As the five-star rating would expose, I’ve loved TOMMY sincethe day it opened (and yes, I was there for its premiere) . I’ve alsopurchased the movie in objective about every incarnation that have been released: videotape, laserdisc, and now DVD.

What’s most moving about the DVD version — and something which doesn’t seem to have been mentioned in other Amazon reviews — is that the soundtrack to the film has been completely restored. “Quintaphonic sound” may sound a dinky comical and may not even mean noteworthy in this age of digital sound, but TOMMY was the movie that saw the rebirth of multi-channel audio (most films of the unhurried 60s and early 70s were either mono or 2-channel stereo) . The enhanced 5-channel discrete sound was a perfect extension of Ken Russell’s courageous visuals. The effect line to the movie was “Your senses will never be the same,” and it perfectly described both the visual AND aural assault on audience members.

Well, this DVD is the first (and only) format to feature the complete “Quintaphonic” soundtrack. If you have a Dolby Digital decoder, you’re going to hear the movie in a intention that wasn’t even possible wait on in 1975! All of the vocals are locked tiring, center while the collect itself blasts out of the remaining four speakers. And there’s absolutely no distortion, even when you jack the volume up (which you should, since it was intended to be heard that diagram) . The characterize quality is also outstanding. One key moment: during the blackout part of “Fiddle About” the cloak is absolutely sunless — not a speck can be seen, proof that this film was carefully transferred from a pristine source print!

This is an extraordinary film presented on an amazing DVD. If your home system isn’t yet able to decode the Dolby Digital soundtrack, do yourself a favor and come by a decoder at the same time you grasp this disc. You won’t be sorry.

Having heard about Tommy for years, I felt it was time to actually study the movie. I had never acquired grand of a sense for what the movie is about, probably because I don’t consider it is really possible to actually justify the film to anyone else. This is some shapely unusual stuff. As the thing progressed, I had a hard time figuring out if I liked what I was seeing, whether it made any sense, etc. In the raze, I must say I did delight in the film, thanks largely to Daltrey, the music, and Ann-Margaret. What does it all mean? That’s a toughie, as I’m obvious the record means different things to different people. I had the sense that Tommy is supposed to be some kind of spiritual experience, and in some ways it is - maybe.

Here’s my ridiculously oversimplified summary of the basic account. As a kid, Tommy is messed up ravishing salubrious, having witnessed something stunning dramatic; as a result, he becomes deaf, blind, and restful - for psychological rather than physical reasons. His mother (Ann-Margaret) and step-father try all kinds of exclusive cures as Tommy enters what should be his adulthood, including a visit to the holy rollers at a church that worships Marilyn Monroe and a special session with “The Acid Queen” (Tina Turner) . Nothing seems to bag through to him - until, of course, he happens to advance across a pinball machine. Truly, that deaf, listless, and blind kid obvious plays a mean pinball, knocking the unique pinball wizard (Elton John) off his pedestal. Suddenly, Tommy’s family is rolling in the money, yet Tommy remains uncommunicative. When he does eventually salvage “awareness,” he is transformed into a messiah figure, and crowds flock to him to hear his wisdom.

The film gets off to a splendid lifeless originate, as we follow Tommy’s childhood. Then Tina Turner enters the record as The Acid Queen, and she forevermore gets the joint jumping with her electric performance. Other memorable performers include Eric Clapton, Elton John, and Jack Nicholson (who does in fact teach here) . Ann-Margaret tops all of them with her performance, though, earning an Academy Award nomination for her work. It’s a demanding role; alongside the acting and singing, she also has to roll around in a chocolatey, gooey mess. She may have been a tiny older in 1975, but Ann-Margaret definitely serene had it.

The boys from the band pop in from time to time, but the chronicle is increasingly focused on Tommy, his awakening, and his cult following. Some really distinct representations of Christianity are incorporated into the film, while, at the same time, greed and materialism are also spotlighted as fake gods. Ultimately, though - thanks to a problematic ending -it is hard for me to discern the message that the filmmakers were actually trying to communicate here. I’ve heard that The Who’s new album makes some of the more esoteric aspects of the Tommy chronicle a puny clearer.

Obviously, some individuals will not like this film at all; it’s sort of an acid streak on film, vague and unsettling with its symbolism and discernible criticisms of organized religion. Others may accept enlightenment of one sort or another. Most people, including me, will probably impartial notice at this as a unfamiliar but oddly intelligent musical that leaves you scratching your head a petite bit after you observe it. Of course, even if the account loses you completely, you detached have plenty of broad music from The Who to sit assist and like.

This is a incredible collection.

