There’s nothing too complicated about the set. A rich American businessman played by Jack Lemmon has to beget a sudden scurry to Italy to claim the body of his father who was killed in an auto accident. He meets a young English woman, played by Juliet Mills, who has advance to Italy to claim the body of her mother who, it turns out, died with Lemmon’s father. It seems that these two were in the midst of their annual month long tryst. For many years they had been meeting at exactly the same date at exactly the same Italian resort for what was obviously their raison d’etre.

Strait-laced Lemmon is shrinking that his father could possibly behave in such a manner. Life loving Mills is thrilled that her mother had found appreciate and happiness. The rest of the situation consists of the complications of dealing with Italian bureaucracy and the evolution of Lemmon’s character from icy efficient American businessman to a warm loving human being. Mills has “unbiased a bit” to do with these changes in Lemmon.

There was a running gag throughout the movie that exactly reflected my hold experiences in Italy. The morgue was closed until 4:00 because it was lunch time. There were no taxis because it was lunch time. A helicopter was told not to land at a local airport because it was lunch time. In my believe experience, when attempting to cash some travelers’ checks in Rome, I was made to wait at a bank window for over 30 minutes while the cashier finished his sandwich and looked at a newspaper. No, no other window cashed travelers’ checks and yes, he’d seize care of me when he was ready, but he wasn’t ready yet. I contemplate that the feeling of “been there, done that” really added to my enjoyment of AVANTI, and the jokes built around the Italian inefficiencies did a lot to execute the atmosphere of the whole movie.

You don’t have to have been there, however, to relish this movie. It’s warm and amusing on its beget. Lemmon and Mills seem destined for one another, and the hotel manager, played by Clive Revill, who is obviously in admire with cherish, adds another dimension of humor. No spacious drama, but loving good-natured comedy is what you can inquire of from AVANTI.

Accidently caught this tedious night movie while channel surfing in a hotel room on a freezing London night far from home and nursing a frosty.I was enchanted as I’d never heard of it.Jack Lemmon as Wendell Armbruster and Juliet Mills as Pamela Pigott give convincing portrayals of a millionaire american and a working class englishwoman arrive to Italy to retrieve the bodies of his father and her mother, who unknown to their families had been lovers for years and had died tragically together in a car accident.Jack Lemmon displays his acumen for comedy without even trying and miss Mills gives an understated performance. But kudos must go to the person who cast Clive Reville in the portion of Carlucci the indispensible hotel manager. When he blurts out ‘idiota’ to an incompetent underling in absolute frustration its an absolute delight. It was a while before I realized he wasnt neapolitan. What a pity his talents have not been more recognized.I would also commend the melodic theme music arranged by Mr Rustichelli. The ending was not a complete surprise but fitting all the same. Please rent this one out all you romance lovers, you will not be disappointed, …as for my wintry,lo and leer the next morning it was gone!,silly that…

Of the three volumes of the uncut Japanese version of this fantastic series, this is the worst one. I say this with some hesitation, because it does include some of my favorite episodes in the series, namely 24 and 25, which are the cliffhanger conclusion to the first season and which represented the end of Teknoman’s run on UPN. However, many of the episodes that follow this climax are somewhat weak, falling into the “situation of the week” format rather than the strong narrative which pervades the rest of the series. It is nice to gain some insight into the other characters, especially in Noal’s poignant back story, but some of the episodes are just kind of boring. Nevertheless, this volume does end on a high point with Balzac’s rejoining the team, which sets things up for the vastly more consistent and exciting third volume. One other thing bringing this volume down is the lack of any decent extras; since there are three OAV shorts that accompany the series (Twin Blood, Burning Clock, and Missing Link), one would expect at least one of these to show up on this volume, but the only thing we get is the stock footage reel (which has some funny moments, but is mostly a novelty). Still, it’s hard to bash a series of this quality, so I give this 4 and a half stars.

A wonderful addition to any Bob the Builder collection. At a price like this you just can’t refuse. These dvds usually sell at no less than $12.99 each. You will find no better value than this!

The 3rd installment for Ergo Proxy is probably the most thought provoking volume yet. Episode 9, which focuses soley on Vincent again, sees him finally realise what he is, a Proxy. Episode 10 reveals that Re-L is infact still alive (there is more to this then we know so far, however) and has her and Iggy leave Romdo in search of Vincent once again. Episode 11 is extremely thought consuming and shows Vincent going through self doubt and realization on the current matters. The real gem here though, is episode 12… Re-L catches up to Vincent and he expresses his feelings for her. She witnesses him transform into the Proxy and now knows the truth about everything thats happened thus far. The cliffhanger is the hinting of Iggy being infected with the kogito virus and as of now it is unclear how this has affected him.. But something tells me its for the worst.

