There’s some not-so-pleasant changes in store for the little town of Eureka.

“Eureka Season 3.0″ (meaning the first half of the third season a la “Battlestar Galactica”) provides plenty of those, which adds some new tension to geniustown (including some rather shocking cast changes and a new “love-to-hate” person). It’s kind of disconcerting to only have eight episodes, but they have the signature mixture of warm comedy and intriguing sci-fi mystery.

Among the changes in store: Alison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) and Nathan (Ed Quinn) contemplate remarriage, and Henry is in jail. And the DOD sends in a corporate “fixer” named Eva Thorne (Frances Fisher) arrives to cut the deadwood from Global Dynamics. But then an anti-missile VIPER drone goes AWOL during a flight test and starts threatening Eureka, while Thorne decides to embed herself in Global Dynamics as one of the new bosses.

And while Eva ruthlessly makes GD “profitable,” the usual sci-fi disasters crop up. Carter has to deal with bizarre transformations in a sealed biosphere, a wedding-day timeloop, exploding biomemetic dogs, an impossible volcano brewing under Eureka (and which sprays gross fluids on people), an inept spandex-wearing “Captain Eureka,” a mayoral election heated up by an artificial supernova, and a swarm of ancient Egyptian insects.

In the meantime, Thorne is snooping around Eureka in search of something. Her quest leads to the discovery of a vast military base, and some bodies dead since 1939 — and a bizarre substance that threatens Zoe’s life after she slips and falls in it.

Apparently the once all-important Artifact is yesterday’s business, because the dark subplot of “Eureka Season 3.0″ is the mystery prewar bunker and whatever Thorne wants destroyed. It adds a nice undercurrent of conspiracy and tension to this season, though the focus is always first and foremost on our Everyman Sheriff, and how he tries to deal with the Horrific World-Ending Scientific Crisis of the day.

That’s a nice balance, because the rest of the season flows in a river of gentle humor and extreme scientific problems. Plenty of weird inventions (cloud sculpting, flying rabbits and robot pooches), fun tongue-in-cheek dialogue (”They killed the infected and burned the city to the ground.” “Let’s call that Plan B”), and hilarious comedic moments. And Carter’s always in the middle of it, trying to unravel a way to fix things.

But it’s worth noting that while the Disasters Du Jour and the bunker plots are dealt with by the eighth episode, the half season ends with a cliffhanger for one character. Just sayin’.

Ferguson does a brilliant job as Carter, the down-to-earth Everycop who just wants to do his job (”It’s all fun and games until someone gets cursed”). But Carter has some new problems in this season — his new-agey, pregnant sister moves in with him, and Zoe continues to spread her wings with a job and boyfriend. Erica Cerra’s Jo experiences some relationship woes, while Richardson-Whitfield’s Alison is put in the position of being pretty powerless. Sadly, a longtime cast member also exits the scene early on.

This season also sees the return of Henry, whose skills turn out to be too invaluable for him to rot in prison — and he even gets a new job on top of his old one. And Fisher turns out to be a great addition: she initially makes a great steely-eyed corporate dictator, but the facade cracks as time goes on, and we get to see that she’s haunted by something terrible in the past.

“Eureka Season 3.0″ is way too short (new episodes coming in July), but it still has the fresh mix of out-there sci-fi and small-town comedy. Definitely still worth the seeing.

Due to the writers’ strike two years ago, all scripted shows were unfortunately shortened, resulting in seasons where it was months between new episodes. For some shows, the wait was too long and some were eventually cancelled due to poor ratings.

Luckily, for fans of Eureka, the creators simply split the season into two parts; an eight episode arc, which aired last July, and the second one, which premieres this July. The result is a longer season spread over two years, much like Battlestar Galactica. Some may call the upcoming episodes Season Four, but it’s technically the second half of Season 3.

In any event, the first half of Season 3 is now out on DVD, just in time for the premiere of the remaining season. And while short on episodes, the show was at the top of it’s game this season. I don’t know about you, but to me this show is like comfort food. I love the characters and I love the world they inhabit. A perfect cast led by Colin Ferguson get the most out of the sometimes unbelievable situations. I won’t go into the whole story arc, suffice to say that there is a new arrival in Eureka, who harbors a big secret about the town’s past. And as the saying goes, out with old and in with the new, as SPOILER ALERT! a regular cast member departs midway through.