I can’t consider of a finer compilation for someone enthusiastic in exploring the diverse uses of animation (defintely non-Disney, thank God) and adult always in theme and occassionally frontal nudity (a couple very brief seconds in “Special Delivery”) and this is most assuredly not porn (soft or hard.) But what happens in some of these classics may be bit too harsh for children or outside their opinion. Parents or guardians should choose for themselves.

(1) I judge “Special Delivery” a masterpiece. A execute ( that is not at all cancel) that is a very incisive assume on hypocrisy and immorality (or is that amorality.) A wonderful example of how a “cartoon” can do a lot more than acquire an hysterical laugh out of you. It’s black-humor, will probaby give most anyone a smart smile, chuckle or yowl.

(2) “Getting Started” is one of Richard Condie’s first films and another masterpiecce. Condie seems incapable of not making a masterpiece. His select on everyday delusions of grandeur and reality is a charmer with his incredible off-center sense of humor. Beautifully moving and executed. Once you adjust to Condie’s humor and style, you’ll be coming benefit for more. This is unusual individualist creation at its best.

(3) “The Astronomical Snit” is another Condie masterpiece of a remarkable higher order. Here Condie makes a statement on the unthinkable that is hilarious until literally the extinguish. This isn’t one of the best intriguing films, it belongs in the company of the greatest films ever made. Condie is an absurdist in the W.C. Fields tradition. The couple in this at first seem unreal, but their bizarre eccentricities create them somehow, more realistic, believable and, even, lovable, while maintaining a giddy swipe at “normalcy.

(4) “Bag A Job” is an exceedingly piquant and probably successful trouble using rock ‘n roll to demonstrate how to do what the title and classic song quiz. With plenty of smart, almost Looney-Toonish animation, it is impartial boring fun to contemplate and delievers it’s message without bludgeoning. Would that all public service messages were this kewl and shimmering. A classic.

(5) “The Cat Came Succor” is a film I had heard about for years, and I was shy it wouldn’t live up to its praise. It more than lived up to the kudos it has justly received. It is about a guy, who makes the mistake of taking in a cat on his doorstep and comes to,uh, regret it. He keeps tossing out the cat. The cat returns and as only a cat can demolishes the guys house and life. Never has there been such sunny sunless humor. This is as humorous as the best Loony Tunes and better than the average. Pure gold with an ending that makes it a gem. Masterpiece every moment of the design.

(6) “Juke Bar” combines live action with animation as cockroaches live it up in a newly delivered old-style juke box to a greasy spoon hot dog joint. The fancifully conceived and lively roaches turn the juke box into a bar. And then the partying begins. A shimmering delight. But all parties must kill and this one has a favorable double surprise ending. Actually, not surprising if you’ve ever battled the small SOBs. Vast character animation. A classic.

(7) “Blackfly” is an animation based on a song written by the Canadian who wrote and sings about his experiences as a lumberjack. Another classic. After 6 and 7, you may feel like scratching.

(8) “The Lump” is a cautionary sage on wanting everything to eye perfect and how insisting on perfection that is cosmetic expose can lead to inconvenience, i.e. seeing only the beauty and not the reality, which is spun to perceive stunning. Another masterpiece to fabricate one leer a very dependable blind-spot in all of us. More relevant than ever in today’s unbelievably inappropriate modern regime of politicians

If you are a ancient (in all ways) adult, this is a gracious one for taking a see at “alternative” animation and its riches–artstic and thunder.

I don’t know why this DVD is getting hard to catch all of a sudden. My copy arrived today, but it looks like you can no longer order it.

First off, this DVD isn’t really for American kids. With that in mind, please read the following review. Anyway, this is a more engrossing selection of National Film Board of Canada attractive shorts than the Leonard Maltin Animation Favorites DVD. The Maltin selections were ample too but too arty for the average viewer (I nearly fell asleep throughout “Pas de Deux” on that video) .

In “Animation Greats!” we notice a variety of crowd pleasers, beginning with the surprising “Special Delivery” and ending with “Blackfly”, an exciting adaptation of a Canadian folk song. Honest, there is unruffled “The Lump” after that one, but “The Lump” is objective so Unimaginative and tedious. An overlong pixilation/collage short with unappealing characters.

The thing about this DVD is that unlike a lot of short film collections, the ratio of proper Superb shorts is higher. The best ones are “Special Delivery”, Richard Condie’s “Getting started” (which is also on the Maltin DVD but the sound is better on this print), “The vast snit” (also by Condie, an incredible expose of Condie’s original humour), the rarely-seen, albeit qualified musical comedy “Accumulate a Job” starring Bob Dog…and of course, “The Cat Came Befriend” which seems to be in nearly every single compilation of NFB shorts (It’s on the Maltin DVD as well as on any number of past, exhibit and future compilations) .