Ergo Proxy continues to grab my attention with its complicated and moving plot. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

I find it kind of difficult to review just a certain volume of a series when my review should be based on the entire collection. If you want to buy into this series would you start with the third volume? What you should be doing is going back and reading reviews for the first volume. Believe me, you’re going to want this series. You are going to be hooked from the very first episode. There were a couple of times where I was left scratching my head up until this third volume. Now I am really grasping the story and I am absolutely loving it. Just like me you are going to want to jump right into the next installment…too bad we need to wait for release dates.

Apparently the survival experts have spoken and MAN VS WILD = SUPERMEGA FAKE. That’s alright with me; I am an idiot who enjoys “dumbed down” productions such as Man vs. Wild moreso than I enjoy watching Survivorman, a show in which the adventurer (i.e. Les) sits around a campfire for 7 days while he plays his harmonica and does nothing else. Survivor experts are we???…yeah…ok. I guess Surviorman is one who brings the excitement of hiking to the screen-he walks to a spot, camps in a spot and does not move.

Bear Grylls (or should I say the infamous Ed…) may camp in “hotels,” he may eat pieces of steak instead of badgers, he may jump through sheets of ice into a secretly hidden hot-tub beneath the surface of a “frozen lake,” he may even use “smoke machines” to simulate the gaseous, boiling properties of lava, but he nevertheless is more of a survival expert than you and me. Any man or woman who goes into nature and puts his/herself into situations in which he/she shows inexperienced outdoorsman how to escape quicksand, animal threats, etc. has my respect. I suppose the beetle grubs he eats are fake as well…. After using these techniques he displayed for creating compasses, building camps, and even learning of the different types of insects and plants that are edible in regions I myself have visited (i.e. the Moab desert and the Badlands), there is no doubt in my mind that the things he teaches are relevant and useful. While he may not camp through the entire night or eat every single disgusting insect/animal upon which he appears to dine, he nevertheless shows people what to do in moments of emergency.

I have faith in Bear/Ed, his camera crew, and the survival experts with whom he explores. While I do not doubt that some things are staged (i.e. the disclaimer at the beginning of the show states this), there is no way one can completely discount the show, even if that SURVIVAL EXPERT does not agree with the techniques he employs. Further, I have a hard time believing that the Discovery Channel would allow a show to air on their TV station that bore absolutely NO truth and applicability. That is simply ignorant. Bear Grylls is a genius and he should not have to suffer verbal abuse from naysaying simpletons.

Norman Rockwell: An American Portrait is a solidly researched and splendidly presented DVD documentary of Norman Rockwell, the American artist whose timeless caricatures became immortalized in more than 300 covers of the Saturday Evening Post — among countless other works. The rich depths of his art (portraying all the moods and facets of humanity including success and failure alike), as well as the life and career of the man himself, are informatively and authoritatively covered in this simply outstanding presentation which originally aired as a PBS special. An excellent and very highly recommended celebration of a great artist’s life and legacy, including additional features such as an art gallery and music selections from T. K. Blue and Nigel Clark, Norman Rockwell: An American Portrait is a full color, 60 minute DVD which would enhance any personal, school, or community collection.

Norman Rockwell has always been one of my favorite artists. This PBS documentary is very well done.

From still shots of his portraits, to interviews with the people that new Rockwell best, (including his assistant, and fellow art schoolmates) you really get a feel for the wonderful artist.

Norman Rockwell wasn’t just a painter, he was a very gifted story teller. Each of his painting told a story, or at least made you think of one as you viewed it.

To sum up Rockwell in just one word, it would have to be “America”. He truly had his finger on the pulse of the every changing times, then skewed them into a world he wanted to live in.

There is great behind the scenes footage of Rockwell working away.

Top notch narration by Mason Adams (Think “With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good).

Erma Bombeck also gives her opinion of selected Rockwell works, as well as the man himself.

If you are a fan of Rockwell this is a must see.

Happy Watching!

Caine, a Chinese-American immigrant, conflicts with a violent 1870’s American West as he seeks a way of peace. The conflict that he feels within himself as a peaceful man who practices martial arts is portrayed excellently. The flashbacks that he has of conversations and lessons in a Shaolin temple are a glimpse into another world. An outstanding series.

