This is a very complex, but understandable crime-violence-COMEDY movie that kept me glued to my TV for the entire time. This movie masterfully combines crime, violence, gore, and comedy into a seamless, amazing movie. The post-production beats the Krap out of ANY $100 million movie, bar none. If you as mighty as acquire a video camera, you will delight in what has been done with this movie. I would say if you are reading this, you like this type of movie. If you do, Assume IT! Trust me when I say you will admire it as considerable as I do.

This is a gripping documentary on the subject of peak oil–a sobering account of our dependence on ancient sunlight to power industrial civilization and the consequences we face as we top over the global oil production peak and enter the irreversible depletion phase. While there are other documentaries that treat the subject, I find Crude Impact notable, among other reasons, for its focus from the outset on the relationship between the size of the human population and the increasingly intensive extraction of resources.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crude Impact! Click Here

I teach a semester-long high school seminar devoted entirely to peak oil and this is the documentary, among other excellent documentaries on this subject, which I have chosen for viewing by my students. Crude Impact is simply the clearest exposition of peak oil and its far-reaching consequences. The impact has been profound.

Interviews with leading experts in a variety of related fields forward the narrative, which is accompanied by arresting images, a judicious use of graphics, and haunting musical score. Indeed the concept of peak oil itself is not fully expanded until later in the documentary after an array economic, political, social, and economic threads are systematically explored–and the full impact of peak oil then becomes frighteningly clear.

If you are new to the notion of peak oil, this is a must view which should be shared with relatives and friends. In fact, it should be shared with everyone, even those already “peak oil aware,” which I fear is all too few. Crude Impact is an impressive, if deeply disturbing, documentary.

I was at the screening when the film premiered on IDFA 2 years ago. The entire audience came out after the screening, to continue discussing the matter with the director in the hallway for another hour. I’ve never seen people so moved by an environmental film, and motivated to spread it’s message. Truely a must see

Yes, I thought the first Michael Bay Transformers was bad. I wasn’t expecting the sequel to be much better, but in the back of my mind I was hoping. Michael Bay apparently decided there wasn’t enough crass humor, overt sexuality, poor character development, useless moving parts, explosions, and nameless robots transforming into formless metallic amoebas in the first movie. So now there is more of all that in this one. Of course, it doesn’t make the movie better, just longer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen! Click Here

Negatives:

1) The twins. I don’t think I need to explain this.

2) Sam’s parents, excessive comic relief, no importance to the story.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen! Click Here

3) Mikaela and the Decepticon fem-bot. Ok, I’m a male, yes I think Meghan Fox is hot. I personally, do not mind seeing her wearing skimpy revealing clothes. But come on, give her some depth. First of all, this movie is being used to sell toys to 6-year-olds. There is no need for such overt female objectification in this movie. Seriously, she spends most of the movie with that pouty expression and posing seductively, instead of acting. Same complaint with the “fem-bot”, I felt it was completely unnecessary to the story.

4) Everyone is comic relief. Ok, I’m all for comic relief in action movies. But seriously, you can’t build an action movie around an entire cast of comedians. More than 3 comic relief characters, and you should call it “Giant Robot Movie” (ie. Scary Movie series).

5) Visual effects. Sometimes less is more. The robots are too complex, too many moving parts. It is very hard to follow the action trying to follow these overly detailed monochromatic machines as they fly through cities causing random destruction everywhere. In the original cartoon, the simpler designs were easier to identify and they were distinctively color-coded. Most of the Decepticons look the same.

6) There are no rules. Basically, Michael Bay is telling us that alien robots can do whatever they please. They can change their alt-forms at will or become giant robo-amoebas. If you hack them to pieces, each part can become a completely new Transformer. Robots can transform into people. Mechanical devices can turn into dust, communicate telepathically with humans, then reform themselves from said dust and resurrect dead Transformers. And other mechanical devices or even a tiny piece of them can turn earth machines into robots (complete with machine-guns) or resurrect Transformers.