The only shorts I had no savor for were “The Lump” and “Juke Bar”, a pre-”Joe’s Apartment” cockroach-infested stop-motion escapade. It honest wasn’t droll enough. Overall I recommend getting this if you understanding on watching the cartoons with friends, and the Leonard Maltin DVD if you want some pleasing visuals.

This would’ve got 5 stars from me if they replaced “The Lump” with McLaren’s “Neighbours” and “Juke Bar” with “What on Earth”.

Cliff (played by the slack Andre First-rate) has objective turned 18. Brilliant, younger, Ritalin-popping sister Cookie (Haylee Wanstall) gives him a good push to go out into the immense city (Toronto) to accept sex. Emerging from the subway and riding his novel skateboard, Cliff scoots off to a hustling district and catches the spy of one of the pros, Butch (Brendan Fehr), a drug-taker. Virgin Cliff decides almost immediately that he wants a relationship with Butch and even brings him home after the first night’s encounter. The relationship has its ups and downs, but the audience gets to gawk Butch (and, to a lesser extent, Cliff) operate in the hustler world at a benignly kinky, more-than-vanilla, level but at less than the heights of depravity shown in “Mandragora.” The two have a satisfactory chemistry, especially in the (shortened from the VHS version) breakfast and photo-discussing scenes. Cliff wants romance, not hustling; Butch has some ambivalence toward Cliff. The place moves toward an inevitable result, followed by a twist at the ruin that shows where Cliff really is.

Cliff and Butch exhibit ample skin and are both genuine lookers. There are four hustler characters who exhibit more. It all seems realistic and fairly presented.

I found the hustling side-stories the most bewitching allotment of the movie. Butch, Cliff, and Cookie are the most memorably acted characters. The main treasure epic seemed rushed at the beginning. Although I would have liked a exiguous more on Cliff’s motivation, one can execute enough sense of it all. The initial scenes feel too formulaic; the viewer unbiased has to last past them.

“Sugar” is an keen, offbeat film despite some soft spots. There are no extras at all. Indecent 4 rating.

The novel tragic death of actor Andre Estimable leaves a void that cannot be replaced. But thankfully he has left his stamp in this beautifully directed film. Sugar reminds me of “My private Idaho” in terms of directing and mood. While the extinct film had River Phoenix, who made the film so sexy, this film has Andre Honorable. Salubrious had an acting style that revealed passion and emotion with a sexual edge. Playing an 18 year veteran elated teen who is anxious to have his first sexual encounter, he falls for Butch, a jubilant street hustler(played well by Brendan Fehr) . But this is clearly Noble’s film. His heart breaking performance is so right and attractive, and he seemed so destined for shipshape stardom. Delicate eyes, splendid hair and a smile that would smash a million hearts, his death leaves the film industry without his raw talent and that is a shame. I would rate this film as an indie classic. It really hit home for me. I hope straight viewers maintain an initiate mind while viewing as Andre truly gives a performance worth seeing again and again.

White Lightning is one of my favorite Burt films. Unfortunately, this DVD is a watered down version of the excessive original. Not that you need it, but most of the foul-language has been poorly dubbed over to words like, “shoot” and “dang”. One of the main character’s deaths at the end of the film is cut - you don’t see the villain shot, you only see him after the fact. I wonder if this was the only available print that MGM could find in their vaults? In addition, MGM adds insult to injury by releasing a full-frame (pan-and-scan) version! Ouch! Quality of the picture is good, but that’s no reason to plunk down your hard-earned cash on an incomplete version of this film. I’m sad.

While watching White Lighting (1973) yesterday, I couldn’t help think a more appropriate title might have been Hillbillies, Moonshine and Pit Stains, as there were copious amounts of each throughout the film…written by William W. Norton (Big Bad Mama, Day of the Animals), who also wrote the subsequent sequel titled Gator (1976), White Lighting was directed by Joseph `No Time For’ Sargent (Colossus: The Forbin Project, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three) and stars Burt Reynolds (Deliverance, The Longest Yard). Also appearing is Bo Hopkins (The Getaway, Midnight Express), Ned Beatty (Silver Streak, Superman), Jennifer Billingsley (The Thirsty Dead), Matt Clark (Jeremiah Johnson, Brubaker), R.G. Armstrong (Race with the Devil, Dixie Dynamite), and Diane Ladd (The Wild Angels, Chinatown), whose real life daughter, Laura Dern, makes her first, silver screen appearance in an uncredited role as Diane Ladd’s characters daughter.

