The movie is really suited, 4 stars anyway. The following comments pertain to the quality of the transfer to DVD. In that respect, let’s execute determined we’re on the same page. On the spine of the case of this DVD is the WB logo, the designation “DVD Video”, and the number 11787. In the help description on the case, it is designated: “STANDARD VERSION: This film has been modified from is (sic) novel version: It has been formatted to fit your cover.” In other words, it’s a pan-and-scan version, and indeed one that is so poor that valuable information during the movie is lopped off the visible viewing dwelling. The image quality is grainy and disgusting, like a transfer from some archaic VHS video tape that’s been laying around on a dusty shelf ever since the movie was made. The sound quality stinks: One must turn up the volume to advance maximum in order to hear the dialog, which even then is badly muffled at times. Whoever at Warner Brothers was responsible for this mess demonstrates their total contempt for the customer.

Like BLADE RUNNER before it, when FRANTIC came out in U.S theaters in 1988, it’s box-office performance was rather dissappointing. The reason for this can be attributed to the fact that FRANTIC (like BLADE RUNNNER) was not cranked out by the Hollywood cookie cutter machine, and therefore not a movie for American masses. Delving a bit deeper into this, there are aspects of the film’s feel, situation, performance and get that I’d like to touch on:

FEEL

Despite the fact that it’s made by Warner Bros., FRANTIC has a distinctive European production feel to it. Yes, it’s filmed in Paris, but the feel, gallop and cinematography construct one realize that Frantic is really a European film which has an American star at its helm. It’s not often that large stars, such as Harrison Ford, step out of the Hollywood production scene to design a European-type feature. It’s no surprise, then, that FRANTIC was hugely successfull in Europe.

PLOT

The film has the spirit of Hitchcock throughout it. Even its premise: Harrison Ford’s(Dr. Richard Walker) wife mysteriously vanishes from his hotel upon arriving in Paris for a conference. It differes from other films with a similar residence (such as THE VANISHING and BREAKDOWN), in that the audience is unbiased as at a loss as Walker is. We only know what he knows. We gawk parts of the mystery as he methodically puts the peices together. This aspect is what really creates the film’s titillating suspense and makes one narrate and empathise with Dr. Walker’s wretchedness. In the afore mentioned movies, there is a bi-linear status where we leer what is going on from the kidnapper’s point of opinion, which form things all-too sure.

PERFORMANCE

Buy,Download, Or Stream Frantic! Click Here

For those critics that say that Harrison Ford can’t act, they obviously haven’t seen this movie. To me, this is his best perfmance of his famed career. Harrison Ford is required to be in every scene of the film, since he is our eyes and ears. This is not an easy job, even for the most seasoned of actors, but Ford pulls it off masterfully.

SCORE

Ennio Morricone’s accept for this film is very appropriate. He weaves in suspensfull strings throughout the film along with jazzy undertoans and meloncholy pieces brilliantly complementing the Ford’s performance and Polanski’s vision. The opening and closing titles are distinctively Morricone, mixing an orchestra strings theme with an electric bass and drum state. Alas, the soundtrack CD has been out of print for years…..

FRANTIC is not a perfect film, but clearly, it has not been given the credit that it deserves. It is a film that should not go unnoticed by movie-goers that like atmospheric, suspense-filled thrillers with first-class permormances.

Generally panned by critics upon its release, Point Atomize has gone on to indulge in something of a minor cult following among action film fans who appreciate its breathlessly choreographed action sequences sharp bold bank heists, car chases, skydiving and, of course, surfing - one of the film’s most valuable selling points. The film came along after Patrick Swayze’s phenomenal success with Ghost and he went completely in the opposite direction with this film. Point Smash also proved to be a warm-up for Keanu Reeves who would become a full-fledged action hero with Urge a few years later.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Point Break! Click Here

Point Smash trots out and downright revels in stereotypes: Utah is the all-American trustworthy guy, Pappas is the burn out cop and they are constantly being chewed out by their jerk-off boss (McGinley) for their screwball antics. Surprisingly, it’s Swayze’s Zen master/surfer/bank robber that doesn’t plunge into an easy stereotype and comes across as the most engrossing, charismatic character in the entire movie. And you have to give the credit to Swayze and his oddly though-provoking performance. There is a nice scene where he tells Utah his philosophy of surfing, “It’s a position of mind. It’s that state where you lose yourself and fetch yourself.” We earn ourselves rooting not for Reeves’ bland FBI agent but Swayze’s thrillseeking surfer.