So while it might be frustrating to only have eight episodes here (and I watched all of them in one afternoon!), I personally prefer quality over quantity. My only grief with this set is a lack of an episode guide. That, and it would have been great to have the musical promo they did before the first episode last year! It was terrific and it’s kind of a tease that they mention it in the music featurette and show a clip of it too, but not the whole thing. That’s only a small complaint, because really the episodes are what it’s all about and I absolutely recommend picking this up!

This set is wonderful! All 5 films plus a bonus documentary hosted by the late great Roddy McDowall, Behind The Planet Of The Apes is a 126 minute making of which shows the origins and the ideas that lead to the filming of the saga which began in 1967, thru the rest of the films ’til 1973 as well as the two television series (live action and animated) and the rereleasing of the films and marketing. But you have to buy this set soon because after the first 100,000 are sold, the next sets will not, I repeat, will not include the Behind The Planet Of The Apes documentary, which, to me, is the best special feature you get with these movies. The lowdown on the films is this: Planet Of The Apes is a classic. Trust me, if you don’t like this one you won’t like the rest. The ending is historic. Beneath The Planet Of The Apes is a good second effort. I just wish Charlton Heston would’ve starred in the entire picture instead of the beginning and ending. (note: the trailer for this film is different from the one given on the VHS version (you can still see parts of that one on the documentary)). Escape From The Planet Of The Apes is a very original installment which takes place in the past circa 1973. This one is lighter and more fun up until the end. Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes is the most underated of all the Apes films. This is the only ape film that recieved a PG rating for violence and deservedly so, but what makes this one unique is Roddy McDowell’s understated performance as Ceaser, the ape who would lead his brothers and sisters to victory over the humans who have enslaved them. This is the darkest of the set and, to me, deserves better recognition. Battle For The Planet Of The Apes is a decent 5th installment. This film was made primarily for the kiddies, so, bearing that in mind you should know what to expect and even so, this film is still quite entertaining. None of these films were a boxoffice failure. They all made money. So go ape and grab this set, which includes the trailers for all 5 films, a photo gallery for the first 2 films and of course, the documentary, Behind The Planet Of The Apes. Don’t dawdle, grab this set soon. You don’t want to give up the documentary. It’s a perfect companion to the rest of the films that gives you some great insight and will be highly collectable in the near future.

A brilliant series that is captured perfectly on DVD.

However, there is one flaw: there are two scenes that appeared in the original ‘director’s cut’ of Battle for the Planet of the Apes that were left off the DVD:

1. before the mutants leave to attack ape city, Governor Kolp shows Mendez and Alma the doomsday bomb, and instructs them to launch it at Ape City if he should not return.

2. at the end of the film, Mendez and Alma decide to not launch the bomb. instead, they worship it - with Mendez as the leader.

These two scenes nicely round out the entire series, but were only shown in the TV version. Why Fox didn’t include them in the film, or at least as special features, is beyond me.

It’s unforgivable. That’s why the series is only getting 3 stars.

A very funny French comedy, this movie, and its sequel, was a huge hit in France.

A medieval knight (Jean Reno, of “The Professional” and “Godzilla” fame) and his servant (Christian Clavier, a famous French comic actor, unknown abroad) got magically transported forward in time to the XXth century, where he meets his descendants - and tries to adjust to our modern world, from the mysteries of running water and flushing toilets, to those of modern women and the free pursuit of life and happiness for all. The pace never slacks, the movie offers a series of sight gags, as well as a number of more tongue-in-cheek and even (gasp) intellectual jokes and double-entendres -along w/ some “profound” reflexions slickly intertwined w/in the storyline. The movie can be approached at several levels, from the basic visceral to the high-fallutin’, and has appeal to different audiences - and viewers’ moods. The language is precious (difference between old French and modern French) but there’s enough situational and sight humour in there that even non-French speakers should find the movie enjoyable.

The U.S. remake, albeit with the same main actors, was not quite on a par, as seems to be too often the case. I felt it favored the slapstick, and neglected the more subtle undertones that the original managed to carry as well.

If I have to pick a nit, it would be that that the DVD doesn’t offer more Special features - but the movie is well-worth the purchase (or rental :-) anyway. Pick a bottle of wine and some good cheese, and make an evening of it!

This is supposedly the highest grossing French movie of all time. I believe it. This movie is well-acted and supurbly scripted.