The film opens with the killing of two young men (hippies college students, I suspect, given their youthful appearance and longish hair) in a remote area of the bayou at the hands of two police officers. Well, turns out one of the boys just happened to be the younger brother of Gator McKlusky (Reynolds), who’s currently pulling a stint in the local penitentiary on a charge of running (delivering) illegally distilled whiskey, aka moonshine aka white lighting. Gator takes the news hard, tries to escape, but eventually finds himself in the position of making a deal with the feds, as both the gooberment and Gator have their eyes on the same target, that of Sheriff J.C. Connors (Beatty), the most powerful man in Bogan County, and also the one responsible for killing Gator’s brother (the feds want Connors because he controls the lucrative flow of `shine in Bogan County). The plan is for Gator to infiltrate the `shine operation in Bogan County and collect as much information as he can, but Gator just wants a shot at Sheriff Connors (vengeance is a dish best served sweaty, in Bogan County, at least). The feds provide Gator with a souped up car and a slightly unwilling contact in that of Dude Watson (Clark), who hooks Gator up with local runner Roy Boone (Hopkins), which leads to local `shine maker Big Bear (Armstrong), and eventually Connors himself. But therein lies the dilemma…you see, Gator is a good ole boy, so the thought of ratting on his own kin, making a living doing what they’ve always done (distilling and selling whiskey), makes him sick to his stomach, but his desire get back at Connors for his brothers death is something that can’t be denied…

If you’re looking for some good old fashion, sweat stained, engine revving, tire smokin’, exhaust huffing, balls out visceral entertainment, look no further. This was Reynolds initial foray into the `good ole boy’ soon-to-be-his-trademark character, one that reached its pinnacle in the film Smokey and the Bandit (1977), as previous roles mainly included him playing Native American characters like Joe in Navajo Joe (1966), Red Hand in Blade Rider, Revenge of the Indian Nations (1966), and Yaqui Joe Herrera in 100 Rifles (1969). Many consider this to be his finest on screen performance (I was always partial to his role as Paul Crewe in the 1974 film The Longest Yard), one that certainly agreed with him as he revived the character a few years later in the film Gator (1976)…this was also the start of his `quipping’ in films…you know, that thing where he makes a smarmy joke, and then he’s usually the only one who laughs? I think my favorite scene in this film is the one with Gator and Dude in Gator’s car, and the pull up to Sheriff Connors in town for a first meeting (for Gator, at least). Gator knows the sheriff had something to do with his brother’s death, so he comes off in sort of an antagonizing way reviving the engine of his hot rod while Dude nervously makes small talk with the sheriff. Beatty’s character gives the unknown man a good, long look as if to say, “I’m the law, and I don’t know you, but I’ve got my eye on you.”…either that, or he was hot for him…another great scene features R.G. Armstrong getting whacked upside the head with a boat oar…I felt that one myself…probably the most painful sequences involved Reynolds emoting in character about the loss of his brother, and trying to comprehend the reasoning why…I questioned this particular plot aspect of the film, but then realized it was necessary because Reynolds would have needed that extra motivation to force his character to work with the feds, going against his own peoples…that way he doesn’t look like a complete sh*t…in this effort, they also had to make the villain, Beatty’s character, incredibly vile as to draw away from Gator’s betrayal of his people (I guess it wasn’t bad enough he was a killer). This is illustrated in numerous scenes, like when the sheriff is interrogating (torturing) Dude’s father by shoving the old man’s hand in a doorframe in order to get some information, letting his deputies manhandle Dude’s wife, played by Diane Ladd, the way they did, or his derogatory comments about minorities and hippies. One thing this movie has a lot of is exciting and well exercised car chase sequences. When done right, the viewer can almost feel the pull of the gravitational force taking a turn at 40 mph and smell the rubber burning as the accelerator is punched to the floor. And the stunts, for the most part, weren’t over the top crazy, but strong, solid, and believable (the one where Gator partially lands his car on a garbage scow might have been the one exception). One thing that seemed really strange about this movie was the obvious removal some of the dialog through post-production dubbing (they took out the swears). I think this was done prior to the original release as to get a PG rating…I’m unsure if any scenes have been shortened in terms of removing violence or nekkidness in a further effort to satisfy the rating requirement, but I’d probably say yes…

One thing that annoyed me most of all about this release, and the reason I’m going three stars instead of four, is that there is only the full screen, pan & scan (1.33:1) version available on this DVD. Why they couldn’t include both is beyond me, but I guess the studio was just trying to save a few bucks and figured we wouldn’t care…I noticed the same treatment for the film Gator, which I won’t be buying unless they decide to re-release it with both formats. The picture quality on this DVD does look decent, but, as someone else mentioned, it does appear a little too dark, especially during the shadowy or nighttime scenes. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono comes through well enough, and in terms of special features, there’s only a trailer for the film.