Point Fracture is the epitome of a guilty pleasure: to monotonous to defend rationally but with action sequences too frigid to dismiss totally. It’s a expansive, loud droll book of a movie and it knows it and has the conviction to go for it. But is it worth purchasing on DVD if you already gain a copy?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Point Break! Click Here

First up are eight deleted scenes that include more footage of Utah trying to surf. We also discover him find more disaster from his boss for his undercover work. There are other itsy-bitsy bits of excised footage that doesn’t really amount to all that grand.

“It’s Earn or Rupture” is a retrospective featurette. Busey, Petty and Swayze all contribute current interviews for this DVD and talk about their experiences making the movie.

“Pace the Wave” examines the spirituality of surfing. The ocean is a double-edged sword - at once very stunning but also very perilous. This extra also takes a brief peek at the surfer culture.

“Adrenaline Junkies” examines the enthralling stunts staged in the movie. Like his character, Swayze was into skydiving but the studio did not want him to do it. However, if you gape at the first skydiving sequence, he really jumped out of the plane!

“On Location: Malibu” is a more light-hearted extra as two of the Ex-Presidents (who were sincere surfers) John Philbin and Bojesse Christopher capture us on a mini-tour of key locations in Malibu obsolete in the movie. They crack jokes and reminisce about key scenes.

Also included are three trailers and a behind-the-scenes stills gallery.

Review

A gang of Southern California surfers scoot up the waves, while enjoying the sun, sand and the sea. But in their spare time they also double up as Bank robbers and commit their crimes masked as American presidents. The gang led by Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) have been making some serious hits.

Finally the law in the build of FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) and his partner, Pappas (Gary Busey) suspect the sand lovers and determine to infiltrate them by going undercover.

Throw in skydiving, some blooming boy male bonding action and a puny bit of worship into this cocktail, this turns out to be a graceful decent film. The acting is saved with trustworthy pacing and a commendable script; which is not as predictable as 1 might reflect.

It’s worth a peer, definetly!!!

The Dvd

The film itself will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with both English Dolby Digital 5.1 and 4.0 Dolby Surround tracks.

Extras will include deleted scenes (Holistic Fitness With Agent Pappas, Agent Johnny Utah Thinks He Can Surf, Tyler Saves Johny From The Waves, Penetration Of The Social Infrastructure, Tyler & Johnny Use Time Alone In The Water, A Basic Hit & Speed, Tyler Accuses Johnny Of Using Her, and Johnny & Bodhi Talk About Robbing Banks), an It’s Do or Fracture featurette, a Lope the Wave featurette, an Adrenaline Junkies featurette, an On Location: Malibu featurette, a quiet gallery, and three theatrical trailers

++ Though the inital dvd loses the DTS track.. the DTS track was horrendous in the 1st site…So for me personally, i’d rather not have it….

I read Mr. Maltin’s brief review and was astonished that somebody who is in the business of reviewing films could so easily write this movie off. This film is hilarious; it has an innocence that we don’t study noteworthy anymore. Don Knotts was a comedic genius, I’d without hesitation achieve him on a par with Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, Jim Carey. He plays the nerdly goofball brilliantly, and we can all discover a bit of ourselves in his various awkward moments. This movie skillfully mocks the Chilly War tension with it’s parody of the Dwelling Rush, and there’s even a dinky romance as Don lusts for a beauty who barely acknowledges his existence until she hears that he’s going to be an astronaut. The soundtrack is mountainous as well, very gay stuff and it reminds me of the musty Sunday night Disney show’s music.

My wife and I watched this on Septemeber 15, 2001, four days after September 11, 2001. It was exactly the note for helping us to forget for a moment the ugliness of the accurate world.

I’ve never been very impressed by Mr. Maltin. He gives terse conclusions which are unsubstantiated by specific references. I’m 41 years ragged and this movie entertained me like few others. Don Knotts is an undervalued classic; my bet is that after he passes away there will be a colossal revival for his work.

