Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R13CS6IG6RA47F I saw this during its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival - and was lucky enough to urge into the director, Scott Sanders and the incredibly talented composer and editor Adrian Younge in line at another screening. This video combines moments from the trailer with bits from my conversation with the filmmakers - all captured on a handy Flip Mino Camcorder.

Back in the day, films like Shaft, Foxy Brown and Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song styled funkalicious jazzy soundtracks, tough dusky heroes and heroines and putrid white cops and politicians. A current genre was born, both celebrating and exploiting shadowy culture, targeting urban African-American audiences with its style and subject matter. Some of the best of these films have become cult favorites, and have influenced novel filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, whose Jackie Brown paid explicit homage to the genre he’d grown up on and loved. Shaft was recently remade in slick Hollywood style by John Singleton; but for the fresh gross budget style and campy flair you had to go to the bargain bin dvd versions, until now.

Created by Scott Sanders and Michael Jai White, Unlit Dynamite tells the anecdote of a first-rate brother, who’s got kung fu skills and knows honest how to please the ladies. What he can’t do is what he promised his mother on her death bed: protect his brother from the drug lords that are destroying the inner city. Upon hearing that his brother was killed, he swears revenge and sets out on a quest to glimpse those responsible. It turns out this was no simple hit - his brother’s assassination was piece of a tall conspiracy to disempower blacks by hitting them where it hurts the worst, and the conspiracy goes all the method to the top: President Richard Nixon himself, who, it turns out, has some sweet kung fu moves all his bear.

The film is hilarious, taking all of the absurd, campy, raunchy and frosty elements of customary 70’s blaxploitation films like Superfly and Dolemite, and tying them together into an absurdly comic anecdote revenge and save-the-world flick.

Part of the appeal is that the film mimics the on-the-fly imperfection of the traditional B-movie style Blaxploitation. Recount mikes occasionally appear in the shot, distracting the actor; sure continuity problems (a woman whose spin of sadness appears and then disappears and reappears as the camera cuts assist and forth between her and the vast BD; an actor is suddenly replaced by a stand-in mid-scuffle, after he is obviously injured by a punch) add to the overall lightheartedness of the endeavor.

What impressed me, though, was that the film was not mocking blaxploitation, but rather paying homage. The filmmakers clearly know and admire these films. Best of all, though, is Michael Jai White’s absolute immersion in character as a tough-as-nails crusader whose soft heart and shrinking demeanor only occasionally surfaces. I haven’t laughed out loud this remarkable during a film in a very long time. Highly recommended, but not for the petrified.

“Shaded Dynamite,” starring actor, martial artist, and obsolete stuntman Michael Jai White, is a riproaring but affectionate sendup of “blaxploitation” films, action films with dismal stars that started with “Shaft” in 1971 starring Richard Roundtree, and grew to be the greatest burst of sunless participation in Hollywood history. Shaded actors, writers, and directors worked as never before, and created films that drew massive dusky audiences. These films created heroes out of private eyes, pimps, Vietnam veterans, drug dealers, hustlers, and gloomy revolutionaries. These films were cheaply made, and were often derided by film critics and scholars, but unlit audiences saw a Hollywood fantasy straggle do on character types they knew, frustration they had being voiced, and perhaps most importantly, sad people fighting and beating the system.

The place involves White as Sunless Dynamite, a neighborhood enforcer whose brother gets killed by a unsavory alliance between drug dealers and the mob. Murky Dynamite begins a rampage of vengeance, beating up the unpleasant guys, and loving and charming women as he goes. The movie uses both expansive and subtle humor to point out the silliness inherent in these films, but it is all done with worship and affection.

Black Dynamite is a very humorous film that harkens succor to another spot and time - when there wasn’t mammoth blockbusters starring Will Smith and Jamie Foxx, and when the best entertainment in town was a film showing dim people “sticking it to the man.”

CRYING FREEMAN: PORTRAIT OF A KILLER (1988) is the first of six Japanese anime volumes based on the manga (funny book) by Kazuo Koike and Ryoichi Ikegami about a heavenly young sculptor who is forcibly recruited by the 108 Dragons, an feeble organization of Chinese assassins. We look him trained as an assassin and programmed to raze on their orders. His uncontrolled stream of tears after each killing and his yearning to be free give him the name, Crying Freeman.

