Overall I’m very excited about this, even without any of the Special Features, you still get all five movies in Full High Definition

[1080p High Definition 16×9 2.4:1] for less than $90.

I love the Harry Potter movies, so I really looked forward to getting them on Blu-ray. What I noticed immediately, was that years 1-3 really don’t look particular sharp. Years 4 & 5, really do look amazing. The extras are set up a little odd, and really didn’t do much for me.

I hope Harry Potter year 6 & 7 continue to look even better than their predicesors…

This has got to be one of the cutest and funniest anime series I have seen in a long time. Join the super cute Princess Dejiko and her equally cute friends as they try their best to make everybody happy. All the while the evil, and also cute, Deji Devil and his cute apprentice, Piyoko, try their best to make everybody miserable. It’s over four hours of good, whole-some cuteness that just won’t stop.

The other thing I liked about this show is the way the shows themselves are done. Each DVD has three chapters, and each chapter is divided into four, five minute episodes. The four episodes share a common theme making each chapter about twenty minutes long.

So, if you like quality anime with an overdose of cuteness then I highly recommend Panyo Panyo Di.Gi.Charat.

Right off the bat Naruto’s next mission(After bribing Grandma Tsunade) teams him up with Tenten and Neji to help protect a small ninja village called the star village and their special treasure. The star village has a special meteor that gives increased chakra and even unusual chakra abilities to people who drain the chakra from the meteor, but it also comes with a very heavy price using the meteor’s chakra energies eventually leads to the users death, which has caused a division in the star village between those who wish to stop using the meteors energies and those who feel there’s no other choice. After this saga we have Naruto battling another personal problem as he unwittingly becomes the adopted mother to a formerly legendary creature known as the Unba(At least that’s how it sounds like). Than we have Naruto teaming up with Shino of all people to go to a funeral where Shino will as act as the substitute mourner of the person that’s hired them, the reason is that if the chief mourner laughs at the funeral he will loose all the lands that his father will bequeath to him but the will allows a substitute mourner to be in his place, thus Shino is giving the job but like most missions with Naruto somethings bound to happen to mess with the plan. The last few episodes deal with the missing feudal lords daughter from the lands of greens which has been taking over by a band of rogue ninja trying to become feudal lords themselves, the feudal lords daughter flees and tries to regroup and find volunteers to reclaim her lands. This mission saga-arc I felt were the only ones in the series that Naruto just should have let the spoiled lords daughter just die she’s so unlikable I just had no sympathy for her and her attitude, but like Naruto usually does with his usual determination and his sense of ninja way and own morality that won’t let him abandon her. The video is of course clear and sharp and as always the voice cast both Japanese/English did a great job for their character roles. So for hardcore fans rejoice as we come closer to the Shippuden series and for all fans here comes another great box set at a great price for your anime library….

Well what can we say, it’s Naruto fillers. It is a great pick to complete the library if you can stomach the lack of cohesiveness in the storyline. It is basically missions after mission that does not relate to the main story arc. The lack of continuity is apparent, however; there are some redeeming qualities. I enjoyed the Star village filler as well as the Princes story arc. The story in themselves can be funny at times, as well as interesting. Just be patient with this anime, trust me when the main storyline picks up in Naruto Shippuuden you will not be disappointed. Though Shippuuden will contain fillers, I believe the writers of Naruto learned their lesson from this regular series. That is, they blended the fillers with the main story arc, making the Shippuuden series flow alongside the main story arc. They did the right thing in Shippuuden. However; with this series (Regular Naruto), you are gonna get 100+ unrelated fillers until the series goes Shippuuden. Great buy for those who wish to have a complete collection, but if you cannot stomach the fillers, best skip and wait for Shippuuden to be released. As far as DVD quality, it’s great quality, offering both Eng/Jap lang and subtitles. Also it comes with a few more game cards to add to your player deck.

This is the first of seven road pictures (starring Bing and Bob) and it is a good one. I read where the movie was originally set to star George Burns and Gracie Allen in the two lead roles … when it was then adapted for Bing and Bob.

Some good acting here. The later road pictures put the zany actics and funny gag lines way up front … as they should … for our enjoyment, but The Road to Singapore has more of a credible plot and better acting. Dorothy Lamour is an excellent actress. Her one scene near the end, on the ship deck with Bob, is pretty special.

My rank for this road picture (among the seven) is third or fourth. And it’s just fun to see the boys at the beginning of what would become a great series of motion pictures.