Once again Leonard Maltin is improper, bad, harmful (recognize above) . You either like Don Knotts or you don’t. For those who do, and there are millions of us, his comedies from the 1960s like “The Reluctant Astronaut” are very engrossing, and, yes, very comic films.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Reluctant Astronaut! Click Here

I grew up in the 1960s and “The Reluctant Astronaut” was another of those Don Knott’s comedies that the whole family was taken to the drive-in theatre on a Friday night. For Leonard Maltin to call this childish is an unfair statement. I’m almost forty now and I serene Cherish watching this movie as every bit as I did aid in ‘67. I would never pay a dime to sight Leonard Maltin act and I always turn the channel whenever he comes on television with one of his one sided reviews.

What is funnier than seeing Knott’s up in location opening a special can that shoots out peanut butter and then proceeds to do a dance around him like a snake? I am on the floor rolling! And who would ever believe that Leslie Nielsen would ever become the icon for 90s comedies that he has today? He is very straight in this film which gives the film balance.

They don’t movies like this anymore. I highly recomend this video. Rob it now before it goes out of print.

Addio Zio Tom: 7 out of 10: Well they do not make them like this anymore, and let us face it they never really did. This is really three separate films brought together in a blender, set on random. The first film is a highly effective expose on slave treatment and the slave trade in the old south, (the slave ship scenes blows Hollywood fare like Armistad out of the water). Using a cast of thousands and exposing practices such as selective breeding that are politely not discussed on American shores (just ask Jimmy the Greek.) It simply is one of the most realistic display’s of 18th and 19th century slave life ever shown on film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Shockumentary : Extreme Collection (Africa Addio - Director’s Cut / Addio Zio Tom! Click Here

Then there is a second film. This is a dated and looking back rather silly collection, of news footage from the late sixties and early seventies that documents race riots. In addition, all the participants speak in Italian. This creates an almost Woody Allen feel to the dub (It gives What’s up Tiger Lilly a run for its money complete with ragtime music cementing the silliness of what should be serious proceedings.)

The last movie is a sexploitation film dealing largely with Mandingo fantasies and containing a copious amount of child porn. (I guess National Geographic rules apply when showing thirteen-year-old Hatian children naked). Tasteful does not enter into the conversation. Political correctness is shattered so badly one must feel for those sensitive souls that cannot laugh at ridiculousness of the manipulation.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Shockumentary : Extreme Collection (Africa Addio - Director’s Cut / Addio Zio Tom! Click Here

Making matters worse, the three films are intertwined together seemingly at random with comic buffoonery breaking out during serious scenes. For example, a slave auction is apt to turn into a Benny Hill episode for no apparent reason. Add on a poorly done black revenge fantasy coming, narratively at least, out of nowhere. Anti-white, anti-black and for the apparent sake of inclusion anti-Semitic they once again simply do not make them like this anymore. (It is illegal for one thing)

Overlong by at least an hour and very poorly thought out in places Addio Zio Tom wears out its welcome but for a short while, at least it exposes the truth and makes one think.

This topic has been ignored and should be part of the full understanding of the era.

I am a strong Christian and believer of GOD and the bible. I have always been fascinated in biblical history and the locations of people, places, objects, and events. When it shows you the scripture describing an area and then they show you the area, it is really cool. The winding “wilderness” leading up to the flat, assembling area before the crossing, and then the shallow and flat land bridge, combined with fossilized/coralized chariot wheels makes for a convincing argument…and it just makes sense. In regards to Mt. Sinai, if you study your bible, the Hebrews only cross the Red Sea one time. They cross the Red Sea, THEN go to the foot of Mt. Sinai and camp out. This means they are in Saudi Arabia. They show the alleged Mt. Sinai mountain and the rock Moses split. All very cool stuff. Buy this documentary and enjoy it!

This Is a documentary done obviously by biblical scholars, and a few biblical archeologists. I recommend this even to those who scoff at the historical facts of the Bible. Has many facts recorded and documented by both biblical and nonbiblical scientists, each with their own point of view but neither can discredit the others, as well as recorded facts that cannot be ignored. It amazed me to see what archeologists already know and choose to ignore in thier “Search for truth”. Some of this stuff was totally skipped in any of my history books!

