Here’s a quandry. I would definitely say you should steal the Disney Treasures Complte Goofy plot since all of the shorts on this DVD are in the Treasures state. You accept EVERY Goofy short in that Treasures Status. Disaster is it’s out of print now and only available in the seconday market. If you can secure that at a resonable label then that is your best bet.

This is a very beneficial DVD however containing 9 Goofy shorts made in the 1940’s and 1950’s. it includes several of Goofy’s “how to” series where Goofy takes share in the demonstration and a narrrator does the swear over. These include: How to Dance, How to Swim, how to Fish, and The Art of Skiing. These are all quite silly.

It’s worth the $12 or so but any Goofy fan should try and score the Complete Goofy area if possible.

Goofy is hilarious. when I conventional to to look him alot as a kid on Disney I couldn’t befriend but laugh at his type of antics for humor. it was so monotonous it was comic. he really touches kids too . even in his short cartoons. I would recommend everyone give Goofy a chance. young or obsolete. you’re never too young or too worn for cartoons. delight in what you will

When I got this on Dvd I was so ecstatic. Walt Disney and others created some fantastic toon characters.

If you thought the original cut of Highlander II was bad, just wait until you see Highlander: The Source, the fifth (and hopefully final) installment in the beloved series. The Source begins sometime in the distant future (*yawn*) as Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul), Methos (Peter Wingfield), Duncan’s ex-wife Anna (Thekla Reuten), Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes), and a small band of immortals seek out “the source”, which is said to be the origin place of the immortals. Standing in their way is the demonic Guardian (Cristian Solimeno), who is supposedly an all-powerful immortal that picks off our heroes one by one, leading to the inevitable showdown between him and Duncan. What ends up being the most infuriating about The Source for Highlander fans is how much the film ends up going against the mythology of the series, as well as Duncan and other character’s motivations for seeking out “the source”. The Jabba the Hutt lookalike in the film doesn’t exactly help things out either, and the film as a whole is just one big jumbled mess, thanks to the lackluster, sloppily edited direction from Brett Leonard (Lawnmower Man, Man-Thing), and a cover-themed edition of the original Highlander soundtrack to boot (the version of “Who Wants to Live Forever?” is more annoying than anything else) just all amount to the worst sequel the series has ever seen. Adrian Paul seems to sleep through the film, and the ending is, well, see it for yourself if you’re a Highlander fan, and decide which part of the film is the worst. All in all, Highlander: The Source is beyond bad, and no matter how much of a Highlander fan you may be, this should be avoided. If you are a fan though, you’ll more than likely want to check this out anyway, but don’t say I you hadn’t been warned.

There have been two really great parts to the whole Highlander franchise: the original movie, and the TV series (especially from its second season on, when they introduced the concept of the Watcher organization, and wrote stories about a subgroup of Watcher who developed a religious fanatic-type fear and hatred of immortals, and started hunting them). Both these version of the Highlander franchise featured great characters, marvellous flashbacks, interesting villains, and dealt with both the positive and negative aspects of immortality, such as unending youth and strength, and the experience of being able to see whole different ages, such as most people can only dream about, balanced off against the loneliness of watching everyone around you age and die, with only a handful of people with whom you can form lasting bonds — and many of them are out to take your head. It was thrilling stuff, and as the first movie and series proved, this concept was a rich source from which really great stories could be mined again and again.

How sad then that with the exception of that first film, the makers of Highlander movies have failed so dismally. This movie actually rivals “Highlander II: the Quickening” in sheer awfulness, and I hadn’t believed that possible. I had a terrible sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when I found that this movie was set in a near future where society had broken down into chaos and anarchy. Why on earth did the producers of this film choose to borrow an element from the worst movie in the entire franchise? The villain was so ridiculous he wasn’t even remotely menacing or scary. What could EVER make anyone think a villain who yells “Helloo Joe!” as he sails through the air hit by a car (in a stupendously unrealistic stunt/special effect) would play well? This was just one moment among many involving the villain that elicits unintentional laughter. The guardian was so horrendously, cringe-inducingly bad that if the Kurgan were in this film he would have killed him for bringing villains into disrepute.