This is almost like a documentary in telling the story of the CIA taking a Russian defector to safety back in the 60s. It gives a good background on what the spy game was like then and an in depth look at the workings of the CIA at the time. This is not nail-biting action, but a good overall look at the spy business in a more intellectual study. I recommend it to those that enjoy spy novels the most and I think that even those that enjoy the James Bond action movies may find it interesting. Great performances by Yul Brynner and Henry Fonda.

Better than average Cold War “Spy vs. Spy” thriller….good cast and story line…….Caution…much of the background conversations are in foreign languages…French, Russian, etc….there are subtitles but don’t expect all the dialog to be in English….otherwise it’s a good flick..!!

This is the series abotu Junta sho is a boy who in the future has becoem a Mega Playboy and is the cause for the worlds over population. Karin comes back in tim eto stop Junta from becoming withe mega playboy but shoots him with the wrong bullet that infact causes him to become that which she is trying to stop!!

The series is all about comedy, you have girls that love him as the megaplayboy one that loves him as him and Karin who is tryign to stop liking him but ends up faling for him as well in true anime love triangle fashion. Tie in to this a class battle at the end and you have a very enjoyable Anime. I’ve seen this in Japanese and am looking forward to the American dubbing

It’s a great film sure enough, but a terrible DVD. The print looks as though it was retrieved from a trash can and there are 12 important mintues missing. There is some important dialogue missing from the first scene with Christopher Lee. Next, the stripper scene is missing altogether. Then the ending is all but obliterated. Not good at all and detracts from the overall story.

Lurid, low budget British exploitation JD flick about Jennifer (pouty Gillian Hills) a teen-age “beat girl” who is waiting to go completely wild. She’s already sneaking out at night to join her beat friends much to the chagrin of her “square” archtitect father. But when Daddy brings home a much younger French wife named Nicole (Noelle Adam), Jennifer bristles like a porcupine. There’s a strip club called Les Girls across the street from the Beat Club where Jenny’s gang hangs out and it isn’t long before she finds out that stepmom Nicole used to do something sleazy back in Paris. She gleans this information from a burned out stripper at Les Girls who used to “work” with Nicole. And it isn’t long before Jenny wanders in to Les Girls and draws the attention of the sleazy owner (Christopher Lee, who’s properly oily). Nicole frantically tries to prevent Jenny’s father from finding out about her past and also to keep Jenny out of Lee’s clutches. But, as plot lines go, things get out of hand. “Beat Girl” offers much in the way of cheesy entertainment. There’s blaring music, a “chicken” drag race, cheap girls, lousy “rock-a-billy” songs, a wretched, obviously lip-synched number called “It’s Legal” performed by pretty Shirley Anne Field (”Horrors of the Black Museum” and “Peeping Tom”) who’s one of the gang, some teasy strippers and an awful performance by French actress Noelle Adam who is obviously struggling with her English. Some familiar faces like Adam Faith and a young Oliver Reed as a beat guy called “Green Shirt” are here as well. Faith plays Jenny’s wanna be boyfriend and he’s responsible for the rock-a-billy numbers done ala Elvis. Frankly, you couldn’t ask for a cheesier movie even though the film jumps in spots as though it were cut or censored. The print is pretty scratched up, too, but it’s watchable. But I really liked Bardot look-a-like Hills as Jenny. She was perfectly snooty, catty and irritating to the point you couldn’t wait to see her come to a bad end. If you’re patient with the flaws, “Beat Girl” is a lot of trashy fun in the JD genre. As Jenny says, “Dig this and dig it real…”. Enjoy.

All 34 of the Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry Shorts are included along with two new documentaries. This really doesn’t represent the peak of Tom and Jerry cartoons. This is not the era in which the cartoons were winning Academy Awards. Those cartoons are included in Tom and Jerry: Spotlight Collection, Vol. 1-3. Do be aware that there was considerable controversy over these Spotlight Collections in which cartoons were edited in the first two volumes and two cartoons were not even released in the third. Another Long DVD Review by Joe Torcivia

It must have been one heck of a surprise for the theatrical audiences of late 1963 to see the familiar MGM Roaring Lion signal the beginning of the upcoming cartoon - and have the head of TOM fade into its place and go “MEOW! MEOW! FST! FST!”. …I know it was for me when I first saw it on television!

But, with this revamped opening, famed animation director Chuck Jones began putting his stamp on Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera’s cat and mouse team of TOM AND JERRY.