My sons (ages 6 and 4) love this new animated series, The Spectacular Spider-Man. The show is much better suited for younger audiences than Spider-Man’s last animated series, which lasted only one season on MTV in 2003.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Spectacular Spider-Man, Vol. 3! Click Here

This series features all of Spider-Man’s most famous villians, including the Green Goblin, Venom, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Vulture, Rhino and Electro. In Volume 3, Peter Parker finds himself amidst more dangerous arch enemies, including the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and Tombstone.

If you absolutely must buy a DVD right now (birthday present, etc.) this is a good choice for Spider-Man fans. Amazon has the DVD priced $5 below suggested retail price ($19.95) and this is a good choice for young children who love Spider-Man.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Spectacular Spider-Man, Vol. 3! Click Here

The more economical decision is to wait for a DVD set release of all 26 episodes from Seasons 1 and 2, which should be priced around $30. It was announced earlier this year that Season 2 would move from the CW network to Disney XD. Season 2 is scheduled to begin in March 2009. However, the Spectacular Spider-Man ended production after completing the 26th episode (the end of Season 2). A third season might happen, depending on the ratings Season 2 gets on Disney XD.

In summary, I’d rate The Spectacular Spider-Man series five stars based on the entertainment value for young superhero fans. The shows are accessible without being too scary or adult for the under-10 audience. However, by marketing the first season into four DVDs, I deduct two stars. The series is overpriced, especially in light of the current economy.

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” has won a lot of viewers due to its modern theme and its ability to attract and entertain Spider-Man fans of all ages.

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series for the next generation. Peter Parker is no longer the bookworm that is an outcast in the whole school. No glasses, no bad clothing and no self-esteem issues like the original teenager of the comic book series. In fact, the spider he has been bit by is not radioactive but genetically altered.

This Peter Parker is cooler and even sports a man bag (or school bag) and has a birthmark.

In volume 3, Spider-Man learned that the Big Man is Tombstone and that he will be in for a major surprise when he finds out the identity of the Green Goblin.

The episodes in volume two are as follows:

Episode 7 - Catalysts - It’s the Midtown High Fall Formal and Peter Parker brings his date, Mary Jane Watson, a beautiful red head that his Aunt May set up. Meanwhile, the Green Goblin makes his appearance and he challenges the Big Man aka Tombstone.

Episode 8 - Reaction - As Dr. Otto Octavius is working on an experiment to create more super villains, the Green Goblin locks him in that experiment room and transforms Octavius to the Dr. Octopus.

Episode 9 - The Uncertainty Principle - While Colonel John Jameson tries to land his damaged space shuttle, Spider-Man battles Green Goblin and learns of his true identity.

As mentioned, “THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series that has caught a lot of attention and even IGN has voted it as #30 in their “TOP 100 BEST ANIMATED TV SHOWS” poll. Unlike other Spider-Man animated series, Spider-Man’s physique matches a young teenager (as it should).

And for us older folks used to the classic animated series or older comic books and have young children, there is always something entertaining with Spider-Man throughout the years, no matter how much it differs from what we grew up with, the soul of Spider-Man and the characters are faithful but adjusted for modern times.

And it’s definitely a series that we can watch and enjoy with our children. Another fun and exciting volume of “The Spectacular Spider-Man”.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

Video is presented in 1:78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Animation is nice and vibrant. Lines are clean, characters and objects are simple with shadows and not as much detail when it comes to the backgrounds. But the choice to do this was to replicate fluidity of Spider-Man in the films. But overall, the animation is good and clean.

Audio is presented in English 5.1 (Dolby Digital) and French (Dolby Surround).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are no special features but trailers/previews.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” has been a pretty solid series thus far. Again, it’s not the Spider-Man I grew up with but for a new generation watching this, it’s adapted for a modern setting, its animated much differently than any Spider-Man animations in the past but everything works.

Watching it with my son, I think it was great to find a series that would be appealing to the young children, teenagers and the adults.

I’ve read several interviews with series developers Victor Cook and Greig Weisman and both are Spider-Man fans but also fans of other genres such as Hong Kong films and also grabbing ideas from different eras, may it be from “Ultimate Spider-Man”, the films and thus certain purists may have a hard time with it but again, as a fan of the comic books and the many incarnations of Spider-Man animated series, whats important is that this series remains faithful to the characters.

Sure, they may have different storylines of how the villains became to be what they are but still, the essence of who Peter Parker is and having to be this hero but yet knowing that it will affect his personal relationships with those close to him is still intact.