And of course, on top of a poor story, a laughable villain, and the complete absence of any of the elements that made either the first film or the series a success, this movie suffers from a fault common to all Highlander films but the first: lack of continuity. Why, if they are going to make these things, do they insist on disregarding everything that came before? This is really frustrating to those fans who have delved into the world of the Highlander franchise and would like it to make at least some sense, and have some internal consistency. It’s hard to stay interesting in something when they keep changing the ground rules on you.

But the above listed flaws barely scratch the surface of what it wrong with this movie. I read that this was intended to be the first of a trilogy. All I can say to that is that I hope not. As much as I am irritated at the lack of consistency and continuity in the Highlander movies, if they’re going to do any more, they need to retcon this abortion out of existence. Having inexplicably copied concepts from the single worse installment of the whole franchise, they should also copy the follow up taken to that movie by the producers of the next one and write a new story that ignores this steaming pile of dog excrement and starts with a blank slate.

While some may consider the inclusion of movie serials to be a bit of a cheat on this set, one can argue that movie serials (and radio) served as a starting point of sorts for the early years of episodic television and, of course, the serials did eventually make their way to television’s airwaves. Perhaps the only major omission of a show with a paranormal flavor that is in the public domain and is not included in this set is Boris Karloff’s limited series “The Veil” which, possibly, could have substituted for one of the serials. Regardless, this 12-DVD set includes a mixture of some very common, some not so common, and some downright rare shows. Arguably, the biggest “find” on this set is the inclusion of 24 episodes of “Captain Z-Ro” and, to the best of my knowledge, this set marks the commercial DVD debut of Boris Karloff’s “Thriller,” a series that many fans have long desired to see on DVD. Perhaps the inclusion of the “Thriller” episode “The Return of Andrew Bentley” might prompt further consideration for an official DVD release of this series in the future. And those who previously purchased Mill Creek’s 4-DVD set of 50 “One Step Beyond” episodes will be delighted to know that of the 16 episodes included here, only one episode (”Where Are They?”) is repeated from that earlier box set.

Among the unsold pilots, I enjoyed the second incarnation of “The Shadow” titled “Invisible Avenger,” which was filmed on location in New Orleans in the late 1950s and was eventually released theatrically, and “Tales of Frankenstein.” Don Megowan, who appears as the monster in “Frankenstein” also appears in the live action version of “Captain Fathom,” which plays like a low rent version of “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.” One also wonders about the possibilities of “Destination Space” had it been picked up as a regular series by CBS. Though a bit on the talky side (especially in the middle scenes depicted on earth), the pilot featured solid performances from TV veterans like Harry Townes, Charles Aidman, Edward Platt, Whitney Blake and Gail Kobe, and had the backing of a major studio, Paramount.

As is the case with compilations of public domain shows, the audio/visual quality is all over the map and reflects a variety of sources such as kinescopes for the live shows and unrestored 16 millimeter syndication prints for many of the TV show episodes. While none of the episodes that I have viewed so far are unwatchable, this is definitely not a set for videophiles, nor those expecting state-of-the-art special effects. In fact, the special effects are downright primitive when compared to today’s special effects and CGI. But considering the low budgets for most of these productions, it’s obvious that the SFX people were trying to do the best they could with the limited resources available to them and that’s part of the charm of watching these early Sci-Fi TV efforts.

The variety of the shows included in this set is so broad that there is bound to be something to appeal to almost anyone who even remotely enjoys science fiction. This set is highly recommended for classic/vintage TV fans and those who enjoy the early days of science fiction on the small screen. My rating is closer to **** & ½ for this release, just missing a full five stars given the variable audio/visual quality.