Things find complicated when Freeman is forced to undertake the elimination of a view to one of his killings. She is a glorious, lonely, single Japanese woman and, like Freeman, an accomplished artist. They seek each other as soul mates and he risks his lifeand hersto convince the organization of her value to him.

This 52-minute keen production is almost a perfect adaptation of the manga anecdote and stands out as the best of the CRYING FREEMAN gripping series. The dramatic mood and visual elegance of the black-and-white drawings are surprisingly well-captured by the anime, despite the intellectual colors and lighting. Daisuke Nishio, the anime director, knows how to spin a scene and put the marvelous sense of time and status. It helps that Ikegamis drawings and his sense of cutting and composition are so astutely cinematic in the first site.

The Crying Freeman manga is significant for its high doses of nudity, near-pornographic sex and extremely bloody violence. The anime doesnt stint on these elements either, although it takes enormous difficulty to quit within R-rated limits. However, the sheer beauty of their presentation here may regain over otherwise hesitant viewers, while fully satisfying the already jaded fans of more hard-edged anime.

The “Crying Freeman” manga has also been adapted, considerably less faithfully, into two live-action films, CRYING FREEMAN (France, 1995), directed by Christophe Gans (BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF) and starring Brand Dacascos, and KILLERS ROMANCE (Hong Kong, 1990), starring Simon Yam and Joey Wang.

This is the LIVE ACTION VERSION of the Crying Freeman anime. This is a truly well done masterpeice of a film. Price Dacasca’s potrayed The Freeman perfectly. This by far one of the best if not the best live action adaption of an anime film. But seriously folks, No film is worth 99 dollars. I don’t care if it is the film to slay all films. They will sooner or later set this on DVD for 20 dollars.

Of the three newest Walt Disney Treasures DVD packages, this is perhaps the lesser known, but it is by no means the least vital. It’s what extinct to be known as “rip-roaring” colossal adventure, produced on a rich, immense scale unheard-of during the period in which it first appeared.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh! Click Here

“Dr. Syn,” which was based on British novels and legends explained on a intelligent documentary also included on disc one, is a Robin Hood or Zorro of sorts. But the incompatibility is that Dr. Syn is a highly respected minister who completely fools the pompous dreadful guys. Yet, in this three-part series, the villains are fleshed out and not caricatured. The dignity and seriousness of the drama holds up beautifully today without the slightest sense of cliché.

In this 2-disc region, you rep all three Incredible WORLD OF COLOR hours with introductions by Walt himself, plus the edited feature-length version released theatrically in Europe in the 60’s and then in the U.S. in the 1970’s. But the aspect ratio of the novel print has been restored for this release so you’ll even explore the television versions in more depth than before, with dazzling restored prints and sound that especially brings out the lush musical glean (I wish it was on a separate track!)

And speaking of music, you’ll derive to gawk who sings the haunting “Scarecrow” theme–Terry Gilkyson, who also wrote “The Bare Necessities,” along with George Patterson and The Wellingtons. The only detail left out is that The Wellingtons are best known for singing the Gilligan’s Island theme in its first season (there’s more about them in “Mouse Tracks”) .

The other mini-documentary traces Walt Disney’s long and fruitful live-action movie enterprises in the United Kingdom with comments by several of those fervent including director Ken Annakin. It’s tall that the live-action allotment of Walt Disney’s art is getting recognized and appreciated.

Most of all, if you are a fan of the TV classics The Prisoner or Secret Agent, you have to have this because Patrick McGoohan is in top effect in this film, even to his remarkably varied speaking yelp which transforms his character as worthy as his cover.

This Disney classic was based on the modern “Doctor Syn: A Anecdote of the Romney Marsh” written by Russell Thorndike and premiered on the TV Display World of Disney in 1963. This three piece series was later edited as a movie and released theatrically six years later. Both the novel three portion series as well as the theatrical movie are included here.