Jean Reno stars as the civilized brute, Godefroy le Hardi, living in the 1100s with his vassal, Jacquouille la Fripouille, played by Christian Clavier. Godefroy wishes to return to the past to correct a grave error, but the very old, possible senile, wizard omits the “oeufs de caille” from the recipe and Godefroy and Jacquouille find themselves in the future.

Godefroy finds his “petite-petite-petite-petite fille” Béatrice de Montmirail, played superbly by Valerie Lemercier, who has modern French aristocratic tics down pat. He is disgusted to find that his Chateau is now a hotel in the hands of a nouveau-riche commoner, Jacquard also played by Clavier. Without telling the whole story, Godefroy is, of course, trying to get back to the past to be with his beloved Dame Frenegonde, also played by Lemercier.

The acting in this movie is fantastic, the main characters, Reno, Clavier, Lemercier and Marie-Anne Chazal are all very funny. The supporting cast is just as good, with the beautiful Isabelle Nanty playing a gossipy, litiginous executive assistant and Christian Bujeau as Béatrice de Montmirail’s high-strung, dentist husband.

There is a lot of word play between the medieval French spoken by Godefroy and Jacquouille and modern French. The English sub-titles leave quite a bit to be desired, as they don’t do a very good job conveying this. If you don’t speak French you may find that this movie relies heavily on sight gags because the complex language jokes are lost in translation. However, I have watched this with non-French speaking friends before and they have still enjoyed the movie very much. If you speak French you will enjoy this movie tremendously. I am a fluent speaker and it has taken me several watchings to get all the subtleties of language in this movie. I laugh out loud each time I watch it. It remains to this day, 10 years after I first saw it in the theater and countless movies later, one of my all-time favorites!

I give this edition of the movie a 4 out of 5 for a few reasons, none related to the movie itself, but still minor annoyances that detract from the film. For example, you cannot turn off the subtitles as far as I can tell. Additionally, the English subtitles aren’t entirely faithful to what is said on screen. This doesn’t detract from the film but it is still obnoxious, there are no bonus materials at all with this DVD.

Despite these minor things I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good, accessible French comedy, especially if you are a fan of Reno or Clavier.

I received advance copies of the Region 1 release and just had to gush about these incredible DVDs.

In October of 1999 the first wave of James Bond 007 Special Editions was released. It was in fact the second time that the series had seen a release on those shiny silver discs having first appeared in the much-maligned “snapper” cases two years earlier. But these special feature laden releases were immediately hailed as setting a new benchmark for back catalog releases of movies on DVD.

Times however have since changed. And the single disc editions that appeared in a set of three waves in 1999 and 2000 now look, at best merely serviceable and at worst wholly inadequate when compared to the bumper releases that have been afforded to the likes of other favorites from the last 40-plus years.

So on Tuesday Fox will release the first two of four volumes that are touted as the Ultimate Edition’s of all 20 of the movies in the storied franchise. The collection of special features this time around are a virtual embarrassment of riches and each movie has been remastered by the team that oversaw the work on the original Star Wars trilogy - Lowry Digital. The result is so impressive that movies the likes of 1964’s “Goldfinger” now look they were made last year instead of over 42 years ago.

John Lowry, who started his career with NASA, spent two and a half years restoring the picture and sound quality on all 20 Bond films, which in total consisted of 42 miles of film. According to information released by the studio the combination of automated computer processing and digital retouching led to the removal of 25 million pieces of dirt and 74,000 “hairs in the gate” in addition to restoring more than 30,000 frames of scratched or torn images.

Buy,Download, Or Stream James Bond Ultimate Edition - Vol. 2! Click Here

The difference is most evident in the older movies and when I watched “The Spy Who Loved Me” (for example) I seriously felt like I was watching a new movie - particularly during the demise of the Liparus super tanker.

There has also been an improvement in the audio department has a brand new 5.1 DTS mix.

The special features will impress even the most ardent and knowledgeable James Bond fan. Take for example the DVD for the 1985 adventure “A View to a Kill.” In the 2000 release fans were amazed to see the inclusion of a hitherto unknown deleted scene set in a Paris Police Station. In the release Tuesday the Paris scene is still there, but several more deleted scenes join it. These ranges from the scene where fishermen (along with Bond) demonstrate outside of the main villains San Francisco operations to a more minor scene that shows said villain and his henchman and henchwoman carrying cans of gasoline into City Hall. Director John Glen who explains why they were eventually cut from the movie introduces each.