That’s the title of the best-known tune which was introduced in this first entry in the immensely popular ROAD TO…. series. In this one, Josh Mallon, the scion of a straightlaced shipping magnate, and his free-spirited pal, Ace Lannigan, ridicule the institution of marriage. However, Josh’s Dad is disgusted with his son’s irresponsible antics & commits Josh to an office job and a marriage to socialite Gloria Wycott…The working title of this just-average first outing from the famed duo of Hope & Crosby was FOLLOW THE SUN. Other songs which are heard in the picture are: SWEET POTATO PIPER, KAIGOON, THE MOON AND THE WILLOW TREE & CAPTAIN CUSTARD (!). In 1940, the Ohio Censorship Board demanded that the studio (Paramount) make extensive cuts in the native dancing girl sequence.

First I want to say that if you are just considering buying one or two of these DVDs individually…forget it and just buy the whole set. All three presentations are amazing and have a high re-watch value, plus if you buy the set you get a bonus disc with a few more videos. If you ever saw that show late night on MTV in the late 90’s called “Amp” this set has several of the videos featured on that show.

I hafta say the Michel Gondry disc is the best because its not only double sided, but has a nice 2-part documentary on Gondry that is extremely interesting. Also, if anybody else that watched this disc is wondering about all the Kate Winslet and Jim Carey references, its because Gondry was directing the movie Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind when this disc was made. I highly recomend that movie as well.

Even though the Chris Cunningham disc has the least amount of features, the works that it does contain are worth having since they are so beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Cunningham’s work in the future.

And the Spike Jonze disc is great as well. Its also double-sided like the Gondry disc.

I might be biased to review this because I happen to already like most the artists and all the songs that the directors did videos for. So its like having a DVD of music videos for songs from my own music collection. But even with the sound turned down and other music playing, this set makes a room a bit more interesting.

The set is good for (besides just watching it uninterupted) visuals for parties; playing while doing housework; background entertainment while you’re on the phone.

It pretty much replaces conventional entertainment.

The only thing lacking is directors’ commentaries. I think the Spike Jonze disc has a few, but i’d love to have that extra audio track to listen to for every video. The Gondry stuff is just so visually wild but practically simple that I’d love to hear Michel describe it. And the Cunningham work is very interesting….i’m sure he has some interesting things to say. I keep mentioning Spike last because he’s the most popular and most people are already familiar with his work, but i’d like to hear his commentaries as well.

I guess you can look at the accompanying bookletts as a substitute for commentaries. The books are a nice supplement to the video presentations. Each book is 40-60 pages at least, full color, has interviews and thoughts written by the directors.

I highly recomend this set, not just the individual volumes. Don’t waste your money on buying just one volume because once you see it you are going to wonder what you’re missing with the rest anyway.

I got the Spike Jonze DVD for Christmas and was already familiar with some of his work such as the Fat Boy Slim videos for “Praise You” and “Weapon of Choice” (featuring Christopher Walken dancing through a deserted hotel). I don’t like everything he has made, but his good stuff is really excellent and he has a great talent for coming up with simple but very original concepts (like him leading a dance group outside a cinema in L.A. to the beats of FatBoy Slim). Also, he is partly responsible for bringing us MTV’s “JackAss”, of course!

One of my personal favourites is “Drop” by The Pharcyde which was filmed entirely backwards with some very amusing results. Also “What’s Up Fatlip?” by Fatlip who seems to be one of the few rappers that dares to appear on camera without four models hanging off each arm. In fact, he cycles through suburbia with a kiddie seat on the back of his bike, lets his 6 year old cousin kick him in the balls and raps on the street clad in nothing but a dirty raincoat and a diaper.

Listening to Jonze’s commentary about making some of the videos is very revealing and, accompanied by the candid descriptions of failed attempts in the booklet, helps you realize that even highly successful directors like Jonze and Cunningham make mistakes too. Chris Cunningham in particular is very critical of his own work which unfortunately resulted in his DVD containing less videos than the other two.

Cunningham’s style is very dark and ominous and in some cases downright scary, as in “Come To Daddy” (Aphex Twin). You’ve probably seen it and if so, you will probably never forget it as it depicts a deformed character in a TV set screaming “Come to daddy!” at children who all have Richard D. James’ grinning face (Aphex Twin himself). I can barely watch it as it is exactly the kind of thing my nightmares are made of, but Madonna obviously liked it as she asked Cunningham to direct her video for “Frozen” after having seen it.