Essentially an updated Robin Hood style anecdote dwelling in the 1700s it’s a colossal family movie. While it is a bit dated now compared to other swashbuckling summer blockbusters (after all, it was made for TV originally) it offers a simple accurate account and expedient acting, especially by Patrick McGoohan, who plays the title role.

I loved this demonstrate as a kid, and it’s well worth revisiting, young and ragged.

My kids didn’t know I was getting them this movie called “Gooby” because I was keeping it a real secret from them. Lucky for me, a few days after the movie’s official release, K-Mart already had the DVD in the $2.99 n’ Under Bargain Area, so I snatched it up and wrapped it up and waited for a special day to reveal the DVD to my children. I wished it was on VHS because we only have a VCR and I have to borrow a DVD player from a neighbor whenever we rent or buy DVD’s, but I figured this was a special occasion so “why the heck not?”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gooby! Click Here

So just when the time was right (on the anniversary of a family member’s death), I made a big deal and unwrapped the “Gooby” DVD in front of my children. Their first reactions were things like, “What is that bear on there?” and “Do we have to watch this now?” My kids had no idea what they were in for (obviously!), but I had a hunch we were all in for a treat.

So I sat them down, figured out the DVD thing, and started the movie. An hour later, I found myself enjoying the movie so much, I didn’t notice that one of my kids had fallen asleep, another was reading comic books, and my other one had left the house (apparently).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gooby! Click Here

Whatever.

So I rounded them up again and started the movie over (even though I really wanted to know how it ended) and I made them watch the movie front to back, beginning to finish, like my dad taught me how to watch movies a long time ago (before he died).

Which brings me to another good point of this movie and that is fathers. Gooby learns that having a dad and being a dad are sometimes different things and he tries to teach the child in the movie that, too. I think that was a nice thing for the writers to write into the movie. Things like that are cool for people of any age to know!

Now, I may be a father of 3 teenage boys and girls, but I think I know a good family movie when I see one and this is it! I am a “Gooby” fan for life and I promise to make sure my family watches this movie every holiday so we can keep remembering Gooby’s lessons about love, family, and relationships.

I have only one question/regret and that is how the movie ends, with Gooby getting back into his spaceship and saying that he is going to find E.T. and Alf to start a band. I think that was a silly part that might be confusing for children who might not know who those other alien beings are. So I hope in the sequel “Gooby 2,” they choose to go in a different direction with the story. Also, I think some of the deaths in the movie were handled strangely and more attention needs to be paid to that detail in future versions of this movie.

Thanks. Brock.

It’s a wonderful family film depicting the insecurities of a child made worse by new, unfamiliar surroundings and how a make-believe friend helps him grow up and gain confidence. Also, portrays busy professinal parents who love their child, but miss the most important element in their family - giving of themselves and time spent together rather than material possessions.

Turn on your TV. Watch the same formulaic comedies day after day on the networks. Watch your intelligence quotient begin its downward spiral. Scared? Ok, now turn on Scrubs. Every so often a show comes along that breaks the network formula, and brings a richness to a genre that is sorely lacking in originality. Scrubs is that show, and has been for several years running.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Scrubs - The Complete Second Season! Click Here

Scrubs hooked me with the very first episode I ever saw. At first I was skeptical. Medical comedy, hmm Ok, there is going to be bad sophmoric humor and haven’t we seen medical shows about a million times? Five minutes in, it hit me. This show was actually brilliant; Intelligent, quirky, and sometimes wacky humor coupled with real drama and tearful emotion and writing that continues to amaze week after week. At that moment, Scrubs inherited the void left by Seinfeld’s departure as TVs best comedy.

