions, tower collapses, and…well, you get the idea.

Many of the disasters were a culmination of a series of little errors here and there that finally added up to the big problem, while some were (as one person explains) a “failure of Construction 101″ in the case of a parking structure collapse.

Other episodes are more benign “Modern Marvels”, such as rubber, distilleries, candy, monumental buildings and bridges, high-tech sex, and toilet tech :-)

The minor negatives include the narrator’s delivery which uses too many dramatic pauses so that you don’t really…know when he has finished…speaking. Also, there is no episode guide booklet, and the individual DVD cases are a little vague as to the exact contents.

I bought this when it was on one of Amazon’s sales, and it worked out to less than three bucks per disk. At the regular going price, it is probably still a good value.

If you enjoy Modern Marvels: Technical and How-They-Do-It documentaries;

this is great. Several disaster episodes and one with a sex-theme which should have been replaced with something more consistent. However, if you get a good price for this huge collection, it won’t matter.

I am not Jewish. I love this show! It is extremely well done and portrays Jewish Americans in an honest and wonderful way. I’m perfectly happy with my own faith, but while watching this great show I felt I could be very happy as part of this great culture. Bravo to all Jews who keep their faith and their culture!

I watched the second and third two-hour segments on PBS. It was very beautifully done, very moving. Caveat: I am Jewish and I grew up post-WWII with parents who were children prior to WWII. This presentation gave me a background I needed; it filled in a lot of holes in my understanding of what my parents life was like and what was the context that I was raised in. It also has beautiful music, and graphics are used extremely well. But, CAUTION: I have no idea how well this collection will be received by people for whom the information is NOT so personal. Will this interest you if you did not live it? Perhaps.

Although much of the film may be a bit slow for American tastes, the pace is well considered and the leisurely segments only make the manic episodes all the more enjoyable.

Like the Disney Hit “Meet the Robinsons”, much of the movie doesn’t seem to make sense, until the ending when everything comes together in a brilliant, laugh-out-loud conclusion.

A MUST SEE !!

The Dick Van Dyke Show. The Lucy Show. The Odd Couple.

What on earth do these wonderful old T.V. shows have to do with Mr. Bean’s Holiday?

Well, not a whole lot thematically, but there is one very significant tie between them. The classic shows mentioned above were not children’s programs. They were prime-time comedy series aimed at adults. They were clean as a whistle for the most part, as shows then tended to be, but the subjects of the shows revolved around divorce, marital troubles, problems at the office etc.

Unfortunately, modern entertainment equates “adult” with sex and violence. In other words, the word adult has been appropriated. Nothing could possibly be funny, clever, inventive or exciting if there isn’t at least some sex or controversy right? It’s a pretty sad state when “adult” has come to mean “15 year-old boy” :/

Now before you roll your eyes, I am as far from being a prude as you can get. I own and admire scores of R-rated films, and listen to music that would make most “hipsters” hair curl with shock and disgust. But there was a time when writers actually had to be clever to get a laugh, imagine that. Any idiot can walk into a theater full of adolescents, drop the F-bomb and get roars of laughter, and do, now that was easy. The industry has gone from using salatious material to be thought-provoking (Kubrick, Scorsese) to relying on it for an easy thrill.

Well just when you thought that the art of being funny without body parts and fart jokes was a lost art, along comes Mr. Bean. Rowan Atkinson reminds us with this funny, charming film, that funny is funny. My 9-year-old roared with delight throughout the entire film, as did my wife and I. And the added kick was, it was the first time in a long, long time we did it as a family, without my wife holding the remote with a death-grip to skip over something. It was a nice, and far-too overdue feeling.

Of course there are several references thoughout the movie that will sail over the heads of most children, a scene satirizing a pretentious, arty filmmaker for instance (which was hilarious), but the lion’s share of the old, almost silent film-style sight gags and elaborately choreographed Buster Keaton stunts (The amazing walk over a busy highway was pretty impressive), will entertain anyone with a bit of wonder left in them.

