Imagine living in a world where life is governed by intricate rituals; a world “balanced so precariously that its harmony [can] be shattered by a whisper” (Wharton); a world ruled by self-declared experts on form, propriety and family history - read: scandal -; where everything is labeled and yet, people are not; where in order not to disturb society’s smooth surface nothing is ever expressed or even thought of directly, and where communication occurs almost exclusively by way of symbols, which are unknown to the outsider and, like any secret code, by their very encryption guarantee his or her permanent exclusion.

Such, in faithful imitation of Victorian England, was the society of late 19th century upper class New York. Into this society returns, after having grown up and lived all her adult life in Europe, American-born Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), after leaving a cruel and uncaring husband. She already causes scandal by the mere manner of her return; but not knowing the secret rituals of the society she has entered, she quickly brings herself further into disrepute by receiving an unmarried man, by being seen in the company of a man only tolerated by virtue of his financial success and his marriage to the daughter of one of this society’s most respected families, by arriving late to a dinner in which she has expressly been included to rectify a prior general snub, by leaving a drawing room conversation to instead join a gentleman sitting by himself - and worst of all, by openly contemplating divorce, which will most certainly open up a whole Pandora’s box of “oddities” and “unpleasantness”: the strongest terms ever used to express moral disapproval in this particular social context. Soon Ellen, who hasn’t seen such facades even in her husband’s household, finds herself isolated and, wondering whether noone is ever interested in the truth, complains bitterly that “[t]he real loneliness here is living among all these kind people who only ask you to pretend.”

Ellen finds a kindred soul in attorney Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), her cousin May Welland’s (Winona Ryder’s) fiance, who secretly toys with a more liberal stance, while outwardly endorsing the value system of the society he lives in. Newland and Ellen fall in love - although not before he has advised her, on his employer’s and May and Ellen’s family’s mandate, not to pursue her plans of divorce. As a result, Ellen becomes unreachable to him, and he flees into accelerating his wedding plans with May, who before he met Ellen in his eyes stood for everything that was good and noble about their society, whereas now he begins to see her as a shell whose interior he is reluctant to explore for fear of finding merely a kind of serene emptiness there; a woman whose seemingly dull, passive innocence grinds down every bit of roughness he wants to maintain about himself and who, as he realizes even before marrying her, will likely bury him alive under his own future. Then his passion for Ellen is rekindled by a meeting a year and a half after his wedding, and an emotional conflict they could hardly bear when he was not yet married escalates even further. And only when it is too late for all three of them he finds out that his wife had far more insight (and almost ruthless cleverness) than he had ever credited her with.

Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize and the first work of fiction written by a woman to be awarded that distinction, “The Age of Innocence” is one of Edith Wharton’s most enduringly popular novels; the crown jewel among her subtly satirical descriptions of New York upper class society. Martin Scorsese reportedly lobbied hard to bring the novel to the screen under his direction; and what at first looks like an odd match for the director of “Goodfellas,” “Mean Streets” and “Taxi Driver” turns out to be a masterpiece of understanding of the intricate workings of this world; a visual feast splendidly realized by cinematographer Michael Ballhaus and production and costume designers Dante Ferretti and (Oscar-winning) Gabriella Pescucci; reminiscent of a period tableau, where a dinner table’s immaculate symmetry expresses society’s outwardly perfect facade, a person’s character is mirrored in the paintings they own, their house’s interior decoration, the way they dress and the flowers they receive, and where, like in the novel, the protagonists’ relationships are choreographed to coincide with the pivotal moments of the stage performances they attend, such as Charles Gounod’s opera “Faust” and Dion Boucicault’s play “The Shaughraun;” a rare feat of psychological insight into the novel’s every character, from the three flawlessly portrayed principals (of whom only Winona Ryder won a Golden Globe and a National Board of Review Award, although all three of them would have been equally deserving) to the just as critical supporting roles, played by an all-star cast including Miriam Margolyes, who earned a BAFTA Award for her portrayal of unconventional society matriarch (nay, dowager-empress) Mrs. Manson Mingott, Richard E. Grant (”form” expert Larry Lefferts), Alec McCowen (scandalmonger Sillerton Jackson), Stuart Wilson and Mary Beth Hurt (disreputable financier Julius Beaufort and his wife Regina), Geraldine Chaplin (May’s mother), Sian Phillips (Newland’s mother), Michael Gough and Alexis Smith (society doyens Henry and Louisa van der Luyden), Robert Sean Leonard (Newland and May’s son Ted), Jonathan Pryce (Olenski’s secretary Riviere) and Norman Lloyd (Newland’s senior law partner Letterblair).