This all-inclusive approach to special features pervades these releases with everything from the inclusion of archival reports from the set for British television to a home movie from the Egyptian set of “The Spy Who Loved Me.”

Of course the real jewel in the crown of the releases are the newly recorded audio commentaries by James Bond actor Sir Roger Moore for his seven movies. Last year Moore recorded the commentaries over a period of five days starting with the last of his movies (A View to a Kill) and working backwards. He prefaces each of his commentaries by claiming not to remember much about the production history of the movies and urges the listener to merely approach them as a one-way conversation. However, despite his claim Moore does seem to recollect quite a bit about the movies and his light breezy tone and dry wit make the commentaries a real draw. He does have a habit of getting sidetracked on occasion and discusses other projects other than James Bond, but each of the commentaries is well worth a listen.

My particular favorite commentary in Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 is the one that accompanies “A View to a Kill.” For many years fans questionned where Maud Adams’ cameo was in this movie (she had famously visited the set during the San Franciso shoot), with not even Maud Adams knowing where she was. Well, there’s a big clue to where she appears when Roger Moore remarks that the man walking out of shot is Maud Adams boyfriend. Watch the couple in the background shortly after this remark on the commentary.

The only real quibble I have is regarding the “007 Mission Control” section of the DVDs. These are merely a collection of clips from the movie and as such seems a tremendous waste of valuable disc space. For example say you click on “Girls” from the Mission Control main menu. A menu appears listing the girls in that particular movie and if you click on their name you are provided with a menu listing a series of clips including that character. Not only is this highly redundant for those who have watched the movie (which one would presume people who own the DVD have done) but its also very selective. Take for example the character of Anya Amasova in “The Spy Who Loved Me.” The first clip offered is her meeting with James Bond at the Kalba club. Surely the first should have been her famous introduction (where audiences expentations are turned on their head) and the scene where she learns of her lovers death.

Another minor gripe is the treatment of “Die Another Day” in this set. Whereas all the previous content from the other movies Special Editions are included in these Ultimate releases, the same cannot be said for the “Die Another Day” discs. Released already as a 2-disc set on its initial DVD release in 2003, this edition seems to have dropped the extensive documentary on the making of the movie. I was not a big fan of said documentary as I found it to be largely fluff, but its strange that it was not included here, especially since they probably used up space that could have accomodated it with the afore-mentioned “Mission Control” section. There are some interesting tidbits on the “Die Another Day” discs including the “From Script to Screen” doco (that had appeared previously only in Region 2) and a fascinating coverage of the parachite jump over Buckingham Palace, but the omission of the lengthy “Making of…” documantary from the previous release is puzzling.

The movies are in slim cases. The big fear among Bond fans when images of the cover packages were released was that it would be a gatefold design. The slim cases are 2-disc sets with disc 1 facing disc 2.

For those fans and collectors who like to place the DVDs in chronological order when displaying them on the shelf, there is a solution. The inner casingo for the DVDs are in the familiar shape common to storing magazines. This allows the collector to place this casing back in the box backwards so that the spines of the DVDs (with their titles on them) are facing out.

Recommended for everyone from the casual viewer to the most fervent Bond fan.

REVIEW: When you talk about something as iconic as James Bond there really isn’t much to say that you as a film enthusiast don’t already know. With the release of Casino Royale we finally see the definitive editions of the Bond films on DVD. Let me tell you right now that these sets are absolutely stunning, the treatment that the films got are worthy of their iconic status. The Bond films have thrilled generations from 1962 to 2006 and we all know Bond will return to thrill in the future.

Ian Fleming had no idea what he had on his hands when he wrote Casino Royale and introduced this mysterious super spy into the world of fiction. It’s a shame that Fleming only survived long enough to witness the first two films in the franchise. The reason why the films have lasted as long as they have is because of the formula, which is discussed a bit on The World Is Not Enough DVD. There are certain elements to the Bond formula that audiences have come to expect. It’s funny, because if any of these ingredients are used in any old action movie then that movie is labeled unoriginal and formulaic. However, with the Bond films it’s a rule of thumb that certain ingredients have to be used: there has to be some sort of plot of world domination, a villain with some sort of unique physical characteristic, the girls (both good and bad), the car, the gadgets, the romance, the stunts, the locales, and of course that element of fantasy. Every Bond film has those ingredients, the only thing that stays the same between the films is the element of fantasy. Well, that still doesn’t explain why the Bond films have continued to be successful, I mean what is the appeal? We have a protagonist that cannot die, an antagonist who must die, we know how the gadgets work before he uses them, and we all know Bond gets the girl and saves the world. Why does that appeal to people so much? I think it’s because it’s fantasy yet it seems extremely attainable and realistic. We want to believe that there is a man out there who is a spy, who travels around the world to foil terrorist plots, who gets all the women, and basically can escape from any situation no matter how grim it looks. No other action film has replicated what a Bond film can do even though there have been so many attempts.