7) Questionable motivations on both sides. So at the end of episode 1, this autobot declared he would stay with Sam forever and ever. Ah, how touching. Now Sam decides to go to college and he won’t take Bumblebee with him. What a jerk. He saved the world once, but now Optimus Prime asks for his help to do it again, and college is more important. Why does Sam give the All-Spark sliver to his unrealistically hot girlfriend for safe-keeping, instead of Bumblebee, Optimus or any of those government guys? Why do the Decepticons want to destroy the sun? I mean really, Cybertron is supposedly destroyed, do they have another planet to inhabit once this solar system is wiped out?

Positives:

1) Peter Cullen and Frank Welker

2) Explosions

Neutral:

1) The battle with Optimus Prime in the woods was really cool, but it didn’t have nearly the emotional impact of the animated movie from the 80’s because it was decided early on that they could just resurrect him before the end of the movie. And with no “Hot Rod” character, Sam’s episode of feeling guilty seemed pretty shallow.

All in all, a terrible movie from a critical point of view. People will like the movie if they are a big fan of loud booms and not optional things like story. I feel guilty spending money on this disaster, though.

Okay. Let me get this straight. If there was a right to refund law if you didn’t like a film, I would take EVERY SINGLE PENNY I SPENT ON THIS AWFUL MOVIE. Oh yeah, the CGI was astonishing, but everything else you can flush down the toilet!!! The plot sucked, sexual humor was waaaaay to much, and cursing! The cursing made me feel like I was watching an R rated movie!!!!! There were 2 F bombs in this film I believe. Very intolerable for a kids movie. Not even Star Trek (2009) had the F bomb. (Well in the front with the Beastie Boys song) But it was barley noticeable! I didn’t even hear it. I went by myself to watch this at the theaters, and I heard one of the mothers of 3 kids complaining it was a very immature movie.

Shame on Micheal Bay, for making such a crappy film, with such crappy actors, and a crappy plot.

To me, Star Trek totally owned this film for this year.

In conclusion, I will not spend anymore money for this movie, even if I could spend 1 dollar at Redbox to rent it.

I went into this one thinking, “Well, I like vampire stuff but it kinda looks like a chick anime.” I’m happy to report it’s much more.Sure, the main character and her companions are Japanese school girls, but this doesn’t stop Miyu from battling a unique and very cool new demon each episode. And as for Miyu herself, she’s a regular hottie with a cool background. Her grimk reaper inspired servant Lava just about steals the show however. Now, although I heard the next dvd’s (which I plan to buy asap) were done ok, this one has all kinds of flaws. They omit the opening/closing music on 2 of the 3 episodes (although its not that great anyway). There are NO chapter breaks, just three tracks, one per episode. There are NO extras. The subtitling omits onscreen japanese words and song lyrics. But these flaws on the part of the dvd are overshadowed by suprisingly cool content. Thanks TokyoPop!

The Vampire Princess Miyu TV series features Miyu and Larva from the OAV series, but with some differences. At 26 episdoes, there is ample time for character development, providing an alternate background story for both Miyu and Larva. Beginning with Episode 2, the location of action shifts from Kyoto to Tokyo, where Miyu befriends (rather, is befriended by) three classmates in an all-girl school, yet she must keep her true identity and purpose from her friends. Also, Miyu’s rival appears occasionally throughout the series, adding another element of intrigue. Most episodes follow a “shinma of the week” format, each with different abilities and most also receiving great character development.

Those who enjoyed the Vampire Princess Miyu OAV series will absolutely LOVE the TV series!!!!! While not necessarily as dark as the OAV series, the improved character development and additional character interactions are a great treat. The music is superb, simultaneously haunting and enchanting. Overall, the entire TV series - and each individual episode - is anime at its best!!!

Wow I can’t believe how disappointed I was with this movie. I thought, since it was National Geographic, that it would just be educational with footage of fish. There is of course a lot of fish footage, but the music that accompanies it is so awful, I almost can’t stand to listen to it. There are numerous songs about being a fish, water, etc. If it was just instrumental, that would be wonderful, but the songs trying to be catchy and hip, but the writers somehow failed and every time I hear another song come on, I cringe. There is an animated globe named Spin that has some really lame jokes, but also some educational narration. I guess my 20 month old son enjoys the movie ok, but usually gets bored after 15 minutes. I should have gotten something else, this just was not really what I was looking for.