Scorsese’s movie is sometimes criticized for its use of a narrator (Joanne Woodward). But Woodward’s voiceovers not only capture Wharton’s subtly ironic tone to absolute perfection; her narration also provides a gentle frame to a story which could easily become fractured otherwise; or in the alternative, would have to include countless scenes merely to establish a certain atmosphere and social context without significantly advancing the storyline. On the whole, this is an all-around exceptional production, remarkably faithful to the literary original, and absolutely on par with the best of Scorsese’s other works.

Martin Scorsese has made a reputation of conveying the essence of the human spirit through images of toughness and violence. On the surface, The Age of Innocence seems about as far removed from films like Raging Bull and Goodfellas as east is from west. But look a little closer and you’ll see that this is most definitely a Scorsese film. For it’s the characters, and rightly so, that have always been Scorsese’s “means to the end.” In this movie, it is the characters and the potent tension building among them that takes center stage. The Age of Innocence could be compared to a sumptuous and lavish banquet. Elmer Bernstein’s score is powerful and moves along in perfect counterpoint to cinematographer Michael Ballhaus’s visuals and their vivid colors–the crimsons and yellows of voluptuous roses, the flashes of red and white that mark transition scenes, the full-course gourmet meals. The costumes and set design are so perfect that it’s not hard to believe one has travelled back in time to nineteenth-century New York City. The Age of Innocence is an adaptation of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Edith Wharton. Set in New York City in the 1870s, America is, at that time, every bit as Victorian as England ever was and even a hint of immorality can bring ruin to a family. Enter Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer) who has lived most of her life in Europe and is now attempting to escape from a disatrous marriage. Her first meeting with Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is quiet and proper, yet smoulders with yet-to-be-spoken desires, for Archer is engaged to Ellen’s cousin, May (Winona Ryder). Archer’s dilemma forms the core of the film: Should he “do what’s right” and marry May, condeming himself to a life of boredom, or should he follow his passion and pursue the enigmatic Ellen, risking social and familial ruin? Day-Lewis and Pfeiffer are perfect in their roles and evoke understated, restrained passion to such a degree the audience accepts them immediately. Ryder’s May is also surprisingly good. As an actress known for her “over-the-top” portrayals, as May, Ryder is quiet and demure and flawless in every way. The Age of Innocence a beautiful cinematic experience. Those who missed seeing it in a theatre have missed something special, for a movie as lush as this one fails to translate well to the small screen. Still, The Age of Innocence offers us something that doesn’t happen very often and definitely should not be missed.

For those who owned the film on VHS - this is the original version with narration by David Attenborough and Cynthia Moss. The film is wonderfully filmed in Amboseli. Echo and Eli are of course in the centre most of the time, while some of the shots show Cynthia with Kili in the background. Very nicely done. The story is very moving and the narration by DA and CM is simply great. A real must for anybody in love with African wildlife and elephants in particular. Even better - go to Amboseli and do as Cynthia, park your 4WD in the middle of one of the herds in the swamps and turn off your engine and just sit on the roof and listen and look. Enjoy.

Exceptional

The BBC’s Natural Worlds trilogy of Echo and other Elephants is an amazing story (not yet finished) that will give everyone an insight to the world of this truly remarkable animal. Additional to Echo’s southern Kenya homerange of Amobseli you also learn about elephants in other parts of Africa such as Namibia and the forest elephants of the Congo. Once again no one does the wildlife documentaries quite like the BBC… A compelation to treasure,

This is a weird DVD to review.