“Kung Fu” catapulted actor David Carradine to fame. He didn’t even know it because he didn’t have a TV and was living in what he describes as a “shack” (my guess is a very nice one) in Southern California according to the commentary track on “The Well”. The classic 70’s TV series had an impact on many kids (including this one) when it aired giving us our first taste of Kung Fu, eastern philosphy set in the wild west.

Carradine plays Cane a half Chinese Shaolin priest searching for his half brother Danny in America. On the run when he causes the death of a member of the royal Chinese court, Cane has a bounty on his head. The second season consists of 23 episodes and is presented in its original 1.33:1 full screen format (unlike season one which was cropped for a widescreen format of 1.78:1). The image quality is exceptionally crisp and clear with solid blacks and exceptionally good color given the fact that the series is over 30 years old. The images have been cleaned up and there’s little in the way of dirt and hair to mar the images. The sophisticated storytelling in every episode feature a plot involving Cane as a man contrasted to Cane being trained at the Shaolin temple by his teachers. This unusual use of flashbacks as a “subplot” enriched and made the series unusual and memorable. This device hasn’t been used in a series since and, while it could easily have become a gimmick, most of the writers and directors used it to compliment the more modern stories they were telling. With stunning cinematography and sharp direction that frequently used unusual camera angles, “Kung Fu” sadly only lasted three seasons (Carradine left when it became successful to pursue a film career).

The extras are particularly fun. We get rambling but fascinating commentaries from Carradine on two episodes; “The Well” where Cane drinks contaminated water and must be nursed back to health by an African-American family and “A Dream Within a Dream” in which Cane discovers a body in a marsh. When the body mysteriously disappears, the tension escalates in the town. Carradine relates a number of interesting stories including his habit of NOT reading the script (he would study it just before he needed to do his scenes learning the lines and picking up a general idea of the plot). Carradine claims that this helped foster the idea that the foreign Cane couldn’t understand the culture or what was truly going on around him a lot of the time. Carradine also points out that only two directors in three years ever figured out he was doing this (although I suspect he probably did read the two hour pilot).

The only extra is a great featurette wittily entitled “Now and Zen” where Carradine has a dinner with friends from the series and castmates from “Kill Bill”. They discuss the series, the character and the impact “Kung Fu” had in its day. We also get hear from Kam Yuen one of the technical advisors on the show and Radames Pera the man who played Cane as a child in the flashback episodes of the series.

Kudos to Warner Brothers for returning the series to its original format and for doing a great job of delivering this classic series. Unlike many companies (are you listening Universal?)that put out series as so much “product” a lot of care went into putting this set together. A note about the packaging. The package designer Paul Lanner did, indeed, spell the title of the the cenotaph correctly but it was changed without his consent for the domestic release. While I’m not a fan of the two sided dual layer discs (we have 23 episodes spread over four discs as a result) because they can easily get damaged or scratched, the exceptional package design works well at protecting the discs and providing key info on each individual episodes.

At the age of 7, Heidi Bub was airshipped to the United States when her mother, a Vietnamese woman, gave her up for adoption. Heidi was Amerasian, a result of a relationship between her mother and a US soldier. Heidi was adopted by a single Southern woman (with whom she is estranged), and grows up with a charming drawl and rather American attitudes. Nevertheless, she wants to find her birth mother. This documentary is about Heidi’s reunion with her Vietnamese family. You’ve probably seen long-lost adoption reunions on the news magazines, that end in happy tears and a ‘new family.’ This is not one of those reunions.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Daughter From Danang! Click Here

The documentary eventually turns so depressing that a number of ambiguous questions come up. Was it fair for the filmmakers to even reunite Heidi with her family? What are the intentions of Heidi’s Vietnamese family? Is Heidi simply heartless, or does her Vietnamese family ask for too much? Does her birth mother even “deserve” anything, considering she abandoned Heidi?

The film-makers maintain a nonjudgemental attitude throughout the film. Nevertheless, several things are striking. One is the utter poverty of rural Vietnam. Heidi’s family at times seems greedy and grasping, but look at their living conditions, and you can understand why. Heidi also seems to possess some of the worst “American” traits: a superficial friendliness coupled by profound aloofness. Heidi’s mother is the saddest figure of the film, a woman who is haunted by a series of misguided choices in her life. Just the look on her face as she realizes that she’s lost her daughter not once, but twice, is heartbreaking.