A previous reviewer believed that today’s children would be bored by Mr. Bean’s goofy antics. Sadly, these days he may be right. There are no CGI thingies crashing into each other, no underdressed teen girls chatting on cell phones at the mall, and believe it or not, no fart jokes. But you know something, when I watched my daughter laugh and applaud at the end, I think …maybe he’s wrong.

There is a very popular commonly-exercised steady trick of spatting at the US by creating movies about non-stop mafia-feuds based on inter-racial abuse and hatred, on which landscape sex scenes are the most entertaining viewing element of, while referring to classic masterpieces as this film presented.

Beautiful girl and a very handsome sexually advanced baby-looking block of a misunderstandable age are really nice in a particular act of more-to-imagine-than-shown.

THE INVISIBLE MAN- Claude Rains is awesome as the man whose invisibility serum slowly rots his brain. Hunted by police, he sets out to cure himself and get revenge on the man who betrayed him. Excellent stuff! Check out the running pair of pants scene! THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS- has Vincent Price as a man on death row, framed for a murder he did not commit. He gets some help in the form of the invisibilty serum and simply walks out of prison! Can he prove his innocense and find the real killer before te serum drives him mad? Great sequel! THE INVISIBLE WOMAN- This one is strictly for laughs. A scientist (John Barrymore) invents an invisibility machine with his assistant (Margaret “Wicked Witch Of The West” Hamilton). A young woman volunteers to be turned invisible and the slapstick begins. A gang of thugs wants the machine for obvious criminal reasons. The gang even includes a stooge (Shemp Howard)! Worth a look. THE INVISIBLE AGENT- Jon Hall is the title character, dropped behind enemy lines during WW II. Can he foil the nefarious plans of the nazis? Sir Cedrick Hardwicke is head of the gestapo and Peter Lorre is an evil japanese spy. Not bad at all! INVISIBLE MAN’S REVENGE- Jon Hall is back as the invisible man. This time out, cheated and betrayed by old “friends”, he seeks vengeance at all cost. He encounters a scientist (John Carradine) who has been turning animals invisible with his secret serum, and you can guess the result! Very good! This collection is yet another goldmine from universal’s creaky vaults! Add it to your monster list…

Between directing the original “Frankenstein” in 1931 and his masterpiece “Bride of Frankenstein” in 1935, James Whale put out a little gem called “The Invisible Man” in 1933. In some ways I rate “The Invisible Man” above “Frankenstein.” For one thing “The Invisible Man” has a great musical score which heightens the drama in many scenes and helps to speed the pace of the film. The original “Frankenstein” had no musical score (strange one was never added for re-release as it would have improved an already great film tremendously) as musical scores weren’t commonplace until a few years later. I also think that Whale had developed greatly as a director between 1931 and 1933. “Frankenstein” has many scenes that seem to be stagey and lack the finesse of Whale’s later films.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Invisible Man - The Legacy Collection! Click Here

In many ways “The Invisible Man” is Universal’s most horrific horror film of the 1930s. Dracula was a vampire who killed to sustain his own existence, Frankenstein’s Monster was a misunderstood and sympathetic creature who killed out of fear or anger, while The Invisible Man is a man driven mad by an illicit drug who kills out of shear pleasure. He commits mass murder during the film on a scale much greater than any other Universal picture. We also have to remember he is at his core a man not a monster.

Claude Rains gives a magnificent performance, in his US film debut, in the title role. Rains, who’s face was only seen on screen briefly at the end of the film, had a deep distinctive voice which was perfect for a role that was more about voice than body. This role was the start of a long and very successful film career for Rains who played costarring and supporting roles in classic films from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Invisible Man - The Legacy Collection! Click Here

Also in the cast are Henry Travers, Gloria Stuart and Una O’Connor. Travers was a talented character actor who may be most recognized to film fans as Clarence the inept angel in the holiday classic “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Stuart, who as a starlet in the 30s appeared in dozens of films before retiring from the screen, had a career resurrection in recent years when she was cast as “old Rose” in the mega-hit “Titanic.” O’Connor, supplying comic relief as a busybody inn keeper’s wife, played numerous supporting roles in Hollywood’s golden age including a the role of Minnie in Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein.”