I had never heard of “Yo Gabba Gabba” until one day, my wife calls me into the room because she saw this commercial with Jack Black on a kids’ show. Since both of us are Jack Black fans, and we have an 18 month old daughter who seemed interested in the commercial, I figured I would check it out on Amazon.

After reading the good reviews and cheap price of $11.99, I figured, “Why not?”

Well, after watching this DVD, I came up with the following conclusions:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Yo Gabba Gabba!: New Friends! Click Here

1) This is a bright, colorful, music-filled head-on assault on all visual and auditory senses…which is a VERY good thing for young kids.

2) The odd cast of characters teach a number of very valuable lessons for children (ie: don’t bite your friends, teamwork, like fish, etc.), in a fun, if sometimes strangely catching musical way.

3) Speaking of the music, songs range from pretty darn good, to catchy, to somewhat catchy, to grating on your last nerve. An impressive spectrum to say the least.

4) There are a wealth of very good celebrity guest appearances which will surprise most adults, as many of them are popular with grown-ups.

5) Here’s the important one…this show is almost guaranteed to be created by people who are stoned…constantly.

Now, if you like, strike that last comment (#5) if it offends you, as I don’t mean to offend anyone here…but if you watch the DVD, you will completely understand what I mean.

For instance, just watch the video where the Japanese rock band sings the very manic song where they continually count from 1 to 6.

A very odd and almost psychedelic experience to say the least (the whole show is actually psychedelic)…and really the one that least seems to be geared towards young kids.

Other than that, this DVD is a super value at $12, as you get quite a bit of playing time, and tons of entertainment.

Also, and this really is the most important thing…my daughter absolutely LOVES this show. When I put it on, she looks at me with a huge smile on her face, and claps her hands. Then, once it’s on, she stays glued to the TV until the very end.

That, my friends, is utterly PRICELESS.

Add to that the fact that even adults can have fun watching it with their kids, and you have a no-brainer of a buy.

5/5 stars for sure.

This episode is HYSTERICAL! We have it saved on our DVR and we watch it everyday! LOL! Jack Black is so funny. His freestyle dancing is hysterical. This is by far our favorite episode!

The latest installment of one of the best anime series in the past couple of years advances through its compelling story. The action is about to reach a fever pitch, and revelations will be discovered.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fullmetal Alchemist, Volume 5: The Cost of Living! Click Here

In Vol. 5, Ed and Alphonse Elric pay a visit to their old hometown for repairs after their first battle with Scar. The aptly named Major Armstrong, appointed to watch over the brothers, accompanies them home. After a rather unemotional reunion with their childhood friend Winry and her grandma and a visit to their mother’s grave, the Elrics get put back together again and head for Central to seek more information about creating a genuine Philosopher’s Stone. What they discover there may change their course of action and their whole motivation for creating it. Meanwhile, as Scar resumes his search for the Elrics, he encounters the Homunculi Lust and Gluttony and barely escapes with his life. The military is also looking for Scar to bring him to justice for the murders he’s committed.

During their detective work, Ed and Al come across a pair of assassins who seemingly have close ties to the brothers, and make a few new discoveries about themselves as they engage in fierce battle.