Any reviewer stating that this collection is a rip-off couldn’t be more wrong in my opinion. Mill Creek is a wonderful company that is one of the first distributors to provide public domain material at a budget, affordable price. Their price structure is the same for all their 150 episode box sets. If you can wait a little while you will be able to pick this up for around $16 or less. I couldn’t recommend their other TV classics enough. Their 3 Western and Detective releases are wonderful, and should be sought-out. I have been asking Mill Creek to release a Sci-fi set this past year and they are now doing it and I couldn’t be happier. Since they are releasing public domain material, they have to stick with what they have available. I’m sure they are putting the serials on the set to not only fill space, but they must have thought they would fit in nicely with the Sci-fi theme. I can’t wait to watch some of these old episodes again. Looks like good family fun.

Speaking as a 16 year old Canadian male, I can safely say that The Powerpuff Girls was awesome. With its unique animation style, immensely likeable characters, deliciously over the top cartoon violence and razor-sharp sense of wit, this show served as a reminder that Cartoon Network was once great. But unfortunately, to say the series has barely received any worthy home video releases is an understatement.

Until now, that is.

After a few scattered, kid-friendly compilations and a lacklustre first season set, the complete run of the show is at last making it to DVD. Considering that the past home video releases have completely neglected the last three seasons of the show, and that a fair amount of notable episodes from the other three seasons have also been neglected, it’s great to see Warner Bros. is finally giving all of it to us in one handy package.

According to TVShowsonDVD.com, this set will be comprised of 6 double-sided discs containing all 78 episodes of the show and the previously released Christmas special, “‘Twas the Fight Before Christmas”. It’s worth noting that the final episode, “See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey” (notable for being an all-singing episode), has never been broadcast in the States (although it has been broadcast in Canada and the UK), so it will be interesting to have.

If you’re a fan like me, this set is an obvious must-buy. As for those who have never seen the show, it’s easy to get into: just look past the sugary-sweet femininity and you’ll find an incredibly sharp sense of humour.

UPDATE (01-23-09): Okay, so I got my copy. Each of the 6 discs represents one season of the show, and considering the sheer amount of material on each double-sided disc, everything is mastered at a pretty high bit rate. Of course, the episodes are all very lovely looking and sounding, as they’d better be, considering the animation style and age of the materials.

While I haven’t thoroughly looked at the special features, I can tell you something fans might want to know:

“The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!”, that completely new episode animated in Adobe Flash and broadcast in the States the day before this set’s release, IS included here. You need only pop disc 6, side B into your player and look under the extras section.

So did this set live up to my expectations? Oh, yeah. Still highly recommended, narrowing of classic to clunker ratio in the last two seasons notwithstanding.

Here it is in all its glory! Despite the random, haphazard packaging of episodes on older DVD releases with even menu options that were inconsistent, the Powerpuff Girls finally get the royal send-off in ONE PACKAGE.

So who are the Powerpuff Girls? They are the by-product of Professor Utonium’s desire to create girls using sugar, spice and everything nice except things go awry when he accidentally spills “Chemical X” into the concotion. The result: 3 little girls with super-powers. Blossom is their leader who is level-headed in most situations. Buttercup is the Powerpuff who will most likely charge into a fight without regard to consequences. Bubbles, despite her superpowers, is most easily scared and is the most sensitive ‘puff of the bunch.

The double-meanings and creativity of the episodes were a delight and it was something that I used to watch guiltily as a 20-something man. They were downright hilarious, though, so it was hard not to watch. The violence might be a little too much for some parents, but my 5-year old daughter knows that it’s fake and plays it up for the humor that it is. She hasn’t gone around the house bashing things up nor has she exhibited any violent tendencies. Still, parents be warned and decide based on your own lifestyle and viewing choices.

The only minor complaint that I have is that it doesn’t include the theatrical movie, but I’m sure that the lawyers can be well-paid and thanked for that licensing issue. Still, the movie is available for purchase separately, so no harm done.

The other minor complaint is the use of double-sided DVDs which naturally brings the price down, but makes the average parent a nervous wreck in terms of keeping the DVD surface clear of scratches.

Still, it’s nice to finally have the entire TV series out, including the 78th episode never aired in the States. My daughter and I are ready to adventure the complete ‘puffs!