Of course, by 21st century standards “The Invisible Man” is antiquated. The special effects, undoubtedly cutting edge for their time, are not very impressive in the age of computer technology. Having said that, I must admit this film is still entertaining and exciting to watch. The performances, especially Claude Rains, still hold up and the direction by Whale remains spot on. If you sit back and imagine yourself as a moviegoer in the 1930s, having never seen special effects like this before, it’s easy to see how stunning this film must have been to audiences more than 70 years ago.

The $20 price tag is well worth it just to own “The Invisible Man” but in this Legacy Collection you also receive ALL of the Universal “Invisible” films (minus “Abbot & Costello Meet The Invisible Man”). It could be argued that “The Invisible Man Returns” and “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” are the only true sequels as they follow the adventures of Jack Griffin’s (Claude Rains’ character in the original) brother. “… Returns” is distinguished by Vincent Price in the title role. These two films are pleasant B-movie efforts by Universal and part of the second horror cycle of the 1940s. “The Invisible Woman” is more comedy than horror and features John Barrymore in the twilight of his career. “The Invisible Agent” was a wartime adventure featuring Universal’s top action hero of the 40s, Jon Hall, using invisibility to fight Nazis.

Having added The Invisible Man, The Mummy and The Creature to its series of Legacy Collections, I sincerely hope Universal continues with the balance of its horror titles of the 30s and 40s. I hope to see a release of the films that teamed Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi (”The Black Cat,” “The Raven,” “The Invisible Ray,” and “Black Friday”), a release of the Inner Sanctum series starring Lon Chaney and a set with all the one-off horror films (”Murders in the Rue Morgue,” the 1943 “Phantom of the Opera,” “Man-Made Monster,” “The Mad Ghoul,” etc.) of Universal’s Golden Age.

It is good to see that Esther William’s films that did not make Volume 1 of her DVD collection are being given a general release with lots of extras rather than being put on DVD-R into the Warner Archive. The Archive is a good idea for obscure films in which visuals are not that important - Marie Dressler’s films of the early 1930’s are good examples of such films - but Esther’s Technicolor musicals needed to be restored to their original visual splendor to be appreciated. The following is the press release for this film indicating extras, costars, and brief plot outlines.

These six musicals are usually very light in plot, involve exotic settings, and have plenty of opportunities for musical interludes besides Esther’s water ballets, which are beautiful. The time of Esther William’s peak popularity was a time of upheaval for MGM, which is where these films were made. After the war, MGM began a downward spiral brought on largely by the competition of TV but also by MGM’s inabilities to conform to the public’s changing tastes. One place where MGM continued to do well was in their musicals, at least until the late 1950’s, and Esther’s films were among their peak product in this department.

Thanks so much to TCM and Warner Home Video for producing the long overdue and much anticipated second volume of Esther Williams films.

I am thrilled that “THRILL OF A ROMANCE” (no pun intended) is included - my all-time favourite Esther film.

This lady has brought continuous joy and pleasure to millions of people with her warm, engaging personality and excellent swimming and athletic talents and the films all boast lovely music scores and songs, and many other talented players.

The films were originally produced when Metro Goldwyn Mayer was at its zenith, providing the world with delicious family and general entertainment.

Much appreciation also to the previous Reviewer who has provided us with all the feast of information about the very generous extras on the individual DVD pressings.

WELL DONE!

Yes, you read correctly. This is, to my knowledge, the only Islamic Horror movie. Now, Muslim nations such as Pakistan, Turkey, etc. have produced plenty of horror movies. But this is the only one that presents the genre of horror from truly Islamic mindset. All the others were copies of Western / Christian based horror.

In a nutshell, a concert flautist and his astronomer girlfriend go to rural Turkey to investigate a solar disturbance that threatens the earth. While there, the flautist is taken under the wing by a Sufi (Islamic mystic) who helps prepare him to battle a powerful djinn (demonic spirit) - and they do battle using nothing but music as their weapons.

The film has a few flaws, and the symbolism will be a bit confusing to some who are unfamiliar with the base material. But all is all, its a good film; and if nothing else, it holds its own as a unique piece of cinema.