The quirky nature of the writing, especially JD’s fantasy sequences, improves in Season 2. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are far better, and far more comfortable, in their respective roles as JD, Turk, and Elliot than in Season 1. John C. McGinley is bar none the best actor on TV today as Dr. Cox. He becomes a more understandable and likeable character as this season progresses. And of course, Neil Flynn and his fantastically offbeat humor as JD’s Janitor nemesis.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Scrubs - The Complete Second Season! Click Here

The season 1 finale left a lot of questions in the air. Would Carla and Turk resolve their problems and find happiness? Would JD and Elliot fall in love for real or are they destined for friendship? Most importantly, woud the father-son relationship between JD and Dr. Cox ever be the same? Season 2 resolves these questions fairly early, leaving the majority of the season devoted to pure laugh out loud moments and amazing guest stars like Heather Locklear, Tom Cavanaugh, Rick Shroeder, Jay Mohr, and the gorgeous Amy Smart as Tasty Coma Wife. The show seems to be successfully moving away from the gimmicky plot twists and each episode is a neatly comprehensive show. With shorter dramatic arcs, the humor and acting are center stage and the cast and crew sparkle. This set is a solid winner, with plenty of entertaining extras, and is an absolute must have for any Scrubs or TV comedy fan.

Scrubs season two came out on DVD where I live yesterday (Australia) and I have to say that the quality of this box set actually managaes to surpass that of season one. Once again, the special features are entertaining and informative without being too lengthy (perfect for my short attention span). The best short doco is one which features many of the on-set jokes between cast and crew - you really get the feeling that these people don’t just turn up and make a sitcom for the money.

While it’s disappointing that there are only 22 episodes in season two, as opposed to the 24 from the first season, what is lost in quality is made up for in quantity. Once again we see the janitor (my absolute favourite character) do his best to make JD’s life hell, while getting choked up when JD gives him a new mop (of all things!). Music also features heavily in these episodes, with the return of ‘Ted’s Band’ seeing a fantastic rendition of the theme song from ‘Charles in Charge’. Check out the extras to see these guys do their own special cover of the Scrubs theme song.

Even the menus are exciting - containing the entire Scrubs theme song, which is seriously catchy (sings) …but I know, I’m no Superman… (all right I’ll stop now). In the episodes themselves, the picture is very clear and the sound is great too, and excellent transfer from the source material. Considering the terrible pattern in which these shows screened in Australia, it’s nice to be able to watch them in order as intended. All in all, this is a fantastic set at a great price - where I’m from it’s about half the cost of (for example) Simpsons and Frasier box sets. And because Scrubs is just one of those shows you can watch over and over again, it’s well worth every cent.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey is a beautiful rendition which stays true to the spirit and story of the book — which doesn’t always happen when stories are translated from one medium to another. There are a few slight differences which do not detract from the story in any way:

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey! Click Here

— in the book, the creche belonged to the widow, and had been carved by her grandfather.

— in the movie, it was given to Thomas by his father, who dies in the war.

Another difference is in the book, we never learn how the widow “got” that way, in the movie there is some backstory development showing the father in uniform heading off to war, etc.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey! Click Here

What is the same is that its a story of kindness, love and miracles. Time spent with either version of this story will be time well spent.

Whereas I might not use this term so often to refer to a movie I will now in writing that this Christmas film is warm, actually in many ways: The musical score has a fullness and soul that immediately welcomes you into the story; the colors and set designs are literally “earthy” and gorgeous as the mother and boy take many walks through the forest to arrive at Mr. Toomey’s home; the importance of silence (as Mr. Toomey advocates often to the boy) allows the viewer to think and feel to greater depths than your average splice and cut/edited movie.

The acting was solid, especially behind Tom Berenger in an anticipated role departure from the likes of “Platoon” or “Sniper”. He plays the grieving, not-quite-living recluse of the film’s title…and to see him slowly come out of his shell behind the gentle presence and love of the mother and son is very touching, to say the least. And this brings me to my one critique of the film: the final opening up of Mr. Toomey was so dramatically quick (even the back of the DVD case shows Mr. Toomey singing in church next to the mother and son…did I miss that? I don’t think so). It WOULD have been nice to see that scene as part of the re-awakening of Mr. Toomey; why wasn’t that in the picture? My point is that the film beautifully depicts the depressed woodworker slowly but surely rising out of his soulful cave only to kind of burst out at the end…suddenly he’s coming out of church and the mother suddenly sees him?? A suggestion: Why not have a quick clip of him perhaps shyly entering the worship service and people being surprised and warmly accepting him there? Why not a little more transition to fill out the viewing experience “with” the characters in the story? The magic of the previous 1 hour and 20 minutes came up too quick and short. To that end I was disappointed and left wanting….to be even more touched by Mr. Toomey’s transformation. Alas, that did not ruin the film.