The new DVD sets are what DVD sets should be. The “Ultimate Edition” label on them couldn’t be more true in that these sets are the definitive Bond experience. Lowry Digital did a frame by frame restoration of every film and the result is absolutely spectacular. We also have brand new DTS 5.1 tracks for each film. Each film is also loaded with extras, an incredible amount of extras that will take you probably months to get through. The films are divided into 4 volumes with 5 movies in each set. The only downfall of the sets are that they are packaged and sold out of chronological order, which makes it irritating for collectors like myself who likes everything to be in order. Everybody is complaining and wondering why they released them like this, and it’s really simple marketing here. If they were to sell the sets with films going chronological order then people who maybe only like Connery as Bond will only buy one volume. By spreading each Bond across all four sets then people are forced to buy all the sets. My question is why don’t they just make one huge box set for the dedicated fans with all the movies set in order. They did that with the previous releases in the UK, and I think that die hard fans would go for a set like that. Anyway, despite the compilations of the volumes, these are amazing sets.

VOLUME 2:

Thunderball (1965): The one and only Bond film to win an Oscar (Best Visual Effects) takes Bond to the Bahamas where he tracks down SPECTRE’s number-two man, Largo. The film has some incredible chases and of course the famous jetpack escape. Tom Jones delivers an incredible performance for the opening title song and sets up a classic Bond adventure with shark tanks and all.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977): This was one of my favorite Bonds mostly because of the seemingly invincible Jaws, a Bond villain as iconic as Oddjob. Only in a Bond film can you have a villain who has steel jaws that can bite through metal and it all seems completely plausible. An incredible fight atop a cable car is one of the film’s most memorable scenes.

A View To A Kill (1985): Roger Moore’s last film in the series is a memorable one, mostly because of Christopher Walken’s portrayal of Max Zorin. You also have the incredible and climactic action scene atop the Golden Gate Bridge including a giant blimp. The only thing about the movie that I didn’t like was the character of May Day who is just bizarre looking and doesn’t look like a femme fatale at all, although she does lead Bond up an exciting climb up the Eiffel Tower.

License To Kill (1989): The first Bond film to achieve a PG-13 rating is a bit different than Dalton’s first outing as Bond. I found the truck chase at the end to be really well done, but overall the movie just didn’t cry out Bond to me. I mean, Bond is basically a rogue agent in this movie and that just doesn’t seem to fit the character. Robert Davi creates a deliciously evil drug lord, except instead of a cat he has an iguana. You’ll recognize a really young Benicio Del Toro as a disposable henchman.

Die Another Day (2002): The 20th official Bond film would also be Pierce Brosnan’s last, a descision to this day that has a few people scratching their heads. While Daniel Craig looks to make a good bond, it was Brosnan who embodied the new age Bond, but apparently he wasn’t hip enough. Die Another Day was directed by Lee Tamahori, a choice I still question since he went on to direct xXx: State Of The Union right after this. In this film Bond battles a Chinese guy who gets a race change and turns into a British guy, who wants to be all powerful, who lives in an ice palace. Yeah, so the film is a bit overstretched, but there are some great scenes that make it worthwhile. The hovercraft chase at the beginning will give your home theater a great workout, and the car chase on the ice was very impressive. The fact that the bad guy is just some guy with diamonds imbedded in his skin makes it kind of lame, and Halle Berry doesn’t make a good Bond girl at all. Her lines and her acting are all laughable, but she does look good in an Ursula Andress style bikini. There is one scene were Bond takes a parachute and a piece of metal and surfs a giant tidal wave that was called one of the most ridiculous Bond moments ever. Madonna also hurts the film not only with her techno title song, but her pointless cameo. Die Another Day has some great action, but the plot is over the top even for a Bond film.