Episodes 7-9 was enjoyable as the previous episodes. And I like how the series captures the relationship (or lack of) the Osborn family between Harry and his father and how the Green Goblin is quite central to that storyline. And you know, when the Green Goblin is around, expect to see quite a bit of action between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin.

Also, it’s interesting to see how the Big Man (L. Thompson Lincoln) aka Tombstone will be used in the series. So, far he has been able to manhandle Spider-Man and because his company and his character is so integral in the series, especially with the other villains, it will be interesting to see how long he will stick around.

Overall, a fun and enjoyable series thus far. For those who are budget conscious, waiting for a full season may be of your best interested. I wished there was some sort of special feature included on the DVD but overall, an animated series that both young and old can enjoy. Check it out!

Well its been a while since anyone put anything in the commentary, but enough of that lets talk Getter Robo. Is it good and worth buying the whole set, you wonder, or is just another robot anime that just cant cut the cake with what the fans want? Another thing why is it so freaken cheap? I am happy to say that it is awesome, the first three episodes alone get you into the action. The story may not make since then, but it will unravel over time. To be honest you should not pay to much attention to the storyline, and just let the whole thing flow for you. This kind of robot anime aint for the story driven kind of people anyway. Great action and it actually makes me want to look into the earlier series that are out there even if they may not be as action packed as this. Very brief nudity, not to much to make you cover your eyes or something and very gore, not for the kiddies. Why its cheap to buy, dont know dont care worth every penny and more. Other robot animes to look out for like this are Godannar and how could I forget Mazinkaiser.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Getter Robo Armageddon - Power Pack! Click Here

Before purchasing this power pack I was a Getter Robo virgin, I had never seen an episode. I had only seen the ADV preview, and read the reviews found on Amazon. I was willing and able, it was time for some Getter action!

Day 1: My Power Pack arrived in the mail and I watched the first episode, I was confused and felt like I was missing a huge plotline.

Day 2: Episode 2 was exciting and I liked the animation, but I still felt lost in plot details missing from the previous series.

Day 3: All notions of loss of plot went out of the window, as I watched the remaining 11 episodes back-to-back. Plot lines began to be explained. They began yelling “GO GETTER TOMMAHAWK!” and other weapons of their choice. The excitement levels grew. By the final disc of 3 episodes I was yelling “GO GETTER RAY!” with them.

It is not the most menatlly demanding anime, but is very visually intense. I was very impressed by my Getter Robo experience, and would recommend this to mecha fans. Be warned there is a lot of violence, although of the monster/fantasy variety, lots of chopping up, exploding heads etc.. It has a suggested rating of 15+ so be careful of young kids watching this. For those who crave action which never lets up this is for you!

Hammer Studios is known for its particular brand of horror films, but in the early sixties they also ventured into the realm of adventure. Four of those titles are included here. PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER is a swashbuckling potboiler, with Christopher Lee as a one-eyed pirate, and Sinbad’s Kerwin Matthews as the persecuted hero who saves the town that rejected him from treasure seeking mauraders.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Icons of Adventure Collection! Click Here

DEVIL-SHIPS PIRATES has a clever premise, a Spanish privateer that sailed with the Armada runs ashore near a small and remote British town and terrorizes the populace, tricking the hapless villagers into believing (at least for a while) that the Armada defeated the British navy and the rest of England is now occupied by the victorious Spaniards. This clever IT HAPPENED HERE touch from screenwriter Jimmy Sangster makes DEVIL-SHIP special, as does Christopher Lee’s performance as the absolute nastiest villian he’s ever played in his long and distinguished career.

Two dark masterpieces are on the second disk. THE TERROR OF THE TONGS, with Christopher Lee as the evil head of the Red Dragon Tongs, is set in nineteenth century Hong Kong. When the Red Dragons murder a British sea captain’s teenaged daughter, they unleash a reckoning they never imagined.

The second film on disk two is STRANGLERS OF BOMBAY, the “true” story of the Kali Cult in India. This film is the only black and white entry in this set and it stars no major Hammer actors, yet you’ll be rivited by a suspenseful story that really draws you in. Though this was made decades ago, be warned, STRANGLERS is not for the faint of heart. This story was “remade” in the 1980s with James Ivory behind the camera and Pierce Brosnan in front of it, titled THE DECEIVERS.