Probably the most notable video on the Cunningham DVD is Bjork’s “All Is Full of Love” in which the Icelandic songstress is a white, plastic robot on an assembly line who ends up passionately kissing an identical robot, therefore kissing herself. The movements are so fluid and well done that it’s almost arousing to watch, despite all the machinery surrounding them. Bjork is the common denominator in this set of DVDs as all directors have worked with her. It is Michel Gondry however who has the most Bjork videos to his name.

“Joga”, “Bachelorette”, “Hyperballad”, “Army of Me”, “Isobel” and “Human Behaviour” are all on there, along with other artists such as Kylie Minogue, The Rolling Stones, Daft Punk and Oui Oui (a band that Gondry himself played drums in for a while). I had never heard the name Gondry until this set came out, but as the title of this review suggests, he is my new hero now! Wow, he makes some jaw-dropping videos which, besides pioneering new video compositing techniques, prove the guy is a genius in creative concepts. He has such a good feel for which images go with the track. Take “Fell in Love With A Girl” by The White Stripes for example: entirely animated out of blue, yellow, red, black and white lego blocks! It works so well particularly because he sticks to very rough shapes and doesn’t overdo the details.

Gondry is the man responsible for the Rolling Stones video “Like A Rolling Stone” in which Patricia Arquette crawls through Manhattan in a drugged haze. That video had a very strong “how on earth did he do that?” quotient as it appears to be made up of still photographs morphed into eachother, yet has the fluidity of film. In fact, most of his videos make you wonder how he realized certain effects and how he came up with the idea in the first place? The video for the Chemical Brothers’ “Star Guitar” is worth buying this DVD for on its own. A view from a speeding train, the landscape rushing by as you might expect it to, until you realize that the landscape is in time with the music. Buildings. bridges and trees fly in and out of the frame on the beat, almost putting you in a trance. Pure genius again (sorry to keep repeating myself).

The booklet accompanying the Gondry DVD contains background information on the making of certain videos, but also pages of personal polaroids and drawings and stories which Gondry faxed from L.A. to his 6-year-old son, Paul in Paris. There’s a collection of home-movies and experiments and a documentary about Gondry, named “I’ve Been 12 Forever”, a very apt title. My favourite page in the book is one with photos of every car Gondry’s father ever owned. I love that kind of wacky stuff.

I have been a Bogart fan all my life. He was that rare Hollywood breed so seldom seen today - and actor AND a movie star. In this “little” movie, Bogart and March lock wills - each knowing that the other is dangerous and desperate, each knowing that they both have more than their own lives to lose. They take the conflict to the edge, their hands, virtually at each other’s throats in nearly every scene and then find a way to back off to live another day or another hour. In the quiet moments, March stares away from the camera several times, effectively showing the “wheels turning,” an action not lost on Bogart. When he catches him at it he says “click-ity, click-ity” and warns him not to try anything. Advice, you know he’ll never heed. This movie may not appeal to viewers who have grown up watching shoot-em-ups but movie fans and fans of good acting will find plenty to hold their attention. A few of the bit players, especially the cops, are saddled with hokey 1950’s dialog but you’ll get over it. The ending is all you could ask for. I suggest you give it a shot.

If I remember correctly “The Desperate Hours” was originally a stage play that was based on a true story. A photo-magazine ran a spread on either the play or the film with pictures of the “real” house and the family sued for invasion of privacy; one of their lawyers was Richard Nixon. Humphrey Bogart gets top-billing in “The Desperate Hours” as gangster on the lam Glenn Griffin, but this is really Frederic March’s film. March plays businessman Dan Hilliard, who discovers his home has been invaded and his family taken hostage by Griffin’s little band of criminals, which includes his kid brother Hal (Dewey Martin) and the brutish Sam Kobish (Robert Middleton). That morning Hilliard’s biggest concerns had been Chuck Wright (Gig Young), the boyfriend of his daughter Cindy (Mary Murphy), the refusal of young son Ralphie (Richard Eyer) to kiss his old man goodbye, and what wife Eleanor (Martha Scott) is going to make for dinner. Now he has to find a way to keep his family alive in a world where the police are perfectly willing to gun down unarmed criminals so their ability to protect an innocent family is certainly suspect.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Desperate Hours! Click Here

This is a taunt drama, carried mostly by the desperation of March’s character, who fails every time he tries to prove himself the hero. Bogart’s performance is notable because it is a return to the tough guy role that made him a star, only this time showing more restraint than we had seen two decades earlier. This 1955 film also stands as a testament to how much things have changed in Hollywood, because they would never allow for this clean of an ending to this situation, a point that would be obvious even without the horrible remake of this film with Mickey Rourke and Anthony Hopkins, which gives into the perceived need for sadistic violence.