Kids really seem to enjoy this one. As a foster parent, I see that a lot of the kids that come into my home lack the ability to sit and concentrate on anything. But this video seems to hold the attention of most of them. I’ve had a couple boys that were more interested in going out to play soccer in the yard than to watch television, but for the rest: they loved it. They sat with rapt attention. The sea creatures ares so colorful and different and the video throws in scenes that makes them laugh. For example, there is one scene where a big waves splashes a man and when the waves pulls away you can see him tugging his shorts up and you see just the tiniest bit of his […] and the kids think that is so funny (’cause that sort of thing happens to every kids once in a while and they can relate). The video shows such interesting creatures that it really opens up a whole new world to many children - a world hey never knew existed. Also, the songs in the movie are really catchy.

A Fistful of Dollars is truly one of the big classics in the western genre and one that began a newer, better style of western films. First in a string of Clint Eastwood’s “spaghetti” westerns, it has a style and cinematic class all to itself. This is where Clint Eastwood began his style of western hero who doesn’t say much, but gets his point across through his facial expressions and of course his actions, more specifically with his six shooter at his side.

The premise:

Clint Eastwood plays “the man with no name” other than the name given to him by one of the characters in the film, Joe. In what is now a classic style, he rides into town on a mule and witnesses the brutality of the town bullies. Without saying a word to them, they harass him and he calmly goes into one of the town bars, has some food and listens to what the bar owner has to tell him about the town’s situation. He casually decides to stay and do something about the entire situation, walks out and takes out four of the bad guys. What follows from there is such an outstanding film that is fraught with a certain degree of humor as he deftly plays both sides against his middle and walks away with “A Fistful of Dollars.”

If you’re a fan of the western genre and haven’t seen this classic, I highly suggest you pick this DVD up. Some might be put off by the age of this movie, that is simply not the case though as this movie is timeless. Despite the fact that it was made in Spain, with many European actors and in a foreign language, it’s just pure fun!

The DVD:

Given today’s almighty DVD’s where there is every sort of special/extra feature that a fan can imagine, this one is your meat and potato’s kind. It has the movie, a great theatrical trailer and a booklet. It is nice and simple, with not too much to get wrapped around other than the outstanding movie within. The booklet is an extremely interesting read, giving some facts for the movie I wasn’t aware of. {ssintrepid}

Astonishing remake of Akira Kurosawa’s YOJIMBO, FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, directed by italian director Sergio Leone, deserves to be in every movie lover’s library. In Toshiro Mifune’s role, Clint Eastwood gave a performance that established him as one of the greatest american star of the next forty years.

With an international cast of german, italian, spanish and american actors, FISTFUL OF DOLLARS could have been only an ordinary B-movie of the early 60’s. On the contrary, this movie has become the symbol of the revival of a dying Hollywood genre - the western - and will be followed by dozens of imitations until the definitive burial of the genre by Clint Eastwood with the masterpiece UNFORGIVEN.

The villain, played by Gian-Maria Volontè, is so terrific that Sergio Leone will hire this wonderful italian actor to play the role of Indio, the bad guy of FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, with the result we all know.

I was a little bit anxious before playing the DVD ; the bad quality of the image of FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE was still on my mind. But, don’t worry - be happy, the copy was in almost perfect state and the transfer well done. Subtitles and a trailer as bonus features.

A DVD for your library.