No matter what “side” you take in this difficult, depressing film, the ending is chilling. One of the recurring themes of the film is Heidi’s soft, cherubic face and her sweet, honey-voiced drawl. At the end of the film, all of that is still there, but her words are so ice-cold that you wonder if the continuing fad of adopting foreign children (first from Vietnam, now from Korea, China, or Romania) does more harm than good. “I don’t know them,” Heidi says of her Vietnamese relatives. But we, the viewers, do know them, and when Heidi says, “I’ve closed the door on them, but I haven’t locked it,” I found myself desperately hoping that one day, she’d open the door again.

Heidi is married to a junior American naval officer and living in military housing on a U.S. naval base with their two young children. But, in 1975, Heidi was Hiep, the 7-year old daughter of Mai Thi Kim, a poor Vietnamese woman living in Danang while her husband was off fighting with the Viet Cong. Hiep’s biologic father was an American serviceman, with whom Kim had a relationship in order to keep food on her large family’s table. When the U.S. forces scurried for home, they took several thousand children of mixed parentage, including Hiep, with them for adoption in the States in Operation Babylift . Hiep was raised in Pulaski, TN as Heidi by a single mother, who convinced the girl to bury her heritage and grow up American. Now, years later, Heidi wishes to discover the identity of her birth mother, much to her foster mother’s horror and eventual estrangement. With the help of the original adoption agency, Heidi locates her long-lost family. DAUGHTER FROM DANANG follows Heidi as she travels to Vietnam in 1997 with a Vietnamese social worker, gifts, and good intentions to meet her birth mother and half-siblings.

What starts out as an emotional and poignant reunion between Heidi and Kim slides steadily downhill as cultures collide and the collateral damage mounts. As Kim cloyingly attaches herself to her daughter’s every movement, one can see troubles ahead. I was irritated that Heidi’s Vietnamese travel companion/interpreter apparently didn’t give her a clue as to the responsibilities inherent to Vietnamese familial ties, and what might be expected of a perceived-to-be-rich American. By the end of the film, the viewer can only feel profound sympathy for all involved, especially as the initial expectations were so extravagantly high.

The history of Kim’s family during the Vietnam War is nicely fleshed out with general archival footage of the time and place, e.g. VC on the march, American troops interacting with the locals, the South Vietnamese panic during the U.S. withdrawal, the victorious North Vietnamese forces.

Most of the documentary is comprised of interviews with both Kim and Heidi, as well as a visual record of Heidi’s one-week interactive visit to her homeland. The repercussions of Heidi’s brief sojourn in the Old Country are emphasized by the last sequence of interviews done two years later.

While watching DAUGHTER FROM DANANG, several tired-but-true aphorisms came to mind: “Be careful what you wish for”, “No good deed goes unpunished”, and “You can’t go home again”. Sometimes it’s better just to move on.

Before viewing this miniseries, I had only read the book (of the same name) by David Simon and Edward Burns published in 1997. Still, the world of decaying neighborhoods, the havoc of street drugs and hopelessness among the disadvantaged has deepened in the Bush era. It took an ingenious director like Charles Dutton to recount one family’s troubled history gripping miniseries that doesn’t miss a beat. And he’s selected a cast of relative unknowns who assume their roles with dead-on realism

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Corner! Click Here

The film follows a year in the life of one impoverished family against the backdrop of their neighborhood during the 1990’s a drug-ridden quarter-mile from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Dutton, like Simon and Burns, dwells on the humanity of his cxharacters and the universal themes of their day-to-day struggles. You needn’t have been an alcoholic or drug addict to enter the hearts of these people or understand how they swing between hope and hopelessness.

As political commentary, THE CORNER couldn’t be more timely, especially in its grasp of urban education, inner city commmunties, underage pareenthood and America’s Dickensian juvenile justice system. Viewing what these potentially gifted people endure, viewers may ask how many good people we discard because of our cultural myopia, institutional racism and apathy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Corner! Click Here

The core performance here is T.K. Dutton’s “Gary” — the father of his broken family. The ways in which he struggles to overcome present shame in light of past success is something most of us will recognize — race aside — if not today, then tomorrow.

There is no score to speak of except for Corey Harris’s blues track which occurs on splash screens and during the credits for each of six episodes. Dutton frames each episode with interviews of different principal characters to evoke the feel of a documentary, and he more than succeeds.

Dutton understands the lives of these characters because he grew up in their neighnorhood and experienced first-hand the dissolution of life on these corners — where red tops and spider bags are the basis of life and death. He knows that the pain of addiction is potent, but not always as devastating as the cruelties of the real world “clean.”