VIDEO: Okay, now let’s talk about how pretty these sets are. Lowry Digital (now DTS) did a frame by frame restoration for each film. The older films are where you will notice the difference. The color and quality are not just brighter, but they are richer. What once looked faded and washed now looks lively and textured. Black levels are not fuzzy and they are incredibly sharp. In Goldfinger the Aston Martin is so shiny you feel like you can touch it. Overall it’s breathtaking what they accomplished with these restorations.

AUDIO: The sound department is even more impressive. My old Bond DVD’s were not fun to watch on my surround system. Now every single film in the set has a brand new 5.1 DTS mix that will blow you away. Sound is an important component to film, and even though some people oppose creating 5.1 mixes from mono and stereo tracks there is an undeniable advantage to the new mixes. The sound now envelopes you and the explosions truly use the surround channels. The dialogue is mostly dedicated to the center channel for the older films. Overall the improvements are noticeable and truly benefit the viewing experience.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Just when you thought that the improved picture and sound was enough, we have a seemingly endless supply of special features and goodies. For owners of the old sets there will be some familiar stuff. The main “making of” featurettes, which run for around 30-40 minutes each, are the same documentaries that were found on the old sets. However, we have a bunch of archival footage added on and some bonus featurettes that have never been seen before. There is even an incredibly old on set interview with Connery on the Goldfinger DVD that looks like it was about to disintegrate before it was digitalized. The DVD’s also have lots of screen tests, lots of featurettes on the cars and the supporting characters. There also various commentaries on the DVD’s. There is so much bonus material to work through that you will probably still be watching featurettes once the other 2 volumes are released in December. While the new transfers and sound mixes alone make the sets a must buy, the new special features should make you flip with joy.

BOTTOM LINE: I have been a huge Bond fan ever since I was little. I owned all of them on VHS and previously on DVD. These Ultimate Editions are absolutely stunning and are in no way some marketing stint to mooch off the publicity of Casino Royale. Yes they are being released with the opening of Casino Royale in theaters, but you can tell a whole lot of work went into these sets. Definately worth the upgrade, this is the longest running franchise in film history and it continues to deliver quality action entertainment.

This won’t be an in depth review, so I’ll keep this short. And this won’t be much of a review of Bear Grylls as an expert on surviving in the wild. But, I will say these 10 adventures are entertaining, and it shows us parts of the world that aren’t too explored….television wise, that is.

Also, there ARE English subtitles for this season. So, to anybody complaining about the lack of subtitles/closed captions on previous seasons, Discovery does it right with this season. I’m not sure if there are closed captions however, but there are English subtitles only.

Another thing, be prepared, like always, for a strong stomach for at least some of these episodes. Some of what he eats is just awful.

I definitely enjoyed the season. I was hoping that the episode with Will Farrell was going to be in it but to my dismay, i will have to wait for the next season. there was a little bit of stagnancy in the situations Bear had to face. a lot of the situations that were left for him didn’t pan out as unexpected. must say that the bee-sting in the face on the salt pans was a test of endurance. made it through just as the WILDMAN always does. this season is definitely a good addition to the collection.

Rod Steiger’s performance in this film is the best of his career. Period. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, 1965, and should easily have won–although he did not. In this powerful film, he plays Sol Nazerman, a seedy denizen of New York’s Lower East Side who makes his living as a pawnbroker. Into his store come lowlifes of all sorts–hookers, junkies, thieves. Nazerman is a survivor of the Holocaust and carries enormous psychic scars that refuse to stop tearing at his soul.

As a vicious menacing crime figure, Brock Peters is also superb–the present-day reminder to Nazerman of how evil never dies. Other cast members include Geraldine Fitzgerald as a sympathetic caseworker and Jaime Sanchez as Nazerman’s young Latino assistant who is of another generation and another culture, and cannot understand his boss’ terrible anguish.

Director Sidney Lumet has done an outstanding job here conveying the lifelong suffering that horrific evil brings with it. This is not a graphic film, but one that delivers its message before the days of special effects via pure drama. It is a great thing to have this now available on DVD; this is a film that should be seen by those who treasure phenomenal acting and powerful emotion.

Very highly recommended; the best American film of 1965 and one of the best American films of the 20th century.