Jimmy Sangster, Hammer’s premier screenwriter, offers commentary, along with a Hammer film historian. Trailers are included, along with some wacky supplemental material. The widescreen transfers are excellent on all four films. Kuddos to Sony Home Video for this release. Now, guys, when are you going to release THE GORGON on DVD?

Any fan of Hammer films and/or Christopher Lee cannot wait to snatch up this rare item. Be aware casual Hammer Film fans these are not Horror films but action/adventure. Many familiar Hammer actors and directors. So if you are a completist of the Golden Age of Hammer like myself, snatch up this DVD collection.

Those who were hoping that perhaps the release of “Blue’s Clues” box-sets might bring new special features, such as commentary or behind-the-scenes documentaries, are going to be disappointed. If you’ve been keeping up on your “Blue’s Clues” DVD releases, then there is nothing here you haven’t already seen. ABC’s 123’s and More Collection is nothing more than a repackaging of three previous DVDs: Blue Takes You to School, Shapes and Colors, and Blue’s Big Band. If you don’t have those, or haven’t seen them before, this box-set might be worth checking out, since you get a lower price than you would purchasing all three separately. Otherwise, I recommend passing on this box-set.

I would have to say I bought this Collection thinking that it had Steve Burns on the DVD’s how very disappointing to get it and find out that Joe is on it instead. My daughter will not watch Joe for anything. They need to get more DVD’s with Steve on them. There great video’s if your kids like Joe but if not don’t waste the money.

This is an excellent movie. So it’s not traditional Bond, and it’s certainly not the heaviest in the series. Actually, it seems to lack depth in some places, it’s kind of long, and the plot seems to really deviate about 90 minutes into the movie. But if you’re looking for a fun, not-so-involving movie, this is it.

This one has an altogether different flavor than the others in the series, probably because it’s set mostly in America (and 70’s Harlem at that!). I’d like to see 007 make a return to the U.S.

Roger Moore, in his first turn as 007, gives a very offhanded, lightweight, amusing performance. Yaphet Kotto does the best he can with the writing Mr. Big was given, and Jane Seymour (her first film) is very good as Solitaire. Julius W. Harris made a formidable Tee-Hee, the henchman with a mechanical arm and a hook for a hand. And I am still not sure of Baron Samedi’s importance to the story, but Geoffrey Holder was very memorable in the role.

This is far and away the funniest Bond I’ve ever seen. The laughs start kind of slow, then they keep coming. First of all, to see James Bond, crisp, white, British secret agent, in 1973 Harlem is a blast in itself. He looks so out of place, it’s actually funny! I think that was meant to look that way, though. Moore did a good job at playing a Bond who was trying not to look like he felt out of place, but nevertheless obviously was. Check out the first taxi scene and the following scene where he enters the Fillet of Soul–this defines the whole fish-out-of-water thing. Inside the restaurant, Bond talks to his waiter at his table, and as he asks him for information, the wall revolves with Bond still at the table! Watch how Moore tries in vain to get up from his seat, and how the waiter, unfazed, spins on his heel and walks away drinking Bonds drink. If you don’t laugh at that, you don’t know humor!

Then, a little over halfway through, there’s a big detour in the film itself. Bond is in New Orleans with Solitaire, and one thing leads to another and there’s a big chase scene with 007 driving a double-decker bus. Somewhere after that long comic chase, portly, balding, tobacco-chewing (and -spitting), profanizing, pants-hiking, hillbilly redneck Sherriff J.W. Pepper enters the picture. Clifton James gives a hilariously classic performance as the uber-stereotype, and the time he spends onscreen (although irrelevant to the plot) is among the film’s best. From the moment he strides up to the speeding Harlemite’s car, cocks his hat, hikes up his pants, and says that no one pulls one over on Sherriff J.W. Pepper, you’ll be rolling in the aisles, trust me! What follows is another wild (and even longer) demolition chase scene with Bond in a speedboat that is humorous as well.

After it’s felt like two hours, then there is some action with Bond and Solitaire over a shark tank, with Mr. Big laughing at their plight. I thought it would have been more fitting to use the crocodiles that were already in the movie instead of bringing in a new animal, personally. (Although it is interesting to note that 007 helper Felix Leiter, who appears here, was eaten by a shark–partially, anyway–in his only other appearance in “Licence to Kill.”)