I’ve noticed all of the reviews mainly focus on the season itself and not the essentials of the whether the blu-ray transfer of this season was good or not. So I’ve decided to add my two cents in. And remember everyone we are all entitled to our opinions so feel free to disagree. O.K. First of all I think season 7 was pretty good. I would give it 4 stars overall. It was better than the mess of season 6 and came close to the greatness of season 5. Of course nothing has come close yet to season 2 in my opinion. That was the standard that will be used to measure all action series for years to come. Anyway, yes there were some uneven moments and plot holes this season at times but when you look at the big picture after watching the entire show the writers explained it well enough to satisfy my curiosity. The acting was great as usual with plenty of new characters getting a chance to flex their muscles and of course Jack barking his way through the day as usual. I liked the dialogue between him and agent Renee Walker and how Jack finds some of his humanity in the process by the time the show draws to an end but Renee ends up somewhat losing her’s. Those who have seen the finale know what I mean. And I can’t say enough about Jon Voight. His acting was superb. I felt the show really hit a new gear when he took center stage as the main enemy. And yes there are a few moments where the story will make you scratch your head but in the end the writers do a good job of tying everything up and entertaining you in the process. For example, who cares why Jack is fighting someone when you get to see him kill a guy with a screwdriver through the chest and then use that same screwdriver to start-up a truck. A true classic Jack Bauer moment :) You’ll even get to see Kim become a mini jack near the end. Overall a satisfying season that did more things right than it did wrong.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 24: Season Seven! Click Here

Now on to the transfer. This is where my 3 star review comes into play. The blu-ray version is only slightly above the standard edition in picture quality in my opinion. On several occasions I noticed grain and bland or washed out colors. The blacks and grays were decent but didn’t have that pop that I know blu-ray can produce. However, on a few scenes the picture quality was noticeable better than at other times. It seemed almost that fox didn’t have their high def cameras working right on some of the episodes. Overall I would give the picture quality between a 7 and 8. The audio also is not quite what I was hoping. The dts master audio mix is a definite step up from dolby digital but for a show like 24 I was surprised that my system didn’t get a better workout than it did. The audio mix is extremely front channel heavy with very little going on with your surrounds. This is a real missed opportunity on the part of fox since something is always going on behind the scenes with each set on 24. I wanted to hear the conversations and computer analysts typing away in the background with fbi headquarters or the grinding of hydraulics in the background as Jack and company stake out the loading docks. I just didn’t hear any of that. And I feel that my ht is a pretty good set up (cost me about $3000) so I know that the mix could have been so much better. As a contrast I just finished watching Taken on blu and that was a audio mix done right. Anyway if I had known the mix would end up being so front channel heavy and the picture quality not popping as much as I had hoped I would have just went with standard def. Of course to each his or her own.

Like most fans, I was disappointed in Season 6, but willing to give 24 another try based on its past greatness. Season 7 surpassed my expectations.

While 24 is an action show, its best moments for me are the pivotal ones in the lives of the characters we care about so much, especially Jack. (Like, in Season 2 Jack talking with Kim while flying the plane, then Mason showing up and talking to Jack about what Jack should really be doing with his life; or, in Season 3, Jack and Nina’s final confrontation; or in Season 5, our last visit with David Palmer.) There are several such memorable moments in Season 7.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 24: Season Seven! Click Here

This season benefits from a great cast, including some returning favorite characters (Tony, Chloe, Agent Pierce, and a couple others) and some great new ones (FBI Agent Renee Walker, super talented & resourceful and a possible love interest for Jack in Season 8 - if he lives that long), and uber bad guy Jonas Hodges, played to a tee by Jon Voight.

Season 7 borrows the more successful plot elements from previous seasons, and does them well in a new context. Jack, once again, is working on the outside, with the help of Chloe on the inside. Jack, once again, must infiltrate a group of bad guys by pretending to be one of them, and must pretend to kill someone he - and we - care about to convince them of his loyalties. There’s a well-placed mole, feeding intel to the bad guys and keeping them a step ahead of our hero. There’s a Sherrie Palmer-like character in the President’s daughter, and, finally, once again, a President with principles - like David Palmer.

I am hoping the writers try some different plot elements next year instead of rehashing the same formula. Stop making Jack prove he’s a good guy - sheesh, he’s saved the world 6 or 7 times over, you’d think people would have learned by now. Give him some real resources and the unconditional faith of the leaders he serves.

But, after the disappointing Season 6, the writers did a fantastic job, and Season 7 brings the comforting feeling of the old 24 magic. Most fans, I think, will easily forgive the writers for reusing some past plot points. And while not all seasons of 24 portray their villains as 3-dimensional characters with plausible motivations, Season 7 gives us a nicely fleshed out villain in Jonas Hodges, and another guy who’s pretty bad reveals his true motivations to Jack in Episode 24, and it’s pretty plausible and satisfying.