I saw this film in it’s initial release. Lumet just received an Special Oscar, and this film should be at the top of his list of achievements. Steiger was never better, and Quincy Jones first film score was so very appropriate. The only Oscar recognition was for Rod Steiger’s amazing performance, so complicated and profound…and so very complete. Missing of recognition was Jaime Sanchez’ powerful supporting role, and that of the great Geraldine Fitzgerald, still magnificent after a long hiatus. Also, Brock Peters, after playing the sweet Tom Robinson in “To Kill a Mockingbird”, shows great range as the bad guy.Steiger lost the Oscar to Lee Marvin in “Cat Ballou”. Even though Marvin played dual roles, Jane Fonda was the center of that film. Steiger was in every frame of “The Pawnbroker”. Makes you wonder about the credibility of the Academy, huh? And then there’s Lumet, and those very complicated flashbacks of the Holocaust. Quite powerful. This is the first film score by the great Quincy Jones. It is so appropriate. (He was nominated the following year for “In Cold Blood”). Some say Steiger won the Oscar in ‘67 (”In the Heat of the Night”) because he lost for this one. I think not. This was a period in Steiger’s career when he was in touch with his material. Lumet, Jones and the late Steiger should be proud that this display of greatness is available for all to see.

the action film is carried to a rather intriguing extreme with THE LAST BOY SCOUT, a movie that pushes the world-weary detective stereotype to new, surreal levels. Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis), is a shamus hired by his best friend to protect a stripper who is subsequently killed. her washed-up football playing boyfriend (Damon Wayans) hooks up with Joe to find out whodunit and why. Willis’ performance and Black’s screenplay combine to produce a portrait of a guy who is so down and out that our first glimpse of him is a shot of him passed out in his own car while being harassed by snotty neighbourhood kids. throughout the whole film, Willis delivers deadpanned one-liners while constantly getting the crap kicked out him. BOY SCOUT is a guilty pleasure. it is mindless, formulaic, and particularly hateful towards women (and men as well) in spots with an uncompromisingly un-PC attitude that is very unusual in this day and age… and very funny. action films don’t get any nastier than this one.

Tony Scott’s THE LAST BOY SCOUT may be trash, but for an action flick it is very well-made, highly entertaining trash.

Of course, you could make a very good case against this film. Though I did not find it quite as woman-hating as some of the critics said it was upon the film’s release, I would recognize that there is a subtle layer of misogyny throughout the movie—particularly with the two women characters in Joe Hallenbeck’s life, his uncaring, cheating wife and his bratty, verbally abusive daughter—that might make some viewers more queasy than I was. And, objectively speaking, THE LAST BOY SCOUT is basically a retread of writer Shane Black’s superior LETHAL WEAPON—a more foul-mouthed, ultra-violent retread with a lot of corny humor. This is an all-out testosterone-fest if I’ve ever seen one. If you’ve got a problem with people, just punch ‘em in the “head or gut”—if anything else, that’s the message of this movie. Really, Shane Black, where did your taste go since LETHAL WEAPON and LETHAL WEAPON 2?

Despite all that, though, this movie still delivers what matters most in this genre: thrills and exciting action scenes. Having seen this movie only recently, I must say that it is probably one of the most exciting action pictures I’ve seen in a long while, perhaps enjoyable because of its excesses. Tony Scott definitely knows how to film action scenes well (the climactic action scenes in the football stadium is a good example of his skill here), and of course he brings his customary slick style to the material. And its plot, involving a ruthless attempt to legalize gambling in pro football, takes some kinda intriguing twists and turns along the way. (It’s like a hardcore action-film version of one of those hardboiled detective films of the ’40s.)

In short, THE LAST BOY SCOUT is very trashy but still entertaining action movie that can be quite fun to watch, depending on whether you can overlook lapses of character logic (why on Earth is Shelly Marcone giving away his plan of framing Hallenbeck for Senator Baynad’s murder just so Hallenbeck can outsmart ‘em all?) as well as the more objectionable misogynistic aspects of the film. Personally, I felt a little guilty about enjoying it so much…but not guilty enough not to admit it. Marginally recommended.

The availability of a second collection of films of the charming Alice Faye is welcome. It seems that a new generation are discovering this quality performer and actress and this DVD collection is a worthy valentine to her legacy. Faye’s films tended to follow a proven box office formula. She was quoted in later life as drily stating that they merely rotated her leading men as she constantly remade the same story. These films certainly support that view as all the cliches are on view, each with their own twist.

- first off is the 1939 “Rose of Washington Square”. This is a dramatic musical with a more gutsy part for Faye than usual and an excellent role for matinee idol Tyrone Power as a heel. The story was based on the life of “Funny Girl” Fanny Brice who sued the studio for plagiarism. Al Jolson, as Faye’s vaudeville buddy, and Faye sing superbly. The film was severely edited before release and many of the cut scenes survive, some of which have been included here.