Confused yet? Well, if you’re here, I certainly hope you are at least familiar with the story leading up to this volume. “Fullmetal Alchemist” is well into its second season with this chapter (Episodes 17-20), and it is moving along at such an intriguing pace that I find myself marking Vol. 6’s release date on my calendar. This is one anime series that pulls no punches emotionally, and reaches its audience by one shocking plot device and/or twist after another. The series, set in an unrevealed time period but teeming with technology and magic (in this case, two great tastes that go great together), does a wonderful job of grabbing hold of the viewer and keeping them locked in to every detail, character, and story element. As the series progresses, you’ll actually identify with Edward and Alphonse and their terrible plight. You’ll watch them grow and mature, and even feel for them as they come closer and get further away from the goal of their quest with each episode. The entire supporting cast is chock full of memorable characters as well, especially the other State Alchemists (my personal fave being Alex Luis Armstrong at the moment). At certain times, mostly during the beginning of the series, slapstick elements and humor even inject themselves beautifully into the mix. At this point in the series, though, the story’s taken a very serious turn, although every once in a while a poke at Ed’s height (which happens at least once an episode) or Alchemist Hughes showing off pictures of his infant daughter breaks up the somberness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fullmetal Alchemist, Volume 5: The Cost of Living! Click Here

Talk about a series that’s got it all together. Whether you’re a fan of sci-fi or fantasy anime (or both), or you just want to watch a deep, intriguing story with incredible and memorable characters, this is the one. The dubbing, usually one of the most critiqued elements in anime, is absolutely excellent: Al’s and Ed’s English voices, especially, capture their every emotion with expert precision. I can’t imagine the difficulty in voice-acting a 10-year-old boy without a body whose soul is trapped in a case of armor, but darn it, it’s nailed here. Top it all off with a rawking opening theme from J-pop legends L’arc-en-Ciel (”Ready, Steady, Go”), and you’ve got a winner for the ages. The only minor aggravation I found with this volume, though, was in the way the DVD is set up: FUNimation forces you to watch a 2 ½ minute preview of the latest volume of (the albeit slick-looking) “Samurai 7″ and a small blurb for another series before the menu even comes up. (I’ve seen this on other discs before; don’t know if this is a flaw, but if every copy’s like that, it should be an extra on the disc rather than shoved down our collective throats at the beginning.) Do not miss this series; if you haven’t seen it up to now, back up and look for Vol. 1 this instant! You won’t regret it.

The previous volume of FMA left the Elric brothers in a less-than-hearty state, and had them journeying home to get some much needed rest and relaxations, as well as a replacement for Ed’s destroyed auto-mail arm. This volume picks up with the boys’ arrival in the tiny village they once called home. Accompanied by Armstrong, the brutishly gentle alchemist, the boys explore what they left behind. Later, with the repairs completed, the brothers continue their search for the work of Dr. Marcoh at Central’s library. Only what they find isn’t what they had hoped for, and Ed becomes more determined to seek out the Philosopher’s Stone, leading him to what appears to be a prison where only the most dangerous criminals are. Once here, the brother’s Elric face off against creatures very familiar, at least in concept, to Ed and Al.

Fullmetal Alchemist only continues to deepen, adding a few conflicts to the characters that make them more and more lovable, especially Alphonse, who faces a sad realization in this volume. Scar also has a few moments on this volume. But the greatest surprise in this volume is Armstrong. He had a small role in the previous volume, but he really becomes something special in this volume as Ed and Al’s protector while in their vulnerable state.

I’m now completely sure that FMA ranks high up there as one of anime’s greats, standing easily beside classics like Akira, Cowboy Bebop, and Neon Genesis Evangelion, all anime I hold in high regard. If you’re reading this you’ve probably already found some interest in FMA, so I probably don’t have to recommend this. But still, I have to, as FMA is quickly becoming something close to legendary in the anime world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tape on the old, traditional hulas of Hawaii. You won’t find the popular, swaying palm Waikiki-type hulas with grandmas strumming ukes, but the chanting/percussion hulas of antiquity. There are some good interview with kumu hula’s, or master teachers of hula, and the only drawback is that they are a bit competitive with one another. Everybody pushes their own hula school. But this is the real deal hula, a dying art, and it’s inspiring. About 20% of the tape is narration and kumu hulas being interviewed, and all the rest is the dancing.