Every facet of this production suggests HBO should rebroadcast THE CORNER on its tenth anniversary. You wil laugh, weep, wince and cheer; and when it’s over, you will hate to leave these good people.

While there are segments that are bleak, Dutton didn’t intend to shock. He wanted to remind us that these men and women are fully human, and that –like Gary– we have the potential to stumble, too. We might be doomed to the Corner but for the grace of God.

Five glowing stars for the DVD set — and the book on which it’s based.

Seldom do you find a film that makes you feel as close to the characters as this one does. If I could put into words the range of emotion you will feel when viewing this series, you would purchase this set without hesitation.

Though it is true that this is not for everyone, those who can deal with the harshest realities of life will be blown away by the gritty “in your face” approach of this Mini-Series. You will find yourself hoping with all your heart that Gary or Fran will “straighten up” and get it together, only to realize that they are not pillars of strength and are sometimes doomed to fail, even before they start. The most disappointing thing about the series is that it ends. As you progress through the episodes you will gradually begin to dread the inevitable end, and it will leave you hungry for more.

This was a project held in more or less utter contempt by it’s star—one more justification for Cagney’s decision to bail out of Warners for greener independent pastures.”I didn’t like this story the last four times I did it,and I don’t like it now”,said he when exec producer Hal Wallis proposed “Captains”—patriotic considerations may have persuaded him,and the fact it would be his first in Technicolor. This one is a must-see,or rather a must-have.It’s Cagney improv—he couldn’t care less about the story and doesn’t care if we know it.When he’s bored with dialogue(often),he breaks into Yiddish–in one scene, hapless Alan Hale’s walking across the room and Cagney trips him(you can tell Hale didn’t see it coming).Jim was pushing 43 when he made this,so there is at least tacit script recognition of his character’s age—still,he’s surrounded by an elderly lot of sidekicks—Reginald Gardiner,George Tobias, the aforementioned Alan Hale—these four are like a roving band of vaudevillians in the Canadian wild—one can imagine the group of them whiling away location hours singing “the old songs” Cagney loved so dearly. And,oh yes, they sing in the picture too.Other endearing moments—an extended night club sequence with chorous girls and a rousing rendition of the title song—wonderful! —were there really clubs like this during the war?—if so,I was born too late.Let’s not forget Brenda Marshall—so cold and passionless in “The Sea Hawk”—not here! She’s a revelation—hot, sexy, ruthless—I love it when Cagney gives her the pay-off in their “honeymoon” suite—she rips open that cash envelope like a tigress—wowzers!—too bad she dumped the career when she married Bill Holden. There’s not much combat in “Captains”—mostly aerial training stuff, but it’s fascinating—and the gorgeous color really sugars it up.Cagney made a big mistake when he ditched Warners—his great years were essentially over when he pulled out of Burbank—only “White Heat” lay ahead to remind us of the glory days.”Captains Of The Clouds” is a curtain call for the old “fun” Cagney of the thirties—and as such,it’s a keeper.

This is one of my favorite James Cagney films because it somehow manages to intertwine an intricate plot into a very simple and patriotic story. More important however, it relies on one of my favorite film themes, that of the protagonist (Cagney) not making the transition from one era of personal glory into the next era where he becomes a stranger in his own world which has changed all around him. This film got two Academy Awards nominations for Interior Decoration (Ted Smith - Art Direction, Casey Roberts - Interior Decoration) and Color Cinematography (Sol Polito). Director Michael Curtiz visually does an excellent job with this script. It starts off in the beautifully filmed Canadian wilderness with Cagney in his usual reckless tough guy form. These early images stand for the strong individual nature of James Cagney’s character Brian MacLean that is in itself based on the Cagney mystique. Gradually, MacLean and the other two main characters Johnny Dutton (Dennis Morgan) and Emily Foster (Brenda Marshall) make gradual transitions to reveal personality growth, stagnation and hidden revelations. This is a wartime film made in 1942 and the film intertwines the plot with patriotic sentiment quite nicely but stresses the practicality of creating and maintaining a proficient and professional military force if the job is to get done. The entire cast is wonderful and includes Alan Hale, George Tobias and Gig Young. Composer Max Steiner also once again turns in an insightful and intelligent score. There are some great flying scenes full of bravado, daring do and just plain out foolhardiness with Cagney leading his cronies in and out of the doghouse. This is a very entertaining film.