In the end, despite the terrorist threats to the nation, and all the great action and stunts and car crashes, Season 7 is more intimate - it’s about Jack facing his demons and about other characters we’ve long known dealing with theirs. And as a bonus (I hope this isn’t too much of a spoiler), Kim’s reappearance sets things right with fans - she doesn’t wind up in any cougar traps - far from it - and she makes a positive contribution when it counts most. In my view, everything wraps up perfectly in Episode 24. The writers don’t explicitly show the actual resolution to certain things, like what Renee is about to do when we last see her, or what will happen after the very final scene. But they show enough to make it clear how things turn out. And it is very satisfying.

If you have not seen 24 Season 7 yet, I envy you for the treat you’re in store for.

Fullmetal Alchemist is an amazing series, but one of its greatest achievements, in my mind, is that it managed to not only maintain its stellar quality over time, it consistently got better and better until it actually hurt to see the series come to an end. Seeing all of the plot threads that have been building throughout the whole series coming to fruition is a great payoff, sure, but it’s made all the better by the fact that nothing feels like a cop-out; there wasn’t a single moment where I thought “Oh, these guys were running out of time and so they just threw that up there.” No, everything flows to a logical, incredibly satisfying and poignantly melancholy conclusion. It certainly isn’t a Hollywood-style happy ending, but that was never what the series was about in the first place. And even more gratifying than the ending was being able to look back on how all of these characters had grown and changed throughout the series: Lust springs to mind first and foremost, having gone from being your stereotypical femme-fatale to a multi-layered, incredibly sympathetic and tragic heroine. And I never, ever thought I’d be able to empathize with a psychopathic monster like Envy, but the final scenes of episode 50 made me come really close to doing so, even as he… well, I won’t spoil it for you here.

In short, Fullmetal Alchemist is an incredibly well done, superbly animated and acted show. The Japanese and English voice tracks are both equally impressive (one of the RARE few animes in which this has happened, the only other to my knowledge being Samurai Champloo). And sure, if you’re reading this product description you’re probably going to buy this anyway and you’ve seen the series before, but in case you haven’t, just know that you’re about to see some of the finest episodes of one of the best anime series ever. This world definitely goes out with a bang, and not a whimper.

I purchased the whole series and the movies. The only problem with it is that there weren’t more episodes. It is the perfect blend of suspense, fantasy, adventure, drama, love, sacrifice, dedication, suffering, reward, deception, cruelty, compassion, etc…__I was surprised at the depth of this anime. Even grown ups will like this one.

For some reason The Sound Of Music has never had any luck in home video release. It has never achieved the picture quality commensurate with its status. The 40th Anniversary Edition seemed like the opportunity for it to finally shine. Alas no. Yes it is a marked improvement over the previous DVD which image-wise was deplorable. But it is far below what we know is possible in film restoration today.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Sound of Music! Click Here

What’s good about the new SoM transfer? Well for starters they’ve removed the much criticised electronic edge enhancement which infuriated so many people in the previous DVD. This is artificial sharpening which looks good on small screens but produces halos around objects when seen on larger displays. The result is a slightly softer image but definitely an improvement over the old DVD. And they’ve made some effort at restoration. The picture looks visibly brighter. The color timing which was way off in the previous DVD has been partially corrected - but not totally. Skin tones which looked overly red previously, now appear closer to normal. However this color correction is haphazard. Some scenes have skin tones looking very natural, others still have that ruddy, sun-burnt look. The night scenes especially have skin tones taking on an ugly muddy-red appearance. In short, the color timing for the new DVD is inconsistent. Ironically, one drawback of the present color-correction is an overly-accurate representation of the original colors in some scenes - in the Edelweiss reprise at the Salzburg Folk Festival, Angela Cartwright’s face (Brigitta) takes on a faint greenish-yellow hue under the stagelight. In the previous DVD this had been corrected to give everyone a uniform pink glow but not in the present DVD. It may be a truer reflection of stagelighting but it is not at all pretty to look at. So in terms of color-correction, in trying to please everyone, the technicians ended up pleasing no one. Black levels however are spot on. Level of detail is also fairly good, especially shadow detail in the darker scenes, definitely better than in the previous DVD but again below what we’ve come to expect of DVD transfers on the cusp of the Hi-Def era. This is especially so considering that SoM was shot, not on 35mm film like other movies, but on 70mm which should, if properly handled, enable us to see detail that would eclipse the very latest Hollywood productions, almost all of which are shot in 35mm today. Sadly it does not.