This is a beautiful film that honors the Kumu Hula, the teachers of the ancient Hawaiian tradition of hula. Not the modern version of swinging hips and flowing hands, but an older ceremonial style that includes drumming and chant. The pace is slow but it helps to bring you into the mood of the work being done by these teachers and their students. As the case says (I own a copy): “This is Hawaiian culture as few outsiders have ever seen it: rich, expressive, colorful and totally unique.” Mahalo!

There have been criticisms here of Reinhardt’s AMND as “un-Shakespearean,” but truly: who among us would really want to sit in a theater with almost no props or backdrops, minimal costuming, men performing the women’s parts, and audiences that were anything but quiet during the show? -For that’s exactly what Shakespearean theater conditions amounted to. Our idea of Shakespeare derives simply from modern Masterpiece Theater style productions, which make a virtue of sober lucidity, and do a fine job of it, too.

But Reinhardt gives us a German High Romantic version of AMND, and displays a very different virtue, seldom seen in modern screen transcriptions of older works: a sense of well-conceived and executed style. You may not like his Mendelssohnian fairies, but their integration into the play–by choice of dialog, imaginative staging and costuming, brilliant special effects and incidental music–is consistent. Mendelssohn’s music was in fact intended to accompany actual performances many years previously; and the ballet sequences built around it have a way of stopping time even today with their visionary beauty, a matter of movement, staging, lighting (the remarkable Hal Mohr), editing and effects. A book in fact could be written on Reinhardt’s multi-level application of thematic materials, which is done in a manner that’s far less boring than the way it sounds. This is a brilliant conception of Shakespeare, far from the “let’s be different to grab attention” Shakespeare of punk Romeos that have fled across our screens in recent years.

The casting is generally very good. Mickey Rooney, in his first film role, displays all the remarkable energy and focus which were his greatest gifts. (What a shame the film industry kissed him off when he matured into a short, pudgy man, who was just as talented!) No prim, polite observer, his Puck is an elemental force, taking malicious delight in the strongly felt emotions of the humans that have come to the forest. Everything is brilliant, bright mockery: his deliberately garbled imitation of the speech and gestures of Lysander prior to the latter’s magical sleep is a good example. This is not a Puck you would want call Robin Goodfellow, not unless you wanted to please him–and you most definitely would want to please him. It is a taut, kaleidoscopically varied performance.

The comic players are also well cast. James Cagney is superb as Bottom, particularly in the monologue that follows waking from what he considers “his dream.” Hugh Herbert brings more variation to a giddy giggle, both for accompanying expression and meaning, than any other human being probably ever has. Frank McHugh is a delight as Peter Quince. Only Joe E Brown, as Flute, goes overboard, trying to steal the scene from others during their lines; but he makes up for it with a delightful Thisbe. Arthur Treacher is very much wasted, with nothing to say; and their are indications in the action that more may have been filmed, or at least planned of their material to film. Considerations of length and/or budget probably intervened.

Victor Jory, so well known even today for his villainous roles (especially in Flash Gordon serials), is a superbly dark Oberon: not sinister, but more of a somber Herne the Hunter type, in contrast to Anita Louise, who is all Elven gossamer. Presumably Reinhardt saw them as a balance of light and dark, perhaps with an overlay of contemporary Austrian psychoanalysis: masculine/dark/forceful against feminine/light/receptive. No, I don’t buy the silly pop analysis of Men Are From Mars, Women From Venus; but in Reinhardt’s AMND, we may be looking at an earlier incarnation of the same values, definitely presented on a more creative level. I don’t buy into Reinhardt’s portrayal of Oberon’s followers as a bunch of anthrompomorphized bats, but I have to admit it works in context. This especially holds true for the ballet sequence where one bat follower symbolically forces a fairy follower of Titania to the ground, overshadows her, then bears her off, horizontal, her hands waving delicately in the air. I suppose we can only be thankful that the Hayes Office wasn’t really paying attention to high prestige Art films.