No one told me of this film, I just happened upon it while I was cruising through Amazon. What a good, good find. A probable annual Christmas tradition of viewing for years to come. Highly Recommended.

Ever since I was a child, this magical Disney classic has always captured my imagination. The fabulous songs by the Sherman brothers, the amazing mixture of live-action and animation, and the magical special effects make this timeless film entertaining to viewers of all ages. The casting was great, especially David Tomlinson, who was also terrific in “Mary Poppins” and “The Love Bug”. My two favorite scenes in this are the hilarious soccar match and the “battle” at the end between the knights and the German soldiers. By the way, the scene where the “flying” dress lands on Roddy McDowall is the only scene (that I know of) where you can clearly see the wires attached to a flying object or person in the movie. This is easily one of Angela Lansbury’s best performances, and it’s one of the best films directed by the great Robert Stevenson (Disney’s greatest director ever in my humble opinion). I was a little disappointed by the “special edition” dvd. It claims to have a featurette on the making of the film, but the featurette focuses only on the film’s music. I was hoping for a documentary explaining the actual making of the film, especially the extraordinary special effects. At least the movie has been wonderfully restored and is very well-priced. This great film is highly recommended for Disney fans.

In 1971, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, a film many call a Mary Poppins rip-off, premiered at Radio City Music Hall, but in a version in which nearly half an hour of footage, including full songs, was removed. For its 25th Anniversary in 1996, Disney re-inserted all of the deleted footage except for one musical number in which the picture was lost. The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences screened this in 1996, but it didn’t get a theatrical release, and for years, the only way Americans could get it was either by the 1997 laserdisc release, an import of a European video, or by catching it on occasion on the Disney Channel.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bedknobs and Broomsticks! Click Here

Finally, in 2001, for the film’s 30th Anniversary, Disney released a DVD with this extended version of the film. Restored and remastered, the film now has a clearer plot, extended musical numbers, and songs previously deleted. The brilliant “Portobello Road” number is now restored to its original running time, as well as Miss Price’s response verses, titled “Don’t Let Me Down” during Mr. Browne’s song “Eglantine,” and the previously entirely deleted songs “With A Flair” and “Nobody’s Problems” are restored to the film.

The DVD is a mixed bag. The transfer is quite nice, but Lowry Digital, who did the recent Mary Poppins, Bambi, and Cinderella DVD restorations, could punch it up a little, as on occasion, I saw a bit of grain, and the occasional film artifact, especially during the closing credits and Walt Disney Pictures logo. However, this film has still never looked better on home video, so it’s fine with me.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bedknobs and Broomsticks! Click Here

The extras could have been better. An actual making-of on the film would have been nice, including footage used in the Music Magic featurette. While that featurette does give some nice insight on the restoration, there’s nothing behind-the-scenes about it except for the creation of the music score. Nothing about the effects, actors, nothing. But it’s worth a look for info on the film’s 1996 restoration. A larger gallery would have been nice. I do like the inclusion of the two cartoons. And of course, I’m happy to see that they have included theatrical trailers.

The best supplement, however, is the deleted song A Step In The Right Direction. That song was the catalyst that jump started this restoration project to begin with, so there’s a bit of irony here in the fact that they couldn’t find the footage of the song. So the supplement on the DVD, which is ported over from the 1997 laserdisc and was shown after the movie when the Disney Channel aired the restored version, is reconstructed using still photos of the scene and the original soundtrack. Hopefully one day, the footage will be found and they will be able to reinstate the number into the film, or at least they’ll decide to include the photo reconstruction a la the restored version of A Star Is Born with Judy Garland.

Some have complained that there isn’t an option to watch the original, shorter version due to its length and/or the poor dubbing of the voices in deleted scenes. (For much of the non-musical deleted footage, original dialogue soundtracks could not be found, so many of the deleted scenes had to be re-dubbed.) While I prefer the restored version despite the dubbing flaws, I think it would be wise of Disney to release both versions on DVD. Next year is the 35th Anniversary - maybe Disney will make a 2-disc DVD featuring both editions, with bonuses spread out on each disc, to appease all fans. Or better yet, a 3-Disc Collector’s Edition, with discs 1 and 2 containing both cuts of the film and disc 3 with all the supplements. While neither edition is likely, the 2-Disc is a more likely option.