Ultimately what makes this film work is that the climax exceeds our expectations given the set-up. You have to admire how a man can walk into a house with an unloaded gun and save the day. The final confrontation between Hilliard and Griffin is powerful because it speaks to not only the fact that you can hurt somebody without killing them, but also that even when confronted with barbarians there is still virtue in being a civilized man. I still watch the ending of this film every time I stumble across it on television. In fact, I just did.

Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 film “Seven Samurai” is regarded as a great and influential film that is among the few Japanese films that has captivated audiences worldwide for so long. The legendary film was about a village of farmers hiring seven samurai’s to protect the village from bandits has been revamped for GONZO’s 2004 anime “Samurai 7.

First appearing on the anime satellite television channel Animax in 2004 as a high definition CS-Pay-Per-View series, the series was later shown in the US on IFC (International Film Channel) in 2006. Unlike the film which takes place in feudal Japan, “Samurai 7 takes place in a cyberpunk era that blends together feudal Japan with high-technology with mecha robotic suits.

“Samurai 7 also has quite a bit of talent behind it as the series is directed by Toshifumi Takizawa known for directing classics such as “Dirty Pair”, “Crusher Joe” and “Big Wars”(and also storyboards for mecha anime such as “Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta Gundam”, “Mobile Suit Victory Gundam).

Character designs are by Hideki Hashimoto (known for a lot of key animation work for “Heat Guy J”, “Great Teacher Onizuka” and “Mobile Suit Gundam”) and Takuhito Kusanagi (known for his mechanical design work for “Blue Submarine No. 6 and “Tower of Druaga”).

The series begins with the villagers of the rice village of Kanna. Peasants who are forced to harvest rice for the Nobuseri bandits. The Nobuseri are ruthless as they take nearly all the rice of the villagers and even go as far as taking their women and children.

The villagers hardly have anything to eat but the villagers know they can’t live life the way they are living now and so, with the approval of their village elder, three people will take their remaining rice to find samurai’s who will fight against the bandits and free the village.

The village send three people to hire samurai’s with their rice.

Kirara: The village priestess who has a crystal that can read the hearts of people.

Komachi: The young sister of Kirara

Rikichi: The male villager who accompanies both Kirara and Komachi. Rikichi despises the Nobuseri bandits because they took his wife.

During their search in the city for samurai’s to protect the farming village of Kanna, the city’s heir to Ayamano, Ukyo, develops a crush on Kirara and wants her to join his harem of women. But each time he tries to kidnap her, the samurai’s thwart him and thus leads to Ukyo trying to find ways to kill the samurai’s and capture Kirara.

During their search for samurai in the city, the three eventually find the following samurai who agree to fight against the bandits.

Shimada Kambei - The great samurai who is emotionless since he has been in so many battles and witnessed so many deaths that he lives in his own shadow of pain, constantly asking other samurai of why they became a samurai. The person becomes the leader of the group. Awesome fighting skills.

Katsuhiro Okamoto - The first samurai that is willing to help Kirara and the others. A young and inexperienced samurai who idolizes Kambei and eventually becomes the protector of Kirara. Eventually grows as a samurai after his first major kill.

Gorobei Katayama - An entertainer and former samurai from the great war who is good at detecting intruders and also has unmatched defensive skills by catching an opponents weapons with his hands and quick to dodge attacks.

Shichiroji - A former samurai who fought alongside Kambei. Now runs an inn and has a fiance but decides to join his friend in battle against the bandits. Fights with a big staff with blades and has a prosthetic hand that is used as a grappling hook.

Kikuchiyo - A huge cyborg who is always opinionated and always trying to prove himself as a samurai. Has great strength and carries a big chainsaw word to fight but he is not that smart. A child at heart, Kikuchiyo bonds with Kirara’s younger sister Komachi.

Hayashida Heihachi - A samurai who is laid back and rather eat or be cool than fight. A former mechanical/combat engineer, his knowledge of mechanics provides useful for the team.