“Deep Red” is without a doubt Dario Argento’s masterpiece. With a very clear (for Argento) storyline, absolutely dazzling camerawork and an unforgettable score by Goblin (which is bound to sound incredible in 5.1), “Deep Red” is a must for the horror aficionado, especially those with an interest in films that are historically relevant. “Deep Red” is the “Psycho” of Italian cinema. Back in 1975, when it came out, graphic gore was mostly relegated to ultra low-budget movies where carnage was the only point of the movie. With “Deep Red”, Argento took gore in a completely new direction, mixing it with classy cinematography and a complex story, and unleashing it upon unsuspecting stars of the Italian stage and screen, people so prestigious in their own way you would never expect them to get it the way they do in a movie. The uncut widescreen version of this film, which has been long overdue in America, will reveal to those who have only seen it in pan-and-scan form the artistry and complexity of Argento’s Technovision images. The previously unreleased footage, which I have seen and which was truncated from the version that has been in circulation in this country for decades, adds depth to the characters and the story. In my opinion, you should preferably watch this in Italian with English subtitles — the English dubbing is atrocious and the Italian original is far more poetic-sounding and apropriate to the story and, besides, Anchor Bay is releasing the added footage in Italian because there is no English dub of those scenes, so you might as well watch it all in its original language. At any rate, this is a must for everyone who appreciates good scary movies, for anyone with an eye for truly spectacular filmmaking and especially for anyone who thinks European movies means Truffaut. An absolute must-have!

Unlike many who have posted here, I HAVE seen the full 126minute version of Deep Red, on a badly copied conversion inpan-and-scan - and let me tell you, even in this form it was still one of the most exciting movies I think I’ve ever seen. Although a couple of decades of film has probably blunted the shock and gore elements, and all those character moments might make it seem slow, I promise you that this movie will freak you in ways few horror movies will. Dario Argento’s reputation rests entirely on this film and Suspiria, but this one is the superior. All the best elements of his previous films are combined here - the protagonist who’s seen something important he can’t identify, killers with a fetish for black gloves, vague hints of the supernatural, gender transgression….. and of coursre the gore. Believe me, you’ll think twice about checking the door locks after dark when you see what happens to Helga the psychic. Argento was never this suspenseful again, probably because Mark (the protagonist), like the audience, knows he has to solve the mystery before the killer will ever leave him alone. The DVD release of DEEP RED is a real event, and Goblin’s score presented in Dolby Digital would be worth it all by itself! I can’t wait until release day………..

A finely crafted, sumptuously produced romantic thriller that has the distinction of featuring director Hitchcock, and stars Grant and Bergman at their collective best. Even so, Claude Rains manages to dominate almost every scene in which he appears; his Oscar-nominated portrayal of the lovesick mama’s boy engaged in espionage comes off as supremely menacing, emotionally ambiguous, and yet oddly sympathetic … all at the same time.

The film-to-DVD transfer is quite good. There are a couple of jumps and pops in the master print that are a bit jarring, but overall it’s a crisp and clean presentation with great contrast. Although the package doesn’t mention it, the DVD does offer chapter search/scene selection which is always a nice perk. There aren’t any of the bonus features that we spoiled DVD collectors are coming to expect (trailers, biographical sketches, etc.), but it’s still a more than acceptable edition of a truly classic film.

The video transfer of new Criterion DVD version of NOTORIOUS is a bit sharper, more detailed, and has better contrast than that of the Anchor Bay DVD version released in 1999. Unfortunately, it also reveals a lot more film grains. The graininess is not noticeable in most parts of the film unless a direct comparision with Anchor Bay’s transfer is made. But in a few scenes, the graininess just cannot be ignored, and could be detrimental to one’s viewing pleasure. In spite of that, in my opinion the increased detail and sharpness of Criterion’s transfer is still preferrable to Anchor Bay’s comparatively softer and darker picture.

Regarding audio, it is no contest. Criterion’s mono 1.0 sound has MUCH greater clarity, depth, details, volume than Anchor Bay’s comparatively muted and muffled soundtrack. In addition, the Criterion disc also includes optional English subtitles while Anchor Bay’s does not.