In conclusion, I can heartily recommend this DVD. The film has been lovingly restored and remastered, featuring almost all of the footage left on the cutting room floor in 1971, and features a nice handful of bonuses.

PBS viewers will recognize this offering. Ferguson is charming and persuasive. He makes the story something that even my twelve-year old can understand, without “talking down”. He covers the full range of financial dealings around the globe, from Wall Street to microfinance. His case study of Argentina makes a difficult story relatively simple yet not simplistic. He positively critiques Hernando de Soto’s approach ot providing title to land to the poor as a means of securing collateral-based loans and shows where small, uncollaterized loans can work even more effectively.

Great as a serious academic yet never boring treatment of “high” and “low” finance. Should be required for most college majors.

The many facets of this documentary weave together a coherent and powerful sense of vital information affecting the present and the future. Whether or not you are deeply involved with studying economic theory, public policy, history, or the future, many key features of these things permeate your life, and this DVD can entertainingly provide a mixture of insights, illustrations, and warnings to consider. Facts play a much larger role than speculation in this documentary, though the speculations seem plausible and add to the value of the overall effect. Scholars may find it productive to ask themselves how much they agree or disagree with the speculations and why… then in future decades revisit the video to compare these details with how things actually unfolded. This DVD’s use of moving images that metaphorically relate to narration is often profoundly engaging, too.

“Desperate Housewives” is an absolute phenomenon! I remember I saw an advert on Channel 4 over here in England advertising this new show and just from the advert I knew I’d love it. So did 5 million other Brits who tuned in when the first episode premiered on January 5th 2005. Since that first episode the nation has been hooked. This is easily the most popular US-import show in the country and literally everyone at my college talks about it on a Thursday morning after the previous night’s episode. I must confess, I watch it religiously on my own in our conservatory every Wednesday night and if anyone dare disturb me I will be seriously p***ed off!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season! Click Here

In a world saturated with reality TV and bad talk shows, Desperate Housewives is a breath of fresh air. Creator Marc Cherry is a Godsend to women all over the world, and it was clear from the beginning that this show was going to become totally global. I mean I’ve heard stories about this show getting upwards of 30 million viewers in America! That’s absolutely incredible, and this DVD will sell millions upon its release, trust me.

So what makes Desperate Housewives so addictive? For me, there are a number of things. Firstly, the cast is impeccable. The four main stars of the show are Teri Hatcher (who plays Susan Mayer), Marcia Cross (who plays Bree Van De Kamp), Felicity Huffman (who plays Lynette Scarvo) and the sensational Eva Longoria (who plays Gabrielle Solis). My personal favourite is Marcia Cross, because she is just so amazing. She is a gorgeous, fabulous gay icon and she is a true star! Her character is so particular. To begin with, we hate her, but over time she grows on you.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season! Click Here

Secondly, I would say the blend of genres make this show effortlessly appealing. The mix of comedy and drama is achieved within a degree of perfection, tossing the viewer from laugh-out-loud moments to those moments of tension. It is a credit to the writers that they have sustained this throughout the entire first season. If we are to look at other successful shows such as Buffy, The X-Files, Friends, Will & Grace and Sex And The City, the pinnacle of excellence usually peaks after the first season, so for Desperate Housewives to hit the mark straight away sets the bar very high. I’m confident that they can improve the formula in the second season.

The imagery of the first season is just beautiful, too. The white picket fences, show home houses and lush green lawns define the show, and Wisteria Lane in general. However, they also serve as a major juxtaposition to the sensational storylines that bubble away under the surface. The murders, the affairs, the breakdowns and the shameful secrets are what keep us hanging on like vultures indeed, desperate, for more. Speaking of the storylines, they may not be the most original or inventive, but its with the amazing cast of actors that these storylines become something on their own entirely. So much happens in one episode that you may totally forget about it in the next! There is a small army of co-stars who decorate the sidewalks of the show as the spotlight falls on our four main characters and the troubles that revolve around them.