Chuck’s unique vision and design sense would guide Bill and Joe’s creations for little more than three years and 34 cartoons, and it is those cartoons that make up Warner Home Video’s release Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection.

We’ll break the review into CONS and PROS.

The CONS:

Content Notes: Once again a WHV set has NO CONTENT LISTING anywhere inside the package! One disc is on a “hinged holder” and the other disc rests on the inside back wall of the packaging! But, beyond that, there is no list of titles for the cartoons and, while they follow the order of original theatrical release, this isn’t something that even most hardcore animation fans have committed to memory, much less mere civilians. Ditto on listings for the extra features.

This is at least the THIRD Warner Animation set I’ve purchased this year with no content notes! The others being Max Fleischer’s Superman and Saturday Morning Cartoons 1960s Volume 1. Doubtless, there are others indicating an unfortunate trend in Warner’s DVD packaging for animation sets.

Talent: It’s not Bill Hanna, Joe Barbera, and original composer Scott Bradley. Let everything that follows in this review lie within the context that these three talented individuals are who put Tom and Jerry on the pop culture map to stay!

The Set Itself: A minor “con”, but the fact that it IS “The Chuck Jones Collection”, coming on the heels of three volumes of the original Hanna-Barbera shorts, means that there will probably be no DVD release of the 13 Gene Deitch T&J shorts of 1960-1962.

I was actually hoping for a “Tom and Jerry in the Sixties” set that would encompass the runs of both Deitch AND Jones… but, clearly, Jones is the more marketable name and he gets the call - and we may never be treated to the “otherworldly wonders” of Mr. Deitch.

The PROS:

Talent: It’s Chuck Jones - and, by this time in the 1960s, there were few, if any, talents to truly rival Jones - and he’s brought a few old friends with him…

Writer Michael Maltese, co-director and designer Maurice Noble, voice actors Mel Blanc and June Foray (…with Blanc doing the “yelling in pain” as Tom. I guess they couldn’t use Bill Hanna’s classic “AAAAAAHHH!” anymore!), and composer Eugene Poddany.

Put them all together and they made 34 entertaining cartoons that looked better than the any of the competing product of the day.

Style: During this period, Tom and Jerry were “Jones-ified”. There’s probably no better way to put it. Jerry became “cuter” than ever before, and Tom took on the “villainous” physical characteristics of Jones’ Daffy Duck and especially Wyle E. Coyote. The animation was lush for the time, and Jones’ trademark character posing abounds.

The Extra Features: “Tom and Jerry and Chuck” is a 20 minute feature on the coming together of this unlikely trio, and is narrated by June Foray. Many parallels are drawn to Jones’ prior Warner Bros. work - in both characters and plots of specific cartoons. It is also shown where Jones put his own spin on T&J plots previously produced by Hanna and Barbera. The feature is punctuated by frequent clips of Chuck Jones, in his later years, speaking on the subject.

In its 25 minutes, “Chuck Jones: Memories of a Childhood” covers what is found in the first three chapters of Mr. Jones’ 1989 book, “Chuck Amuck”, in his own words and pictures. This 2008 documentary featurette was produced for Turner Classic Movies and, while very informative, does not mention Tom and Jerry at any time. Give it points if you’re a Jones fan. Take away points if you’re a Tom and Jerry fan. You decide!

Print Quality: To my eyes, and on my equipment, the prints are nearly flawless for average age 45-year-old cartoons. Far better than the print quality on the aforementioned Max Fleischer’s Superman and Saturday Morning Cartoons 1960s Volume 1.

Menus: For reasons unknown, Warner’s DVD animation set main menus often have unusually LOUD background music or “series themes” that play while the menu is displayed. So loud that I’ll either MUTE while lingering on the menu - or navigate off the menu as quickly as possible. Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection is an exception to this, as an “appropriately sixties” piece of cartoon theme-style music (the opening credits theme for “Jerry, Jerry, Quite Contrary” by Dean Elliot) plays at an equally appropriate sound level. THIS SHOULDN’T EVEN NEED TO BE LISTED AS A “PRO”, but the loudness issue is so prevalent on Warner animation set main menus that such a welcome change should be noted.

A SPECIAL ODD-HONORABLE MENTION: “O-Solar-Meow”, “Guided Mouse-ille” and “Advance And Be Mechanized”. Chuck Jones was the master of the “Duck Season / Rabbit Season Trilogy”. These cartoons make up his “Robot Cat / Robot Mouse Trilogy”! Not great, but not terrible either.

GRADE “F”:

“Matinee Mouse” and “Shutter Bugged Cat” For their jarring use of old Hanna-Barbera stock footage - and for using it without Scott Bradley’s music! A double demerit!