The lovers are not quite as effective. All four are good, with Olivia de Haviland perhaps the best of the lot; but there’s little sense of emotional depth in their performances, at least enough to draw forth Puck’s disparaging remark about “what fools these mortals be.” Some of this, again, may be due to the director’s conception. Reinhardt clearly plays them more for laughs, cutting a fair amount of the four-way badinage, and deliberately staging at least one famous piece of it as a four-way, non-stop, unintelligble harrangue, in which opponents trade off to continue arguing. The quartet in Adrian Noble’s 1996 AMND is to be preferred, here (though the staging is, IMO, awful).

To round out, I have to return to Reinhardt. He gave many of Hollywood’s greatest talents during the 1920s-40s their apprenticeships. The contemporary notices for his productions are unanimous raves for his artistic insight, integrity, intelligence, directorial ability, and brillance of execution. Yet he would be no more than a footnote in some theatrical encyclopedia if it were not for this single film, made after Reinhardt escaped from the Nazis. A modest success in box offices at the time, Hollywood could not countenance the huge expenditure of resources on such a film, and Reinhardt was a respected pariah in the film community until his death in the early 1940s. But AMND lives on, and provides an excellent sense of what all the excitement was about this master visionary of theater…and potentially, cinema.

A great production of Shakespeare overwhelms us with its oral perfection and sensational visuals. In this case it is the latter, the remarkable stage visuals, that astonish us, as opposed to the elocution of the actors and actresses.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Click Here

Max Reinhardt was a superstar theatre producter of the Berlin twenties.

(Being Jewish, he had to flee the Nazis, once they assumed power). He has created a German High Romantic version of the play. For example, the film has a spiritual glow, a soft-focus radiance when the fairies are in display. Even the palace in Athens has dreamlike, amorphous spires. At moments, I thought I was experiencing a religious vision of the Virgin and Child when Titiana and Bottom were in the forest. Other times, the spiral of fairies ascending in the air reminded me of a William Blake painting of Jacob’s Stairway to Heaven.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Click Here

Regarding the actors, the undisputed star of the film is Mickey Rooney. In this movie, he communicates a manic energy, a malevolent laugh, a force of nature in his peformance. I thought the other actors were substantially weaker…so if you are primarily interested in the language, go for the Peter Hall version of Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Nevertheless, the film is so overwhelmingly stunning that it must belong in anyone’s list of the top 1000 films anywhere. It’s so ironic that with the development of movie special effects in the last 70 years, today’s filmmakers cannot replicate the truly magical effects that Max Reinhardt delivers. Go for the experience, forget the weaknesses, and appreciate this photographic masterpiece for what it is.

This is the first of a four volume set of the original Japanese version of Ultraman Tiga(with subtitles). This is NOT the 4Kids Ent. FOX BOX version shown last year. This is what Ultraman fans in the U.S. have been waiting for! The “Starter Set” will have the first 13 episodes in a collecters box and a T-shirt! The “prophesy” set will be just the episodes. I hope Ultraman Tiga will set the stage for other Ultraman incarnations, like Ultraman Dyna, Ultraman Gaia, or even the older ones would be welcome! I can’t wait…Shoo watt!!

We have waited FOREVER for this to come out in the U.S. As others have said, this is NOT the same version that aired on FoxBox last fall. This is the actual series in Japanese ( with subtitles ) as it was meant to be seen. Even the closing credits of each episode is in Japanese with the ORIGINAL soundtrack.

If you were a fan of the original Ultraman ( and he DOES make an appearance in an episode probably on the last Volume ) - then this is a MUST HAVE.

There is no way this DVD could have been any better. The only nit-picky thing would be to have included a bit more info on the monsters in the episodes but that’s nothing compared to what’s already here. This is without a doubt the BEST purchase I have ever made for this genre.

Believe it or not there are at least 3 other Ultra-series that aired after this one did in 1996. If sales are good, we could see these in the not too distant future as well on DVD.

My advice? TRASH any dubbed, copied or any other illegitimate old versions you may have of the show and BUY THIS DVD. It is worth EVERY PENNY and it will help ensure that more of this great stuff is released.