The season’s main draw is the death of Mary Alice Young, and why she chose to kill herself with a revolver. This question is carried throughout the whole season, from the very first few minutes of the pilot episode where we see her kill herself. Details are gradually revealed throughout the season as the plot thickens. I’m not going to go into much detail about this storyline, or indeed the many others that make this season so jam-packed, because I’m sure you know it all yourself, but what I will say is that I love the way the characters are portrayed. There’s a sense of fantasy about the whole neighborhood, in that everyone is a nosey beggar and wants to know everyone else’s business. One such example is Mrs. Huber. The way death doesn’t seem to affect many of the show’s characters is also part of its appeal, as the show adopts an almost retro look at classic comedies with nifty stories and camp backdrops.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

After so many of my favourite TV shows ended in 2003 and 2004, I was looking for something new to watch, but I never thought I’d find something as brilliant as Desperate Housewives. I say find, when really I should say ‘realise’ because this show has hit like a tidal wave. I sure will be buying the first season on DVD when it is finally released over here in the UK, and I’m sure you need no motivation from me to buy it as well! This review merely serves as a culmination of TV’s biggest phenomenon. Here’s to many more great years to come!

“Desperate Housewives” is a witty and amusing look at the antics of four suburban women whose lives change dramatically after the suicide of a neighboring housewife. Much like “American Beauty” or “Six Feet Under”, the show mixes humor, drama, and satire to explore the underbelly of contemporary American society. While the performances of the main cast members are all good, my favorite is Marcia Cross, who brings a touch of the bizarre and mysterious to her character of perfectionist Bree Van De Camp. Cross creates one of the most memorable characters of recent TV. Fans of Ms. Cross should also check her out in LIVING IN FEAR (2001) and the hard-to-find FEMALE PERVERSIONS (1996), which is sort of a percursor to “Desperate Housewives” in its portrait of female angst and also the only film in which Cross (who has a small role as Tilda Swinton’s mom) appears topless.

1968’s PRETTY POISON starring Anthony “Psycho” Perkins and former teen tease Tuesday Weld is a much-wanted cult fave not on DVD in Region 1 (USA). With no fanfare, it’s now available as a Region 1 but without director Noel Black’s better than average commentary on the Region 2 import (Amazon UK).

Adapted by Lorenzo Semple, Jr., from Stephen Geller’s twisted love story “She Let Him Continue,” opens with Perkins’ Dennis Pitt being released from a psychiatric institution or prison for committing arson. The probation officer warns: “You’re going into a real, tough world. It’s no place for fantasies.” First thing Dennis sees when he settles in a small town is seductive, pouty Sue Ann Stepanek (Weld), a girl with serious attitude problems, in her majorette outfit. Uh oh.

This deliciously demented black comedy focuses on what happens when two pathologies collide. It’s a forerunner to movies like Bonnie and Clyde, Badlands and Blue Velvet.

Perkins and Weld have great chemistry as the two dodgy lovebirds. She merrily lets him pretend he’s a CIA agent but deviously manipulates his fantasies to her own ends.

Beverly Garland is Weld’s sexually charged, domineering mom. But it’s Perkins and Weld at their best that make this rare gem from the 60s worth finding. I liked director Noel Black’s forthright commentary on the Region 2 version (Amazon UK). Wonder why it’s missing on the US version?

Rated: R (Originally X in the UK). Genre: Crime Thriller/Romance. 1 Hour, 29 Minutes. Starring: Tuesday Weld, Anthony Perkins, Beverly Garland. Director: Noel Black

Two talented actors, Anthony Perkins and Tuesday Weld really make this movie shine. It’s a long-overdue release, and if you’ve never seen this under-rated and lesser-known gem, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Tuesday Weld smokes in this, playing a young girl whose initial, apparent innocence proves too much for Anthony Perkins who is perfect as a troubled young man who is caught in his own fantasy-world.

I’m so happy this has finally been released! I’ve enjoyed it in late-night airings for years on television.

Now if only “The Shuttered Room” will get released, I can die a happy man!