The cartoons more than average out to a “PRO”! And so does the DVD set as a whole.

In the final analysis TOM AND JERRY, under the stewardship of Charles M. (”Chuck”) Jones, was great and unusually innovative at its beginning - but, unfortunately, began to peter-out as Jones stepped further and further away from it.

The best entries were where Jones, Michael Maltese, Maurice Noble and Eugene Poddany came together as a fine creative force, experimenting all the way - and the lesser entries occurred when they did not. Though writer Bob Ogle contributed some worthy exceptions to this rule throughout the run.

As a DVD collection, the cartoons in this set are well worth multiple viewings and will provide many hours of enjoyment. (I watched “Surf-Bored Cat” four times in one day!)

Even the lesser efforts were among the best (…if not ACTUALLY the best) theatrical animated shorts of their time. Keeping it in THAT perspective, I recommend this set to anyone with an interest in Chuck Jones, Tom and Jerry, and the animated shorts of the sixties. If you enjoy some good old (stylized) fun in your cartoons, this is for you!

Gus Van Sant has always been an excellent if somewhat eclectic director. Although I have enjoyed his previous efforts, I was somewhat apprehensive when I heard he was undertaking a film biography of Harvey Milk. A gay figure of this importance, I thought, should be handled by someone a little more mainstream. Like many gay people, I am weary of gay-themed films that reach no one beyond a gay audience, and the message I would want to emerge from a film about Harvey Milk should be heard by everyone.

As if reading my mind, Mr. Van Sant has fashioned a film that is accessible to all, while approaching his subject with sharp focus and a singleness of purpose that is at once definitive and topical. A stunning achievement, MILK manages to make its point without ever being preachy or trite, while remaining as true to the facts as any film bio could ever hope to be.

The film opens with snippets of gay history that many young gay people, let alone a straight audience, may be shocked to discover. During the opening credits, a barrage of vintage film clips remind us that a scant 50 years ago, gay men, lesbians and transsexuals were subjected to violence, harassment, physical abuse, arrest and humiliation by the very people that most citizens look to for protection; i.e. the police and judicial authorities. The newsreel images of gay bar raids that open MILK project a surreal yet somehow eerily familiar atmosphere that seems to alternate between the bizarre and the barbaric. Many people today are not aware that, in the 1940’s and 1950’s, right here in the USA, gay people were arrested for simply patronizing a gay bar (newspaper headline: “Den of Perverts Busted”). Many of those arrested had their names and employers published in the morning paper (!), and often found themselves unemployed and unemployable, branded with the label of “deviate”. It is this chilling fact of social injustice that clears the way for the film’s swing into a very important piece of gay history.

Skillfully telling us the story of Milk’s rise as a leader in the Castro Gay Community of San Francisco, Harvey Milk is seen throughout the film as a living, breathing flesh and blood person. Van Sant adroitly propels Sean Penn through a warts-and-all portrayal of a frail human being with an idealistic bent and a politician’s savvy. As with any good film, it is difficult, if not impossible, to discern which is more impressive - the balance of a perfect cast and lovingly detailed direction weave their way through a seamless portrait of an important historical figure, yet we are somberly reminded that many people remember Harvey Milk solely for the “Twinkie” defense of his star-crossed killer. The end result is that gay audiences emerge from seeing this film with a sense of pride and purpose, while straight audiences leave with a better knowledge of who we (gay people) are, what we want, and what we are struggling for. By word of mouth I expected a thrilling cinematic experience; what I got was a surprisingly near-perfect motion picture and some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. I heartily recommend MILK to any straight person who wants to get a grasp on what the last 30 years of gay history were really all about, and any gay person who wants to feel good about themselves. MILK is a triumph. See it.

Allow me to agree with at least one other reviewer that everyone should see this, especially those who think being gay is so far out of the mainstream that, as my father in law once said, “The Lord allowed AIDS to happen.”

Harvey Milk. A man of whom I know little. I lived on the other side of the world when he died, in a city in which it was not unusual to run into eunuchs. I’d heard of him since, in reference to gayness, but never associated any importance to him. Then I saw that Sean Penn was playing Milk, so I told my spouse that we need to see it.

Milk, it seemed, lived a pretty conventional lifestyle, working for an insurance company in New York. According to the script, anyway, in 1970 he met a flame and they headed to the west coast. Despite local resistance, they set up shop in the Castro district of San Francisco (after “The Haight” had become riddled with crime, homelessness and the like). Milk then decided it was time to get politically active.