- next, also released in 1939, is the technicolour romantic comedy “Hollywood Cavalcade”. This is a nostalgic look at the coming of talkies, a Reader’s Digest potted history of Hollywood, with Faye’s role based loosely on, among others, Mabel Normand, a silent screen comedian, and Don Ameche on Mack Sennett, a silent comedy director. The film is very well made with soft colouring and excellent performances by the leads but the director Irving Cummings, while meticulous, always directed at a plod. The best scenes are the Keystone Cop comedy recreations, not directed by Cummings, before the films descends into the usual cliches with Faye neglected by her leading man and wearing her heart on her sleeve.

- in 1941, “The Great American Broadcast” adhered rigidly to the girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl reunites with boy formula, this time set around the advent of radio. The plot is a rehash of “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” stirred in with “Tin Pan Alley” with John Payne and Jack Oakie re-appearing from the latter film. While it may be flawed history, it is a mighty entertaining film. Faye’s rendition of the war time Harry Warren lament “Where you are”, backed by the Ink Spots, is memorable and the Nicholas Brothers are in there too, performing a breathtaking dance as usual.

- in 1943, “Hello Frisco Hello”, one of Faye’s best remembered films, was released. A period musical rich in familiar and, in this case, particularly tiresome plot cliches, it benefits from spectacular colour, great production values, superb sound and Faye herself, slim, radiant, warm and sympathetic. This is the film in which she mesmerised the audience with her signature tune “You’ll Never Know”, but there are other goodies like “The Grizzly Bear” and “Pick on me”. John Payne and Jack Oakie are with her for the third time, the former as a very stiff and humorless leading man and the latter for some hokey overacted comedy.

- the inclusion in the set of the lousy war time propaganda film “Four Jills in a Jeep” is hard to fathom, unless you view it as a sort of bonus. This boring musical traces the factual trip by 4 second rate stars to entertain the boys at the front. Most of the musical numbers are dull with wooden Dick Haymes, loud Martha Raye and voluptuous Carole Landis, among others. One highlight is the athletic dancing of Mitzi Mayfair. Faye makes a guest appearance reprising “You’ll Never Know”. She seems reserved.

With all the entertaining films available to include in the package, “Four Jills in Jeep” is a rotten choice. It also should be pointed out that “Hollywood Cavalcade” is not a musical, given that this set is another of Fox’s “Marquee Musicals”. The film certainly has the feel of one with a delightful soundtrack of old favourites supporting the melodrama but Faye does not sing.

The set has been beautifully packaged. All of the prints have been restored and are in great condition and the 2 technicolour prints are outstanding. Every film has its own documentary, not only focusing on Faye and her colleagues but on the historical aspects of the yarns - Fanny Brice for “Rose”, the advent of radio for “Broadcast”, the history of Hollywood for “Cavalcade” and USO tours for “Jills”. Each of the films with Faye as the lead hit a bullseye at the box office. “Frisco” has a charming featurette on Faye herself and her daughter Alice appears, as well as Michael Feinstein and Hugh Hefner among others.

All the usual marketing material is included such as theatrical trailers, on set stills and advertising. In fact my only complaint is that Faye’s exquisite rendition of “I’ll see you in my dreams” is not among the deleted numbers from “Rose”. A colourful booklet comes in the box, devoting 2 pages of anecdotes and background information to each film. This nicely complements the featurettes on each DVD. Lastly, “Rose”, “Jills” and “Frisco” have audio only tracks. You can view the films with the original studio recordings matched carefully to what is on the screen without dialogue interruption etc - a very neat feature.

The DVD set is excellent value and with the documentaries, the modern viewer will begin to understand just what an important star Alice Faye was and that her contribution to American pop music was huge in her heyday.

why in the world include a film in which Alice Faye is a guest star and is on screen less than five minutes with all the starring vehicles she did for Fox? It makes so little sense one suspects that the people putting these sets together are either idiots or just thumbing their nose at fans.

Sally, Irene, and Mary, Wake Up and Live, Sing Baby Sing ,You Can’t Have Everything with Don Ameche and the Ritz Bros. - any of these would be much more valuable releases.Too much to hope that the Fox people read these posts and realize their “mistake”.

Otherwise , this is is a great release with four terrific starring Faye vehicles long wanted by fans on dvd.