The Criterion DVD retains all of the supplementary material from their own CAV laserdisc version from 1991, and it adds some more…

There are two excellent audio commentary tracks. One is by Marian Keane, and it deals straight with the artistic aspects of the film by providing scene-by-scene, shot-by-shot dissertations. Commentaries like this are rare, and it is most beneficial to average viewers who want to learn more about the purposes and intentions behind every shot, every cut, every line. For instance, in a seemingly ordinary shot of a grandfather clock inside the Sebastian home, Keene analyzes the composition by pointing out the phallic symbol of the clock that suggests Alex’s presence, the adjacent banister that reminds us of his mother, and the flower at the window that suggests the vulnerability of Alicia. Another commentary track, by Rudy Behlmer, was recorded for the laserdisc version, and it is the more common type of commentary, in which the commentator recounts the production’s history, the logistical aspects, sypnoses of the lives and careers of the filmmakers, a few anecdotes. Behlmer mentions something omitted by Keane — Roy Webb’s music (which is given a separate audio track on the DVD). At one point, he explains how the RKO Radio Picture logo was removed from the opening credits; but he refers only to the laserdisc version. This DVD version, however, restores the RKO logo.

Other extras include an all-too-brief excerpt of the short story “The Song of the Dragon” which inspired the film. There are about 40 production stills, mostly of Hitchcock, Cary Grant, and Ingrid Bergman. There is a section that explains how the many rear projection shots were done (some of the shots are quite seamless). There are a few production correspondences written by David O. Selznick, Bergman, and even FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover in response to the film’s treatment of special agents. There are 4 theatrical trailers and short teasers. There is a one-minute newsreel footage of Hitchcock and Bergman arriving in England. There are script excerpts of 5 deleted scenes, and 3 alternate endings in which one or more of the four main characters get wounded or killed on screen. In a moving segment called “The Fate of the Unica Key”, Marian Keane speaks on an audio track about how Bergman, during AFI’s Lifetime Award ceremony for Hitchcock, handed the Unica key to the director as a token of love and respect (unfortunately, no footage of the AFI telecast is included). Last, but not least, there is a one-hour radioplay version of the film, in excellent audio quality, recorded in 1948, starring Joseph Cotten as Devlin and Bergman again as Alicia (the laserdisc version only has a 15-minute excerpt of the radioplay).

I’ll admit that I loved the first two Home Alone movies. They had a certain charm to them given the silliness of the story. This third installment oozes with something else other than charm. Everything that was great about the first two HA movies is absent from this movie. Not to mention that the story is much different than the first two.

Plot: Some hi-tech crooks hide a microchip inside of a remote-controlled toy car. During their time in the airport, their luggage gets switched with the luggage of the crotchety middle-aged woman that lives next door to the Pruitt family. The crooks realize that their luggage has been swapped with the old woman and finds out where she lives. On arrival they meet up with the snotty scamp Alex who realizes something is wrong with them and plans to thwart them while his mother is away.

Opinion: After reading the plot, you already know that this has nothing to do with the MCcallister family. That is the least of its problems. What was fresh in the first two HA movies is now mundane. Every gag is the same: people get bonked upside the head with things and fall down. Alex D. Linz is about as bland as tofu. As a matter of fact, the whole cast is about as bland as tofu. The wisecracking parrot has more personality than these cardboard cutouts in this movie. The crooks made Harry and Marv look like geniuses. Did I forget to mention that this movie is lethally dull? Plus this movie is missing what made the first two great: Heart. This movie is emotionally distant like Marla Singer(Helena Bonham Carter’s character in Fight Club). Nothing about this movie is redeemable. It’s all routine. You’ve seen it all before done better. Home Alone 3 and 4 are classic examples of “milking the cow”. If you love this “movie” you love these: BABY GENIUSES, SUPERBABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2, LOOK WHO’S TALKING NOW, ARE WE DONE YET, HONEY WE SHRUNK OURSELVES and PROBLEM CHILD 2.