In this portion of the film, I thought for a while that I was going to suffer from motion sickness. The camera seemed to move quite rapidly, and cut from the scene they were shooting to a historical scene, and back. But I adjusted. And Milk lost the first election, then the second, then the third. That, believe it or not, didn’t take too much time for the film to get across, except that Milk’s lover, Scott (played by James Franco) left after he said he couldn’t take another one. That’s when the action started (!)

I’m not gay, and have never been terribly sympathetic to many of the gay causes. At least I never payed much attention to ‘em. Yeah, I heard outrageous statements like I quoted above, but I just disregarded them. After this film, my spouse felt guilty that she didn’t know much about the Milk case. I pointed out that she wasn’t exposed to it much. Even to this day many of the gay “causes” aren’t seen as so mainstream. They’re seen as somewhat fringe. Some alleged “gay eccentricities” may have added to that exclusion, and I believe the film included that element. Indeed, that’s why Harvey Milk decided to go to Orange County, CA, without his gay supporters, and debate State Senator Briggs, played by Dennis O’Hare, the proponent of Proposition 6, a gay rights provision to which gays were opposed, on his own terms. And it paid off! The proposition was defeated!

Throughout the film, Milk was reciting a testament into his tape recorder, to be played only if he were assasinated. I wish I knew whether Milk really did that or whether it was added to the film for “effect.” Either way, it was the adhesive that kept the film together.

The historical clips also added to the film’s credibility, especially those of Anita Bryant. After Bryant’s success in some anti-gay initiatives around the country, Milk decided to bring her causes to the attention of the people of California, and that’s where the Proposition 6 movement began.

There’s so much I could say about the film. I don’t want to cover anything of the murder case, as I’ll give too much away. The acting was definitely Oscar material, especially for Sean Penn. The script and music were award-winning. But the reason I endorse it–especially for those most opposed to gay rights–is that it shows that those rights are no less constitutional or mainstream than the rights of blacks, women, or any other groups which have had to labor hard for the last 230 years!

Whether the film was timed to come out–no pun intended–after California’s Proposition 8, I don’t know. But it’s well timed in terms of trying to educate people as to why those right should be guaranteed.

Today we have people like Keith Olbermann to editorialize on those who opposed Proposition 8. We can thank God for Harvey Milk, the “first openly gay” person in politics in the US, for having opened to doors for those contemporay editorials.

It’s also, by the way, a testament to the cause of political activism in general; most activists find themselves in a rut deeper than that of Milk and his associates. This film may remind them to persist!

See this gem, and make sure those challenged by gay rights see it. Discuss it with them. Someday then we will be able to proclaim that “all men are created equal.”

….The year of The Transformers!!! It’s about time! I’m 25 years old and i’m sure that others from my generation used to spend their afternoons with their friends transforming their autobots and decepticons and talking smack on which ones we bought. I can’t wait for this DVD collection to come out. Hopefully it doesn’t stop with the first season and also give us a chance to see again He-man, Voltron, M.A.S.K, Gem (jk!!!). Anyway keep up the good work RHINO!!!!!

I thought about ordering this DVD set for some time but had held off. I thought it was rather pricey. Along came by birthday, though, and I decided to buy myself a little something….

I forgot how good this show really was. It was incredibly loyal to the each of the characters and everything at this point. The voice actors are an all star cast as well.

The remastering job was very good when you consider what they had to work with to start. They cleaned up a lot of noise and dirt off of the film and made the colors a lot more vivid and clear. There are some occasional sound effects added, but they are not intrustive and not that frequent, really. A couple of scenes in “Heavy Metal War”, the last episode on the disc, turned out pretty poor, but otherwise they did an awesome job restoring this first season run, even including the original opening of the show and the commercial bumpers.

I am still annoyed by the constant coloring mistakes made by the original animators of the show. I guess it’s part of the charm, and it’s probably best that Rhino left them like they were. I remember these coloring mistakes in the original series just as well, and it even bothered me back then in 1984-85 that Sunbow couldn’t seem to tell the difference between Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp most of the time (though as the series goes on past the first 5 or 6, they DO get better about it…save for the part in Heavy Metal War where there are two Starscreams side by side, one of which was supposed to be Skywarp).

I wish Rhino would take out the stupid cartoon openings on their videos and DVDs, though. While I know they are mostly a children’s video company, with things like Transformers and GI Joe, they are mostly catering to adults…adults who don’t want to sit through a cartoon rhino dressed like Elvis at the start of each disc while we wait for the menu to appear.

Overall, if you grew up with this original series of Transformers, as I did, you will very much enjoy this set. I enjoyed every minute of it, and can hardly wait until late November now, where Rhino releases the first half of Season 2 in a box set. The second half of Season 2 follows in the Spring.

So if you are waiting like I did, stop waiting now. After watching this, I felt like a kid again, and you will too.