Sound-wise, the THX Certified 4.1 Surround Sound of the previous DVD has been replaced by a 5.0 Surround. Note the loss of the .1 LFE (subwoofer). This won’t make much difference as SoM does not make much use of the LFE channel but those using less expensive sound systems may end up losing the lower-most frequencies as the front speakers of these systems often cannot reproduce the lowest frequencies that will now be passed on to them. One also wonders why they did not use all 6 channels of the original Todd-AO soundtrack for this DVD. To find out in the Extras that they actually remixed the original 6 track audio into a new DTS soundtrack which we are not given here is only to add insult to injury. Apparently Fox is reserving the DTS soundtrack for its upcoming High-Definition version of SoM due out next year.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Sound of Music! Click Here

The selling point of this 40th Anniversary Edition must be the Extras of which there are tonnes. What I appreciate most in the current set of Rodgers & Hammerstein Anniversary releases is the inclusion of a separate songs-only chapter list. I hope this becomes a feature for all future musicals. An interesting curiosity in this DVD is the ability to hear and sing along with the film in both French and Spanish with the appropriate lyrics appearing beneath much like in a karaoke-singalong. Although the French soundtrack was already present previously, this is the first time I’ve heard the songs sung in Spanish. There are hours of documentaries. I especially liked Charmian Carr’s new documentary “On Location with The Sound of Music,” and the children’s reunion, “From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion,” where the now grown-up children reminisce about their time on the set and point out all the little bloopers they made onscreen. It’s heartening to learn that they’ve all turned out very well indeed. Unfortunately with all the new Extras, some of the features from the previous DVD had to be dumped. By far the saddest loss was the exclusion of Charmian Carr’s delightful 1967 documentary “Salzburg Sight and Sound”.

The Sound Of Music underwent a complete restoration in 2002 for its inclusion in the Academy Film Archive (A.M.P.A.S.). That 65mm restored print was first exhibited in early 2003. From the Film-to-Video restoration comparison included among the Extras, it would seem that this is the restoration used in the DVD. However it also shows how much more muted the colors on the film elements were even after restoration. It is only after the video transfer and color correction that the colors come to resemble what is seen here. The telecine color-timer was obviously over-enthusiastic with the color correction, pumping the colors up beyond what is natural.

For those contemplating getting the 40th Anniversary Edition, do note that Fox has announced that The Sound Of Music will be re-released next year on its new Blu-Ray High-Definition DVD. That’s where the new restoration will re-emerge, hopefully with a more accurate telecine transfer and the newly remixed DTS soundtrack. If you can, it may be wiser to wait for the next incarnation of this beloved classic and hope that Fox finally gets things right.

Reviled by some, beloved by many, consistently referred to as the most popular movie musical ever made, THE SOUND OF MUSIC more than fulfills the promise of its beautiful visuals and expert song numbers on home video via DVD. This edition tops the 1995 laserdisc by allowing the sparkling, exemplary design of its 70mm. Todd-AO frame to be exhibited with increased sharpness and resolution. The 4.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack is powerful and clean, but since this film was originally mixed for six-track magnetic stereo, it’s curious why the effort wasn’t made by Fox to split the surrounds! Nonethless, the film sounds terrific. The extra features make this package a bargain at the price. Full length commentary by director Bob Wise, with the musical numbers presented sans vocals, is a great touch. And the two documentaries are beautifully presented; full of facts and bits of arcane information that any fan will truly enjoy. A great movie, and a great DVD rendition. More like this, PLEASE!