First, before I begin, you must know I’m not an optimistic person, and I rarely watch movies since so many are bad or horrible. My family finally convinced me to watch it and my sides were sore from laughing when I was done. I loved the scene with the iron bar and the mouse! I have never seen a guy hit such a high note! Anyway, I loved it which compleatly surprised me!(Note: I never saw the first two Home Alone Videos)

Ahhh, the classic post-apocolyptic thriller that sets the standard for post-apocolyptic thrillers. One tagline reads ‘In the future, cities will become deserts, roads will become battlefields and the hope of mankind will appear as a stranger’. I remember skipping school in the early 80’s to stay home and watch this one on cable, Such a great movie that has lost none of it’s appeal even after 20 plus years. This is the story of a man, once an officer of the law, who now roams the highways of post-apocolyptic Australia searching for gasoline and maybe a reason to exist. In this time, gasoline is the most valuable commodity, so much so men kill for it. Mel Gibson plays Max, in the role that made him known worldwide. During his travels, he comes across a small settlement that is actually producing petroleum. This settlement is besieged by a group of motorized, murdering, mauraders who want all the fuel. Knowing that the fuel is life, the people in the settlement defend the fuel, but their strength and ability to hold out against this powerful force is becoming less and less each day. Max strikes a deal with them for all the fuel he can carry provided he can get a truck for them so they can haul their tanker of gas out of the wasteland and find a better life in a fabled coastal land. Max fufills his end of the bargin, and leaves the settlement with his fuel, but is attacked and left for dead. Having lost his car, he decides to drive the tanker. This sets up one of the most amazing highway battles ever filmed, as the settlers have turned the tanker into a moving fortess, and the marauders will stop at nothing to stop the tanker and get the gas. This movie is what I would call a nearly pefect example of excellent casting, story, dialogue, plot, script, wardrobe, etc. to make up a near perfect movie. Everything in the movie works so well that your entire attention is focused on the screen, even after multiple viewings. This is actually the second in a trilogy, Mad Max being the first and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome being the third, but, in my opinion, this one is the best. It’s raw, gritty, sometimes humourous and competely enthralling. On a side note, what’s up with Warner Brothers and their crummy cardboard packaging? It just seems so flimsy and cheap. And don’t look for a lot of extras with this release, just the full and widescreen versions and some production notes.

This just in…I heard George Miller and Mel Gibson are bringing Max back one more time in 2004 in Mad Max: Fury Road……

This movie, the second in the Mad Max trilogy, is easily the best of the three. Visually, it’s very distinctive. The first movie showed a society breaking down in the post apocalyptic world. By this movie, it’s broken down. The first movie showed the immediate aftermath. There were still working phones, power lines, people trying to go on with their normal lives, etc. There was even a police force, of which Max was a member, trying to maintain order. Now, society has descended into complete anarchy. Civilization’s infrastructure has broken down completely. In the first movie you saw shops, service stations, hospitals. Now you see people scavenging in a wrecked world. Max’s car is no longer a gleaming black vehicle, but a delapidated, dirty old beater, its engine still in top shape, but its interior stripped, and its body covered in dust, battered and old. Max’s leather police uniform is no longer immaculate, but torn and patched. Visually, this movie set a new standard, and like “Star Wars” and “Blade Runner”, changed the way movies in its genre were made. Even the setting works in telling the story. Where the first film featured country with trees and green grass, this movie is set in a blasted desert, further accentuating the sense of collapse.

And this movie’s quality doesn’t end with the visuals. It has a great, exciting story, very reminiscent of the pulp adventures of old. It’s hero, a wanderer, a uniquely skilled and deadly loner, is a mythic archetype. The actors are all perfectly cast. Mel Gibson, with only a few lines of dialogue, turns in a compelling, emotional performance, showing the transformation from the happy, loving husband and father of the first film, to the wounded, burnt out shell of a man seen here. In this film, Max is a tough, fang-scarred old wolf, who has absolutely nothing to live for, but whose survival instinct, combined with his toughness and resourcefulness, just won’t let him quit.