Kyuzo - A former bodyguard and talented samurai warrior for Ayamaro, an is an enemy of the samurai’s in the first part of the series. Both Kyuzo and Kanbei go into battle against each other and end with a draw. With both men finding enjoyment in their battle against each other, they vow to fight again. Kyuzo eventually joins the team when he finally finds a great opponent in Kambei. Joining the group because he wants to be the person to fight and kill Kambei, so therefore he joins the team and lends them his skills as a talented samurai.

For this Blu-ray disc release of “Samurai 7, the first two discs contain a total of nine episodes each with the third disc containing the final 8 episodes plus the special features.

VIDEO AND AUDIO:

“SAMURAI 7 was originally a series shown in high definition in Japan. So, needless to say, the picture quality is very good as it is in 1080p High Definition, 16×9.

With that being said, it’s also important to remind everyone that this is a television series and not an OAV or a film which have a bigger budget and much more detail in the overall animation quality.

In Japan, many of these animators have only a week to get an episode done and often are working on other anime series at the same time, so that being said, “Samurai 7 does have beautiful segments during the CG segments but in terms of the animation, character designs are simplistic, color pallet is solid with not much shading.

And for animation that utilizes less detail, this gives the animator more time to focus on the action sequences which they definitely did for “Samurai 7.

So, you can expect to see really good detail when it comes to the CG segments especially during the two wars because there is a lot of mecha battles that utilize the CG. And the background renderings often get the most detail. But picture quality is clear and there are scenes that do showcase a lot of vibrant colors. But for those most part, there is a softness in terms of colors. More focus on earth tones and greens.

For some, a drawback is that nine episodes are put on each disc, some enthusiasts would rather have 4-5 episodes with a higher bitrate but with the style of “Samurai 7, this is a television series not an OVA or film, so one can not expect a super-detailed series. The picture quality is a step up from the DVD release but what “Samurai 7 will appeal to are the audiophiles.

For the audio, audio is presented in Dolby True HD 5.1 in English and Japanese. First, I must say that I was impressed by both voice acting in Japanese and the English dubs. For one, rarely do you get the Japanese audio track in Dolby TrueHD 5.1, so I started the series primarily watching it in Japanese and was in awe of the actual mix and the utilization of the rear channels.

You hear the people in the city chatting and talking at a distance. You hear sound of people talking coming from one side and then the other. Especially in the action scenes and hearing the explosions and blasts and bullet shots.

I switched over to the English track in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and the track also displays the same audio which is fantastic. The voice acting was very well done on the English side of things and overall, just impressed with overall audio quality.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are a good number of special features included on all three discs. For disc 1 and 2, you will need to go to the episodes listing and you will see episode 1 and episode 14 contain a commentary feature. The commentary is based on the English voice dub, so for example episode 14 would feature the ADR director Christopher Bevins, R. Bruce Elliott (voice for Kambei) and Sean Michael Teague (voice of Katsuhiro) commenting on the various characters and how they enjoyed the vocal performance of their co-actors. Of course, English voice dubs are never going into the technical commentary on the animation and why certain scenes are the way they are. But for those who enjoy commentary by English voice dubs, especially these two talents, then you’ll definitely enjoy these two commentary tracks.

On disc 3, there are several special features. Included are:

* Promotional Video - In Japan, their promotional videos for upcoming series are quite long and in this case, this five minute video features the CG action-packed battles and also introducing the Japanese cast involved in the overall production. The video is in Japanese with English subtitles.

* Textless Opening and Ending - The textless opening and ending theme to Avex artists Nanase Aikawa’s opening theme “Unlimited” and Rin’s ending theme of “Fuhen”.

* FUNimation Entertainment Trailers - Trailers for FUNimation Entertainment anime series and film releases.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“Samurai 7 is a pretty interesting take on the Kurosawa 1954 classic but I admit that I totally dig the concept of combining feudal Japan with steampunk technology. For anime, to combine samurai battles with mecha robot suits seems unbelievable, but within the concept of what “Samurai 7 is about and the overall journey of these samurai trying to protect the peasants and their village was quite fun.

The characters all have their own unique abilities and characteristics and the series is just all out non-stop action.

This is my first experience of watching an anime television series on Blu-ray. In the past, most releases were typically film or OVA-based but with “Samurai 7 having the high definition background when initially aired in Japan, the picture quality is clean but at the same time, it’s detail is mostly within the CG scenes and the overall animation, relies on simple character designs that is typical with anime television series versus a film or OVA which the animators have much more time to work on.