I know I haven’t seemed very kind in my review, and acknowledge that it has many plot holes and things. But it is a very good movie, and very fun. Just don’t go looking for this one if you want the Bond that everyone knows.

In 1973 Roger Moore made a smooth transition from his most famous role - that of Simon Templar - to yet another literary character who had been made famous by another actor. Whereas the Saint had been immortalized by George Sanders in a series of movies much earlier (allowing Moore to make it his own in the highly successful television series), the memory of Sean Connery as James Bond was much more recent in the publics mind so Moore had his work cut out for him.

It is hardly surprising then that “Live and Let Die” plays it relatively safe. Moore went on record as saying that he read one line detailing how Bond had to kill once, but didn’t very much like it (from the novel “Goldfinger”), and took his portrayal from that. In fact in his first couple of movies Moore plays the character much closer to his television Simon Templar persona than later in the series (the producers subsequently felt it was too close to Connery’s interpretation of the role). This is a sad development as Moore never really had the chance to show he could play both charming and ruthless as he had plenty of chances to portray on The Saint.

Taking one of Fleming’s most controversial novels (the villains are all black) the producers were faced with a vexing problem. They overcame this by not only giving Bond a black ally, but also allowing the villains to get the better of 007 on several occasions. They also threw in a redneck sheriff as comic relief for good measure.

The movie is essentially one long chase and in a definite break with tradition we are offered up a pretitles sequence in which James Bond does not appear. In the opening we see two British agents killed by ingenious means - first a man is killed at the United Nations through use of what can only be assumed a sound weapon and a second by snakebite on the Caribbean island of San Monique. James Bond (in only the second and last time we see a glimpse of his London apartment) is assigned by M to investigate.

What follows is a chase as Bond pursues the Prime Minister of San Monique Dr. Kananga and an underworld gang leader named Mr. Big across the United States to a fiery, explosive (literally) climax in the Caribbean. On the way our interepid hero must escape from all manner of tricky situations, such as being stranded on a tiny island surrounded by crocodiles. The action highlight is most probably a boat chase half way through the movie that has probably only been bested by an even better boat chase sequence in “Puppet on a Chain.”

This movie does seem to have trouble deciding if it wants to be humorous or serious and I liked the introduction of the voodoo element that makes this a very unique 007 picture.

Truth be told, the initial Bond movie by Roger Moore is a mixed bag in my book. Whereas the supporting villains are excellent, the main villain is underwhelming and his plot (flooding the US with drugs) is rather ho-hum compared to bigger plots like destruction of the world (Moonraker) or the nuclear attack of British cities (For Your Eyes Only).

Roger Moore is also still finding his way in the part and apart from a few glimmers of what he would eventually deliver, the movie and his performance seems to be on remote control.

The DVD is one of the refurbished releases of late 1999. Previously the Bond movies had been released by MGM in the accursed snapper cases with few special features. MGM corrected this oversight throughout 1999 and 2000 releasing special editions of the movies in a series of three waves.

“Live and Let Die” was one of the seven movies released in the Oct. 19, 1999 wave (the first). For this reason its format is slightly different from releases in subsequent releases with this one serving up two audio commentaries and one documentary on the making of the movie.

It is in the commentaries were the real joy of this DVD lies. We are treated to a scene specific commentary from writer Tom Manckiewicz. The fact that he is sitting in the studio watching the movie with us is very obvious - he even noticeably yawns during the opening credits (hold in there Tom there’s another couple of hours to go). His commentary is informative and very enjoyable. There is also a commentary by Guy Hamilton which is also entertaining. Aside from this the special features are very recognizable to collectors of these DVDs with trailers and tv spots and a still gallery with over 150 images. There is of course the requisite “Making of” documentary and a very short “On the set with Roger Moore” featurette that will prove interesting to Bond fans. Perhaps most curious of all is a UK Milk Board commercial that was released to tie in with the new James Bond movie. One special feature also here (and one I really miss on MGM releases these days) is a very handsome collectible booklet with trivia and notes on the production.

UPDATE- It should be noted that there is a rerelease of this movie coming up on DVD which will feature a newly recorded scene specific audio commentary by Bond actor Roger Moore. So, it may well be worth holding off on a purchase until these Ultimate Editions are released towards the end of 2006.