The other characters in this movie are also unique and memorable. Bruce Spence’s gyro captain is a likeable opportunist. Mike Preston’s Papagallo is the determined, idealistic leader, in over his head, but trying his best. Vernon Wells makes a great, flamboyant villain. And Kjell Nilsson is the Humungus, whose face we never see; leader of a vicious band of trash, whose hulking physique, and savage followers seem at odds with his articulate speech, and ostensibly conciliatory manner. The story and characters elevate this movie over the host of low budget imitators that followed. But the film is not short on action either. And George Miller was a gifted director who put to film what remain the best car chase scenes ever shot, right down to this day. Action lovers will find plenty of excitement with this movie. It’s a terrible shame the third film wasn’t very good, as it killed the prospects of a long running series. This is sad because Max, wandering lone wolf that he is, is a character who, like James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, or the Conan of the old pulp magazines is eminently suitable to a series of adventures.

“Fly Jefferson Airplane” is a musical documentary recommended easily to fans of the beloved San Francisco acid-rock group. Vintage performance footage of their best-known songs are presented in surprisingly-clean footage with good sound fidelity and in their entirety–rare for most “nostalgia” videos. The performances span the classic “hits” of the 1966-1970 era: “It’s No Secret”, “White Rabbit”, “Somebody To Love”, “Plastic Fantastic Lover” as well as lesser-known gems “Martha” and the two “Pooneil” songs.

If one is looking for “dirty dish”, there is no sniping here. The former band members reflect nostalgically, warmly and philosophically on their collective achievements instead of the often-documented acrimony and in-fighting. They have, it seems, grown up. They are all, Marty Balin points out with some satisfaction, STILL ALIVE. Perhaps no other major rock group of the era can boast such a claim. It is, initially, shocking to see these sexagenarians and reconcile them with the young and vital performers we see in the music clips.

As a documentary, it plays it safe: it avoids a critical perspective on the music, the albums, the band members or live performances. It is, in some ways akin to a souvenir of “The Summer of Love”. It does, however, go into enough interesting detail (through interviews with all the band member interspersed throughout) to give the uninitiated or casual fan a reasonably-broad and informative look at the group’s history and accomplishments. Bonus features include more interviews and a photo gallery.

I guess I developed my appreciation for the Jefferson Airplane during my college years (1977-1981). I’m no child of the sixties, but my uncle went to Woodstock, and like many college students I learned of the magical powers of certain hallucinogenic substances. There is some ineffable quality in Jefferson Airplane’s music that lends itself well to the psychedelic experience, and anyone who knows where I’m coming from ought to get this DVD. Apparently produced under the auspices of Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, this disc captures some of the magic of the San Francisco music scene, circa 1965-1972, and the pivotal role Jefferson Airplane played therein. That the members of the band are still alive and still relatively LUCID is nothing short of amazing, but if you are looking for dish, you won’t find much here; there’s nothing in the interviews that hints of the acrimony that sometimes flared during the band’s heyday. But the musical performances: WOW! Where did they dig up some of these films? And how did they preserve them so well? Particularly fascinating for me is the performance of “It’s No Secret,” featuring the band’s FIRST female vocalist, Signe Anderson. Her presence is altogether different from that of her successor, Grace Slick, but there’s something about the quality of her voice that always intrigued me. The performance is a heady mixture of exultant vocals, jubilant dancing in the audience, and of course those very trippy liquid light shows that Ms. Anderson’s first husband was apparently responsible for. I don’t think you can overestimate the archival value of “Fly Jefferson Airplane.” So break out the stash, slap this disc on the DVD player, and take a little TRIP back in time ….

An unlikely story of 5 dogs who stow aboard a space shuttle, take a trip to a space station to pick up a Russian dog, land on the moon, then pilot the ship safely back to earth and their loving masters. It’s what you would expect in a movie like this: action enough for older kids, comedy and cheese enough for younger ones. Clean fun.

The highest praise I can give it is that my children loved it and I wasn’t bored (the first time.) Recommended for children of all ages.

Well, they won’t be winning any prestigious film honors, but the “Buddy” movies are great for young kids. The storylines are easy to follow and focus on family and teamwork. You can safely let them watch without worrying that something is going to scar them for life.