But like a next gen video game, an anime series is not all about its graphics, for this series, what works is the adventure, the journey, the action and its enjoyable characters but most importantly, a well-crafted storyline. During the first 18-episodes, I really enjoyed the fight for the village but then there was a short lull as the episodes started to focus on twisted, protagonist Ukyo trying to usurp in power and become the next emperor and then suddenly getting back to the action-packed storyline and setting up the ultimate war.

There are some who may not see the need for high definition with their anime, especially if you are going to watch it on a 17-24 computer monitor but for those who want to watch anime in HD on their large television screens (especially using HD projectors) and seeing more detail and of course getting Dolby TrueHD sound in both Japanese and English is a plus.

Overall, I really enjoyed “Samurai 7. It manages to hold some of the enjoyment that made the original film so classic but the incorporate the adventure and the “other world” type of features you would expect from an anime series. Again, samurai vs. mecha suits? Who would of imagined that?

“Samurai 7 is an enjoyable television series and I’m very happy that FUNimation Entertainment brought this series to Blu-ray!

I own the collector’s edition of the original series on regular dvd and I’m not sure yet if its worth getting the new one. Anime is a weird thign to put on blu-ray because it doesn’t suffer from the contrast and lighting issues that plague most movies. The sound can be easily bumped up in quality to either 5.1 or 7.1 dolby surround, if thats important to you. I just don’t feel that most anime does any better on blu-ray than it does in upconversion.

If you do not own this set yet however and own a blu-ray player, this is a very reasonable price for such an incredible anime series. Being a remake of a classic cultural story from Japan, its already steeped in history, but the reimagining of the series and book is just incredible. I’ve never fallen in love with a main character like I did in this story. He is simply one of the most tough-A-$-$-ed anime samurai you will ever meet and he is everything that epitomizes the samurai code. The story features many characters that are believable, well developed, and consistent as well as great themes that still hold true today in many respects. Whether your in for the story or the action, it doesn’t matter, its worth it on both counts.

The animation technique is much liek Burst Angel or the Karas movies in that they combine some cg elements with the anime to create some jaw-droppping scenes which include sword-wielding tough-guys taking down gigantic machines in ways you never thought possible. Far-fetched? Sure, but its some of the most fun I’ve ever had escaping into an anime world. I highly recommend this series to anime lovers everywhere.

Chapter 18: Sozin’s Comet Part 1: The Phoenix King - “Team Avatar” (Sokka’s pet name for the group) prepares for a confrontation with the Fire Lord while Ozai assigns Azula a special honorable title - and crowns himself Supreme Ruler - with his own special title.

Chapter 19: Sozin’s Comet Part 2: The Old Masters - Aang sets out alone to decide how to deal with the Fire Lord while the rest of the group set out to find Uncle Iroh.

Chapter 20: Sozin’s Comet Part 3: Into the Inferno - Zuko and Katara pair up to face Azula in the Fire Nation, while Sokka, Zuki and Toph team up to stop Lord Ozai and his army from destroying the Earth Kingdom.

Chapter 21: Sozin’s Comet Part 4: Avatar Aang - The Grande Finale, including Aang’s final confrontation with the Fire Lord and Zuko’s with his sister.

While I found Chapter 17 mostly missable, the final four chapters (18-21) run together like a full-length movie! All loose ends (that I could think of) get tied up nicely, including the fates of all the main and secondary characters.

An excellent way to end the entire series!

Many things were off the hook, especially Aang’s battle with Ozai. That was filled with so much pwnage.

There were several things in this DVD that were one-star for me. Mind you, this is a commentary only on the episodes this DVD, not the rest of the series.

- The ending with the kisses. Ruined it for me, really. There should have been no kissing, it just added kitschiness to the whole ending.

- Plot inconsistencies within the last few episodes (Ember Island Players, Southern Raiders) It feels to me that the writers simply weren’t paying attention and didn’t care to tighten up the plot.

- Many questions left unanswered. The fate of Ursa? Long Feng? The Earth King? The White Lotus? Chit Sang? Teo? Again, it feels like the writers got sloppy. Tsk tsk…

Other than that, the eps were decent. Good animation, and plot holes aside, there were humorous/memorable moments. So overall, when you add the good stuff and bad stuff, this gets 3/5 stars. I really wish the writers had been more attentive and careful though.

While many books and films about South Africa’s Apartheid have attempted to convey the tension and the eventual dissolution of that sociopolitical scheme, few histories bring us as close to the core of the schism as does Bille August’s excellent film THE COLOR OF FREEDOM. Based on the book GOODBYE BAFANA by James Gregory (with Bob Graham) the story details the relationship between Nelson Mandela and prison warden James Gregory during Mandela’s long imprisonment on Robben Island off the coast of South Africa, and the gradual friendship that occurred between these disparate men. Studying this development of a friendship provides an opportunity to better understand the concept of Apartheid and of the evils of racism in general.

Nelson Mandela (Dennis Haysbert) was convicted of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on the desolate Robben Island for his non-violent attempts to end racism in South Africa, attempts that eventually resulted in work stoppages and resistance movements that moved the articulate, well-educated lawyer Mandela into the realm of activism. While on Robben Island he was guarded by one James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes), a pro-apartheid, cruel prison employee who was assigned to Mandela as a spy and censor because of Gregory’s knowledge of the local language Xhosa (learned from his childhood when his best friend was a black boy named Bafana). Gregory lives on the island with this wife (Diane Kruger) and children and his commitment to his family provides a stark contrast to his hatred of his black ‘Kaffir’ prisoners: his involvement with the pro-apartheid status is strengthened by his direct communication with Intelligence in the cities of South Africa where his censored information from the prisoners leads to definitive capture and ‘disposal’ of the blacks. On a trip ashore Gregory and his wife and children witness first hand the beatings and cruelties of the whites against the blacks and Gregory returns to his duties on Robben Island with a gradually changing point of view for the model prisoner Mandela. They begin communicating in Xhosa and Gregory allows Mandela’s wife Winnie (Faith Ndukwana) to spend more committed time with her husband on her restricted visits to Robben island. One particular misstep - Gregory passes Mandela’s Christmas gift of a piece of chocolate to Winnie - threatens Gregory’s status on the island, while at the same time bonding Mandela and Gregory like brothers. Gregory’s life and philosophy have been changed by Mandela’s powerful personality and spirit and his eventual release from prison into the new, freed South Africa has been aided in a small but meaningful way by Gregory - a reflection of Gregory’s childhood bond with his friend Bafana.

August captures the tension and the atmosphere of South Africa in this visually stunning film. Fiennes is superb as James Gregory as is Diane Kruger as his wife. Dennis Haysbert conveys the spiritual essence of Mandela despite the fact that his physical appearance is not at all like the Mandela known so well from the still constant photographs of the diminutive freedom fighter we see frequently. But the film does convey the tenor of the changing times during the 27-year confinement of Nelson Mandela. The featurettes on the DVD offer lengthy history lessons about the real events referenced in the film and add immeasurably to the film’s overall success. There is much to learn from this film in addition to the fact that it is a solid work of cinematic artistry. Grady Harp, July 08

“The Color of Freedom” (also known as “Goodbye Bafana”) is based on the memoirs of James Gregory, South African prison guard and censor officer, who died in 2003. The name of the book is “Goodbye Bafana: Nelson Mandela, My Prisoner, My Friend,” and you may think the book title tells all you have to know. In fact, the truth is a bit different in the film directed by Bille August (”Pelle the Conqueror”). (And I know the controversy over the original book, but I will not talk about it here.)

Though August’s film is inspired by the life of a man who guarded one of the most important political figures of our time, the story of “The Color of Freedom” is not exactly about Nelson Mandela (played by Dennis Haysbert). It is more about James Gregory himself and his family - his wife (Diane Kruger) and their children - and the spiritual transformation James goes through. The story is told against the background of modern South African history, but its perspective is always that of James Gregory.

“The Color of Freedom” can be seen as a portrait of a man caught between his ideal and reality, or family and establishment. Superior officers don’t like the idea of a warden talking friendly with the prisoners, much less reading Freedom Charter in secret. While watching the film, I thought his friendship with Nelson Mandela could easily jeopardize James’s position and James would have to pay the price of his spiritual freedom, but … well, I cannot disclose the plot, which I think is not very dramatic. But you may find it differently.

Dennis Haysber is surprisingly good as Nelson Mandela and Joseph Fiennes did a great job, actually his career-best acting, as the protagonist. The locations of South Africa provide beautiful sceneries and the credible backdrop for the story, but the characters of James Gregory and Nelson Mandela need to be fleshed out more, especially the latter. To understand the changes that happened in James, we have to know more about Nelson Mandela and his personality, but the script lacks information and insight, which could have made the film much better.

Frankly, I don’t see why everybody is so up in arms about the quality of this movie. I, for one, don’t need to preface my review with a disclaimer that only its dance sequences can be enjoyed. I happen to think that it’s a pretty excellent cinematographic work overall. Let me elaborate.

The camera work here is among the most original and clever out there. It’s incredibly dynamic and energetic, offering unusual perspectives, delivering great close-ups, and skillfully capturing the sweeping wide spaces. An unusually large amount of footage is devoted to the city landscapes of St. Petersburg - a rarity in American flicks on Russian themes. It’s all the more jarring, however, that despite attempts to ensure authenticity of the setting, at least the first couple of car rides seem to have been done in a stationary vehicle and plastered rather crudely against the city background. But this is a forgivable and almost charming flaw, considering the film’s limited budget and the release year of 1985.

The film is a paradox of sorts, showcasing interesting performances from Rossellini and Hines, two actors who have since been totally under-appreciated. There’s good chemistry between the impressionable and high-strung duet of Darya and Raymond. Jerzy Skolimovski (Colonel Chaiko) is the classical cunning villain with a Slavic flare. Baryshnikov himself seems a bit rigid and somewhat formulaic as Nikolay Rodchenko. That is when he’s not dancing, of course. For when he dances, he unleashes all imaginable and unimaginable potential.

Obviously, the story line is sketched out in broad, exaggerated strokes. But I bet the filmmakers actually expected the overall theatricality to be taken with a grain of salt. Besides, the subject matter discussed wasn’t keen on subtleties. The events depicted were behind-the-scenes operations all right, but they were as blunt and theatrically bizarre as can be. And as for those who think the circumstances and emotions of the dissidence and emigration (or defection in this case) experience are overblown - brush up on mid-20th century history and get a grip on things. Not only had the Big Brother’s machinery of state control and suppression been well oiled for decades in the Soviet Union and its satellites, but the shadow of this absurd, merciless beast hangs over many of those nations still. Folks, the fictionalized account of Nikolay Rodchenko is merely a _slightly_ glamorized and dramatized version of real life experience of countless victims of the era.

The scenes of Nikolay and Darya fleeing through the deserted streets of Leningrad and the subsequent humiliation they experience in front of the American embassy send chills down my spine every time I watch the movie. That threat and that danger are very real to me even though my emigration experience in the 1990s was simply peachy in retrospect and comparison. Just as disturbing and sobering, by the way, is Rodchenko’s reception by the Americans and the so-called international community inside the gates. He to them is but a nimble exotic specimen…

Anyhow, let me dismount my high horse and reiterate, seconding the earlier reviews, that “White Nights” features superb, matchless dancing; and, to miss it is a deathly sin. Well, almost…

There are essentially four dance highlights in the movie. Choreography is mainly by Baryshnikov, Hines, and, very importantly, Twyla Tharp. Baryshnikov’s duet with Florence Faure in the opening credits is bound to leave your breathless. It is sheer perfection - immensely inventive and impeccably executed. The second instance when you’ll forget that you could blink and breathe is during the 11 rubles for 11 pirouettes number. He does it with a godly effortlessness. Hines’ and Baryshnikov’s dance studio number is fascinating to watch. And, then… Then, there’s Mikhail’s solo to Vysotsky’s tape on the stage of the Kirov theatre. Its beauty is literally painful and words can never describe it.

If you haven’t seen “White Nights” or have seen it only once, you’re denying yourself an unearthly pleasure. And you can snicker at my high-flown sighs and exclamations all you want :)

Don’t tell me , that this is for dancing funs only ! I use to be professional break dancer , enjoied the exellent ” dance ” parts in the film … but I watched it for the story , not the intertainment !
Michail Barishnikov’s character is a ” deserter ” from Russia . He is on the flight to Europe and after big mechanical problems during the flight , the plane had to land in USSR . He is in panic … and later we understand , why ! KGB wanted to make example out of him , so others will not follow …
Put on top of it exellent scenaries of Leningrad , 3rd most beatifull city in Europe … I was lucky to be born there , and I lived there too , for most of my life .
And it is not only about the plot in this movie - to set yourself free … from russian KGB , from the past… If you don’t speak Russian , you don’t know the meaning of the song by Vladimir Visotskiy … Let me go my horses … Let me go … set me free ..! The song , which became a grave monument for one of the greatest ,honest russian singers and actors … he never surrended . But he still alive in his work… in our harts .
